Well, what do you folks think of Steve Irwin's demise? Ironical? Predictable?

I thought he'd go by croc, not stingray.

It's sad when anyone with that kind of enthusiasm and zest for life dies young. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy.

Don't know about you guys but we will miss him terribly in AUS...It is such a loss to Australia and the World. He heart was certainly in the right place...no pun intended......Condolences to his family and friends and work mates.

He really had a lot of enthusiasm for what he did and he was so passionate about the environment and the welfare of animals. It's a shame, really. That said, he did take a lot of risks.

See ya Steve

The thing is, stingrays aren't usually that dangerous.
There has been a total of 3 people killed by stingray in Australian waters. Ever.
(well, ever recorded...)

So at the time he was killed, he was not taking unreasonable risks.

LuvSpudz
09-06-2006, 01:17 AM
He may have taken risks, but with his passion for what he did and his seemingly unending enthusiasm he lived two lifetimes worth before he died.

If we could all only make such a claim.

Does that include baiting a croc with a baby in your arms?

I think thats worse than Wacko Jacko dangling a baby over a balcony:rolleyes:

so thats a 33% increase in one day then

Yeah I'm aware of the baby scenario, as it has been in every news bulletin declaring him dead and gone.
He would have said he was perfectly safe, and from his point of view he probably was. This was a man who'd run off into the bush as a child, a man whose father (also a crocodile hunter) convinced him to jump off boats into crocodile-infested waters. To him being around crocs like that was just normal life, what he grew up with.
Yes I still think he took an unnecessary risk there, but thats from our perspective, our experiences, which clearly weren't his.

Besides, the fella's dead, and that was already dragged through the media (resulting in his show getting cancelled). Leave it be and let people pay their respects.

There's a time and place, and it's before or after his death. It's called having respect.

Just give it a week or so, is that too much?

Yes but sadly that depends on who we're discussing the topics with.

It's the usual problem here on this forum & most others I've seen, some people mainly post comments to provoke a negative response.

So because somebody holds a different opinion, however controversial, that person should keep his, or her, mouth shut?

Hardly free speech is it?

How true. :(

To get back on topic. I personally enjoyed watching his show. Maybe he did bait a croc while holding his baby. It's not a risk I would have taken, but that is how he grew up. To him, I'm sure it was perfectly safe. But hey, everyone makes mistakes. It's too bad that it's tarnishing his image now and being dredged up again after his untimely death.

Back to the subject - I thought he was great.

I can't think of any other TV personality with such genuine enthusiasm and knowlegde.

I hope his shows are shown for years to come, if I ever flick channels and find him on, I invariable stick with him for the rest of the show.

Yes let's all be the same and sing his praises, I'll just ignore the fact that thousands die every day in tragic circumstances.
You can jump to your own conclusions as to why I don't feel so charitable in this instance, that's your prerogative, by all means feel free to use it.

I don't think people here are praising him just because everyone else is.

You can choose to ignore that on another thread if there was one on that topic, I don't think you could though, you would soon have the uncontrollable urge to say something to get a reaction.

It sounds to me that if this thread was about how stupid & irresponsible he was You & a few others would probably be the only few to praise him.

Rich....

Please tell me that you wouldn't even THINK about standing up and pointing out someone's flaws at their memorial service.

Ok... you can be honest and say you'd THINK about it... especially if you detested the person... but then again, if you detested them, you probably wouldn't care to go to the memorial service anyway....

But, would you really DO it?

The reason it's been suggested is because of the amount he's done for tourism and wildlife preservation.
On those grounds, I don't see a problem with it.

He's also been nominated for Australian of the year... call me cynical, but I don't know if he would have been nominated if he was still alive...

Thats one school of thought, another maybe that some people post comments to make others aware or perhaps to cast a different light on things.

Anyway, this geezer Irwin - I understand he did excellent things in the conservation area and will be missed because of that and I hope his good work is continued. I'm not sure a state funeral is necessary though, thats a bit OTT in my book.

I'm not a big fan of these shows where people use wild animals for showbiz and to antagonise them into a defensive attack just for the TV cameras - its little more than a circus - especially if the presenter is holding a baby whilst baiting a croc into an attack.

Everyone jealous because he's getting a state funeral? :D What's the big deal anyway? Does anyone think he cares? He's dead!

When I die, I don't care what's done with what's left of me honestly. I would be just as happy picked by vultures as I would sent into outer space in a super coffin with neon lights to light up the sky so everyone knows I'm there.

I can't imagine that a day that you had to attend a memorial service would exactly be one of the BEST days of anyone's life.

I've only been to a handful myself, thank god.
I'll be attending one in the near future, I'm certain as my brother-in-law is nearing his end with his fight with cancer. (Not much of a fight... kicked his ass.)

Great guy... has his faults... but I'm sure no one will focus on them at the funeral. We'll just talk about the best times we had.

One of my favorites was when the whole OJ thing was going on and they showed something about the hat he was supposedly wearing when he did it. Norm said something about OJ shouting out in the courtroom "Hey, that's my lucky stabbing cap!" I always laugh at that one. :D
