Here is a nice idea lets try and compile a list of the best free games which you can find. Oh and just as a side thought anyone know where i can get cannon fodder from as i loved that game and cannot find it anywhere.

There's a pretty good free online rpg called conquer online. It's isometric run around hack stuff.

Lots of fun in a group if you manage to find people to work with.

Other than that try ogame.org - it's a a space based empire building dealie, and is pretty good, not least of which because I can slip to it and make a few choices during work hours!!

If you want old games that are now free do a search for abandonware - I'm pretty sure cannon fodder is abandonware now, which means you can legally download it and play away - the owners have released the game of any purchasing pre-requisites.

Though I downloaded it from download.com.
the initial download is 300 megs or so, but it's completely free after that.

A lot of what is supposedly "abandonware" has not formally been abandoned by their publishers. So they could take action against you (probably not likely to, but just so you know it's not technically legal)

I stumbled across this (http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/downloads_games.htm) while I was looking for something else today. Apparently for the 10th anniversary of the Elder Scrolls series, they are making the first game available for download. Just an FYI for any of you out there that might be into RPG games.

The multi-player component of F.E.A.R. has just been released for free, as F.E.A.R. Combat.
Get it from www.sierra.com or www.getfear.com (I think?)
