View Full Version : Reputations Jon 01-24-2006, 01:33 AM Notice the new reputation setting. It indicates who's posts are considered worthy! Try and build yours up. :D reclusivemonkey 01-24-2006, 01:58 AM Noticed that this morning Jon, I was just going to ask about it. How does it work? Jon 01-24-2006, 02:16 AM If you particularly like a post, you click the weighing scales to add some credibility. wazz 01-24-2006, 04:10 AM very nice feature. how many points/block? max num blocks? Jon 01-24-2006, 04:25 AM Don't know yet. Waiting for answers on several things. It is supposed to be 5 I think but I 'awarded' :) myself the highest rating and it doesn't look right. KenHigg 01-24-2006, 05:01 AM How did you get a brilliant future? KenHigg 01-24-2006, 05:06 AM This was funny: "You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Jon again." :):):) KenHigg 01-24-2006, 05:15 AM Can you view the feed-back comments that people leave for your posts? alastair69 01-24-2006, 05:20 AM How can you tell how your Reputation is doing Mile-O 01-24-2006, 05:54 AM Move your mouse over it. Kraj 01-24-2006, 06:09 AM Can reputation be negatively influenced? reclusivemonkey 01-24-2006, 06:15 AM Can reputation be negatively influenced? ...and if so can it be turned off in the Watercooler? ;-) KenHigg 01-24-2006, 06:21 AM ...and if so can it be turned off in the Watercooler? ;-) I think that is an excellent question. I not, it may be meaningless from a db skills contributions/help point of view... Rich 01-24-2006, 06:44 AM ...and if so can it be turned off in the Watercooler? ;-) Well I disaproved of that suggestion and it hasn't made a blind bit of difference to your reputation   :D KenHigg 01-24-2006, 06:55 AM I think we should collaborate and drive Jon's reputation back down to a more modest and believable reputation... I mean 'Brilliant'? reclusivemonkey 01-24-2006, 07:45 AM Well I disaproved of that suggestion and it hasn't made a blind bit of difference to your reputation I was thinking of you and your regular flame fests with the Americans. Quite frankly, I don't care much about my "reputation", people can take my advice or leave it (sorry, don't mean to undermine Jon's efforts, I can see how most people would appreciate this, I'm just a contrary git). A quick glance through someone's posts should give a better indication of their "reputation". Although doing that sometimes gets you the reputation of being a stalker! Rich 01-24-2006, 07:50 AM I was thinking of you and your regular flame fests with the Americans. Only with those who's politics are suspect :D wazz 01-24-2006, 08:36 AM ...I don't care much about my "reputation"...it is a neat little feature but maybe a bit...ah, egotistical? especially calling it "reputation". interesting. "how is my reputation today?" gives me the creeps a bit. another name might be better. and yet, it has an eerie magnetic draw...like reality tv...reality db forums. (downgrading could be hilarious). A quick glance through someone's posts should give a better indication of their "reputation".true, it could, in a way. Although doing that sometimes gets you the reputation of being a stalker!:) will we be able to sort users by their rep like we can now with num of posts? reclusivemonkey 01-24-2006, 08:41 AM will we be able to sort users by their rep like we can now with num of posts?:) The number of posts is no indication of their usefulness, which is what the thread ratings and poster reputations are trying to represent. For example, someone may only post once a month, but that one post may answer something no one else can. Kraj 01-24-2006, 08:43 AM Only with those who's politics are suspect :D And that doesn't include all Americans? I think Rich is turning over a new leaf! :p wazz 01-24-2006, 08:44 AM The number of posts is no indication of their usefulness true, true. that's why it's a bit eerie. Rich 01-24-2006, 10:48 AM And that doesn't include all Americans? I can't possibly understand how anybody could ever think it did?  Len Boorman 01-25-2006, 02:58 AM Hmmm Just checked my reputation and if I got it right it says I am off the scale   Which end I ask myself.  Now I know there are others better than me but did not think I was in the negative :( :( L Rich 01-25-2006, 03:00 AM Hmmm Just checked my reputation and if I got it right it says I am off the scale   Which end I ask myself.  Now I know there are others better than me but did not think I was in the negative :( :( L It might be better than an unknown quantity  :D Hayley Baxter 01-25-2006, 03:03 AM It might be better than an unknown quantity  :D :p :D sorry but that made me smile  Hay Len Boorman 01-25-2006, 03:04 AM It might be better than an unknown quantity  :D An exclusive club of which I see you are a member. Brian selenau837 01-25-2006, 08:50 AM I'm now seeing 'Add to <name>'s reputation' as well as Report bad post. What are those and how does it work? Secondly, how come someone with only one post is on the shows the samething as someone with 10K post. On the distinguished road. However, mine has no qualifers. Can you explain this system to us further. MrsGorilla 01-25-2006, 11:13 AM Only with those who's politics are suspect :D I know you don't mean me... :D  MrsGorilla 01-25-2006, 11:16 AM Mine says 'unknown quanity at this point'. See, I am the mysterious one. Not any more. I voted for you to see what would happen with your reputation because I was wondering if it was just because no one had voted for you yet (hee hee hee). Now it says "on a distinguished road". I too, am curious how our "beginning" values were assigned and what the scale is. It doesn't mean much to know I'm on a distinguished road if I don't know what the distinguished road is. :D selenau837 01-25-2006, 11:19 AM Not any more. It doesn't mean much to know I'm on a distinguished road if I don't know what the distinguished road is. :D Thank you so much!! Hugs! However I was VERY curious how someone with only 1 post had the same as Rich and his 10k post. That I found odd. Now we have something to hold over each other. Taking away reputation points for pissing each other off. Ohh, lordy mercy. I hope I didn't just give ideas. No Rich, Col, J, and Ken. Behave and no taking away points. :D Kraj 01-25-2006, 11:22 AM It doesn't mean much to know I'm on a distinguished road if I don't know what the distinguished road is. :D I agree, but from what Jon's test rating looked like, I think the green dots grow in number as your votes grow, so the popup description is more flavor than function. You'll know how useful someone is by the number of dots. At least that's what I think. And I'm curious as to how I got 16 points the weekend it was implemented. Maybe Jon likes my style. :p :D Oh, and as far as I'm aware the "Report Bad Post" button has always been there to flag spammers, flamers, ToS violators and such. selenau837 01-25-2006, 11:25 AM And I'm curious as to how I got 16 points the weekend it was implemented. Maybe Jon likes my style. :p :D How do you know how many you have?? KenHigg 01-25-2006, 11:26 AM Cool. If you do a rep and leave a comment, the user can then see it, but not who sent it in your UserCP. (Unless you tell them who you are in the comment itself...) MrsGorilla 01-25-2006, 11:27 AM I agree, but from what Jon's test rating looked like, I think the green dots grow in number as your votes grow, so the popup description is more flavor than function. You'll know how useful someone is by the number of dots. At least that's what I think. That's what I was wondering, but I've seen some that say "on a distinguished road" and others that say "off the scale" and then Selena's said "unknown quantity" and they all had just one dot. So I'm still a little curious and will be glad when he gets a chance to post some further explanations. And I'm curious as to how I got 16 points the weekend it was implemented. Maybe Jon likes my style. :p :D Hey, that's how many I have too. He must like us both. :D MrsGorilla 01-25-2006, 11:27 AM How do you know how many you have?? Can also see comments if there were any left. I have 10 points. :D Rich 01-25-2006, 11:40 AM Some idiot here likes Jon (I'll punch yer lights out, two Jags Jonny)Prescott    wazz 01-25-2006, 04:50 PM I was VERY curious how someone with only 1 post had the same as [someone with] 10k post[s].it seems this is about us creating reputations. as was said before, 10K posts says nothing about the quality of the posts, so i guess we have to start from scratch. ps. when you click to add rep, you can choose to approve or disapprove with the post (or sim). can we subtract points? doubt it. maybe it just allows us to make a comment without actually adding points?? pss. what is a ToS violator? ppss. also, when you're finished on the rep page, you're not sent back to the page you were on. :( Kraj 01-25-2006, 05:29 PM pss. what is a ToS violator? Terms of Service. People who violate the rules they implicitly agreed to abide by when posting here. The Stoat 01-26-2006, 12:43 AM Hi, I use a few sites with this facility and i don't particularly like it. I've seen a number of flame wars start simply because two people posted the same solution to a problem at the same time and only one was accredited with points. I've seen people copy replies verbatim from early posts to get points rather than refer them to the original thread and I've also seen a few of the more prominent users get points from sycophantic individuals for simply posting a reply even when it was dross. TBH this site doesn't really seem to suffer from the worst of these internet personality types but i wonder whether the personality type developed before or after the points system arrived? If you don't mind i'll show my appreciation with a reply to that affect NOI. TS BarryMK 01-26-2006, 01:25 AM I too am "off the scale" with 10 points.
