View Full Version : 4 Wheels vs. 2

I just have to vent a moment, thought I'd share with the rest of the bikers that frequent the 'cooler.

I brought the bike to work this morning, as I'm prone to do with gas prices being what they are, was enjoying the back mountain roads and had just reached the first of the more crowded throroughfares. I waited and waited and waited for traffic and finally saw a hole that was just big enough to get the bike in and get up to speed, but I'd really have to get on it...thinking that it's a good thing I didn't have the truck because nothing with four wheels could get in there. So, I'm planning ahead, ready to go, there's the hole, I'm gone. I get up to speed (60mph/96kph), straightened out in the lane, right where I need to be...perfect. Just as I'm going for fourth gear, the stupid #*$&% in the Acura that has also been waiting at the next road, decides that she's bigger than I am and just comes at me:eek:  !!!! I hit both brakes, down shifted, and still couldn't get stopped...I was still screaming as I passed her on the left side with about six inches to spare. If that had been a man, I would have been forced to express my displeasure right there in the middle of the road:mad: ...after I retrieved my testicles from my shoulder blades, of course:o. I learned a long time ago that you can see the wheels on a car move before you see the car itself move and if I hadn't had that extra notice, I don't think I'd have missed this morning.:(

Is it just me or are there more and more people out there nowadays that just don't seem to care about those of us on two wheels?

They either don't care and think they own the road or are blind and didn't see you.
I think all drivers should be forced to take the motorbike driving test, then they'd have to think first

Bod - I sympathise very much so. Sadly in the UK the story is the same.

I've found that riding a bike that looks like this. . . .

http://membres.lycos.fr/scawin/moto/cops_gb_6.JPG

without the word 'police' on it does make people think twice before they cut you up.

My bike (an ex Met police ST1100) is marked up in a similar way.

I prefer 4 wheels to 2 - if you position them correctly - one at each corner, it greatly lessens the chances of tipping over.

They probably ran you off the road because they are sick of the young retarded bike riders that are always cutting off us 4 wheelers. I get so mad when i see someone on a bike that doesn't realize that us on 4 wheels can't stop as fast as them. Some of the 2 wheelers deserve to be ran off of the road for their stupidity.

Im not saying that any of you are these idiots but i had to throw my 2 cents in.

Don't know if you realized it or not, but bikers don't get fender benders when that stuff happens, we go to the hospital. Can't stop as fast? No kidding, we accelerate faster too...you're following too close.

Let them alone and they'll find out soon enough. i've been on two wheels for about 6 weeks now, all commuting miles so far. to be honest i've found most car drivers ok and quite polite about mopeds/motorbikes. the things that annoy me are the fat chelsea tractors (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/3743623.stm) that take up so much of the lane that you can't sqeeze past!

i've only been cut up once so far - at a junction where i was going thankfully slowly. i haven't really had any other problems (other than a slippy manhole cover during a left turn:o ) but i'm sure they'll happen at some stage.

There are also inconsiderate pedestrians, cyclists, car drivers, van drivers, lorry drivers, bus drivers, one is usually more aware of them when on a bike

You can find arguments either way. Depends on the eruption.

Volcanic activity has the ability to affect global climate on still
longer time scales. Over periods of millions or even tens of millions of
years, increased volcanic activity can emit enormous volumes of greenhouse
gases, with the potential of substantial global warming (Pickering & Owen,
1994; Rampino & Volk, 1988). However, the global cooling effects of sulphur
dioxide emissions (Officer & Drake, 1983) will act to counter the greenhouse
warming, and the resultant climate changes remain uncertain. Much will
depend upon the nature of volcanic activity. Basaltic outpourings release
far less sulphur dioxide and ash, proportionally, than do the more explosive
(silicic) eruptions......

Why not get a windsheild?
Actually on a GUZZI forum I asked that question, because my brother was telling me that he is almost (notice almost) afraid to ride a bike without one after having one on his Magna V65. He says to many bugs, rocks, etc to fly up and hit you. So I was wondering if I should put one on my Jackal. Unfortunatly (like Rich here) I get more opinion than experience in the answers, but thought I would ask. I like the look without a windsheild (OK Rich, windscreen for you), but was wondering if the advantages outweigh any disadvantages? Seems like one thing in common for one is the very thing you were saying, cutting back on the wind pressure on higher speed long rides.

(had to find one with people to give you an idea of scale)
Why not get a windsheild?True, they do block wind, bugs, rocks, chickens, spears, arrows, ducks, and geese. However, like you, I don't like the way they look and I compensate for the airflow with a full-face helmet while on the interstate. The wind doesn't really bother me until I go above 70mph. I can tool around all day at 60 and below without having any problems. The downfall with the windshield/windscreen is that most of them are curved and aerodynamically act like a wing when you get caught in the side draft from a large rig. Sometimes it blows you away from it, but usually it'll suck you into the truck. Plus, I'm more likely to clean my clothes than wash the windshield on the bike:o I'll just hang on, thanks:D

FoFa

Yea, I hit a blackbird going 75 MPH (120 KPH) once, caugt it in the left shin. Windsheild would not have helped. Thought I lost the lower part of my leg. After I managed to get the bike pulled over, I was suprised to find everything below the knee still there. But on one hand I could not image what it would be like to catch it in the chest or on a helmet. Killed the dang bird HA!

Hmmmmmmmm, looks like you schooling fails on maths too, the rest of the WORLD contains 96% of the Worlds population, let me see, 4% causes 25% of pollution. Oh and we in Europe have drastically reduced our emissions, of course the US has pi**ed it all out of the window

Unfortunately, for riders in the UK who ride all year round, a windshield is almost a neccesity to offer weather protection.

If a motorcycle is ridden correctly, the side draught from lorries is minimal. Obviously, if one is riding a Harley Davidson tractor, then I agree, the 10 minutes taken to pass a lorry can be a white knuckle ride.

The correct one would be nice:rolleyes: they are actually called articulated lorriesI'll file that one away for future reference...but now I have a "define this" question: according to the dictionary:lorry- Motor truck used for transport of goods. Note: Motor truck is an American term. British synonym for motor truck is Heavy Goods Vehicle. This British term means any vehicle exceeding 7.5 metric tons maximum laden weight.
--a large low horse-drawn wagon without sides
--a large truck designed to carry heavy loads; usually without sides

I've been riding since 1967 (before some of you were born).

If you remember your original training:

How can you make space and create escape routes if you're trapped between two cars and one decides to change lanes without seeing you?

What happens if one of the vehicles decides to discharge a passenger in the middle of the traffic jam and the door opens?

The only way to survive on a motorcycle in an urban area is to ride paranoid. They're all out to get me and I'm a fool if I give them an opportunity.

PS - Only been hit once and the car driver ignored my eye contact and my horn.

PPS - Currently riding an ex Police BMW K750. Never thought to leave the striping on. Great idea.

What happens if one of the vehicles decides to discharge a passenger in the middle of the traffic jam and the door opens?

How can you make space and create escape routes if you're trapped between two cars and one decides to change lanes without seeing you?

.

Both those things can happen anyway thanks to the stupidity and ignorance of car drivers who think the roads belong only to them:mad:

There are birds called "Lorries", we used to have a
