View Full Version : What do you eat?

In parallel with the "Fatties" thread, how about listing what you may eat (truthfully) in an average day. This isn't so some can critisise others, its just a survey if you like to see if there's much difference between the different countries posting here.

I'll start.

Breakfast 6:45 ish - a bowl of cornflakes

11am snack - an oatmeal and hazlenut bar (the size of a Mars bar)

Lunch (12:30ish) - a cheese or ham salad sandwich (just one)

Teatime (about 7:30pm) - a cooked meal, usually meat, 2 veg and gravy (no dessert).

10:30pm ish - shot of vodka and lime;)

If I have a restaurant meal at lunchtime (very very rare), then I don't have anything later as I get filled up with the lunch meal.

We have a takeaway once a week, either from a chip shop, or a chinky, thats usually fridays.

On the weekend at lunch we usually have a bacon sandwich.

In the UK we don't have "doggie bags" usually, so if you don't eat everything in a restaurant, then thats tough (usually)

sure...why not?

Breakfast 6:30 - 8oz non-fat, no-sugar Yogurt & a protein bar

Snack 8:30 - Fruit (usually banana & an apple)

Snack 10:30 - More Fruit & handfull of Almonds

Lunch 11:30 - Sandwich (turkey or roast beast on whole grain)

Pre Lift 3:30 - 30mg Creatine & nitric Oxide

Post Lift 6:30 - 50mg Whey Protein & creatine monohydrate shake

Dinner (before 7:30) - who knows? My wife's a vegetarian, so her dietary restrictions come into play for this one...lean steak, chicken breast, or fish steaks when I'm allowed:(

I have to say this sounds like an idyllic end to the weekend :p

weekdays:

about 05:30 - breakfast - usually a pre-packaged item: pancakes (3) and sausage (2) or (NOT AND...) eggs (1 omelet) & bacon (4 strips) or 1 bowl of cereal (per label, not more than 10g sugar per serving, which eliminates about 70% of all you see on the shelves).

About 09:00 - one pack of 6 whole-wheat crackers with either cheese or peanut butter

About 11:00 - one salad with vinaigrette-style dressing and one sandwich on whole wheat bread.

about 17:30 - whatever my mother-in-law cooks - usually involves a serving of meat (almost never fried) and 2 veggies. Dessert is usually either fruit or a small container of "light" yogurt.

Always if I have a soft drink it is a diet cola. If I have other snacks, they are whole-wheat crackers with no filling.

Twice a week, I go out to dinner with my wife. (We call it "date night.") Our choices are Chinese, Mexican, steak, seafood, Italian, and a couple that are multi-threat.

You might notice several references to whole wheat. It is because of something called the "Sugar Buster's" diet. It is a variant of the Atkins diet that isn't quite as extreme as Atkins but DOES consider glycemic index as a primary consideration of what is better and what is worse for you.

Most weekdays,

Some fruit for breakfast,

Lunch is either bowl of pasta (made the night before) or a couple of sandwiches (something such as Cheese, ham, or sausage) with some fruit.

Usually cook the evening meal tonight it is Thai red chicken curry with (I make the red curry paste myself), rice and tomorrow it sausage with a mustard mash and a Madeira and brown onion gravy, (unless I get some fresh trout the we will have that)

The weekend is slightly different we had a curry Friday night.

Sunday we had
We had porridge with banana for breakfast.
Roast chicken with steamed broccoli & carrots with Yorkshire pudding and a blackberry and apple crumble for evening meal.

The portions are quite large at the moment because I and girlfriend are running the New York marathon in November so are training for that (I have lost about 8 pounds in the last couple on months)

For the next two weeks anything but:

Bread
Pasta
Grains of any kind
Potatoes
And anything with any sugar, that includes fruit.

And after that as many vegetables as I can eat and meat (pork, chicken, fish, beef).

Snacks include lots of nuts (they help keep me regular in the absence of grain in my diet).

If you are interested in loosing weight or keeping it down, sugar and concentrated carbs like bread are to be avoided or at least moderated.

Salads at lunch are my favorite.

My goal 200 lbs.

a lot of amazingly good eaters it seems to me. and everything sounds great. i'm hungry now...

the rice here is great and the local breakfast - nasi lemak (= rice savoury/fat/tasty) - includes rice cooked in coconut milk. i was getting into it so much that i swear i could feel my heart punching back. (coconut milk is bad for the ticker; so sad). so i'm off that except rarely.

there are a lot of good choices here for fruit but i've been very bad lately and eat a lot of - wait for it - Dominos Pizza!

i get 'value meal 2': regular hand-tossed pizza (aloha chicken or tandoori chicken! or classic chicken (there are some krazy kombos here)), chicken wings (i always ask for them to be cooked well-done and peel the skin off of most of them), cinastix (which i often cancel or rarely eat much of) and coke (the coke tastes a bit different here to me, but i've never been much of a pop/soda drinker). i've been too busy and/or lazy to cook proper meals. i still love my cereal and pb&jam sandwiches tho'. i wish i were eating like most of you tho', specially the first few posts.

there are very large indian and chinese populations here and it is easy to find great food from both cultures. malay food leaves a bit to be desired.

it makes me wonder (this could be another thread but you could tack-on answers here...), do you consider yourself healthy? or is the computer killing you slowly with its song?

i used to be much more active - i do blame the computer to a point - and find myself sitting a LOT more than i used to. i'm less healthy now but taking steps to change that.

well, I'm not exactly a healthy eater.

Typical:

Weekdays :

Breakfast : None
I may have a hot cup of tea, (2 cream, 2 sugar) once a week at my desk but usually, it's a bottle of water that I drink throughout the day.

Lunch : Could be anything. I go out to lunch almost everyday between noon and 1pm. At that time I eat about 1/3 of whatever I order. It could be as fattening and delicious as lasagna from our favorite Italian place, or a fried chicken salad with honey mustard dressing, or a burger with mushrooms, or chicken fajitas or a taco salad or a tuna melt and chips.... you get the picture. (leftovers are given to a co-worker) I also order a Coke at that point and drink about half. If I happen to skip lunch, I have some Nutrigrain bars (blueberry or apple) in my desk.

Afternoon 3pm : I keep diet coke at work. I may drink one.

After work : If I'm hungry, I may have some chex mix, or some cashews or some "trail mix" of sunflower seeds, raisins, almonds, etc. If I'm really hungry, I may make myself a toasted ham sandwich or an english muffin... something with bread and butter in the recipe. This, however is very infrequent.
If I thirst, it's Diet Arizona Ice Tea for me.

Dinner : normally no dinner. But in the off chance that I do eat a weekday meal, it's a very small helping of spaghetti or maybe a taco or a piece of grilled chicken, no skin.

8 - 10 pm : depending on my mood or if I feel like a drink that day.... 1 or 2 white russians.

Weekends :

Breakfast : maybe one day of the weekend, around noon, we'll go to a diner that serves breakfast all day. I'll get scrambled eggs and hash browns, chicken fried steak, and pancakes. (that's what my favorite meal comes with... I don't order anything on the side... it's all together.) I ordered this last weekend and my husband said, "We should just split what you usually order... you never eat it all." So that's what we did. We split the whole order and there was enough food to satisfy his hunger and to make me still feel quite full. Hot tea with breakfast. Two creams, two sugars.

Lunch : Well, if I ate breakfast at noon, I'll not have lunch. Although, if we don't go to breakfast, we may stop somewhere later in the day if we're out and about. And then it would be the same type of lunch I have while at work, except it's more like 3 pm. Otherwise, if we're home, I may make a sandwich of tuna or ham.... maybe even the odd peanut butter and jelly... maybe that english muffin with pineapple preserves... or back to the handful of chex mix or nuts.

Dinner : Once a weekend, usually my husband makes something on the grill. Either steak or shrimp or chicken.... rarely pork.... whatever it is, it's delicious and served with a starch of rice, pasta, or potato. I may make corn or broccoli or spinach or cauliflower to accompany. (Oh, hey THERE's the vegetable! lol)

from 5 pm (maybe earlier... depending on my mood) until ????
1, 2, or maybe even 3 white russians if I feel like having drinks that day.

Like I said, not the most healthy of diets. I don't seem to cover the basic food groups every day.... Thank god there's MILK in white russians.

I do take a multi-vitamin in the morning, as well as sublingual B-complex.
I am extremely inactive. I used to go out dancing at least once or twice a week. I used to work out after I picked the kids up from school at 2pm when I worked a part time, low paying job. Now, it's work until 6 at least, maybe go out to happy hour with the guys once a week or so. No dancing... :) just sitting, drinking and laughing. I'm sitting most of my life right now. See? I'm sitting now! :)

10:00 - water, three cups
13:00 - penne arrabiata, orange juice

Mondays and Wednesdays I try to through some extra pasta down my gullet as I go to the dojo and attack people. :D

We're not that fussed:
Breakfast - either toast, a bagel or porridge
Lunch - sandwiches, low fat yogurt
Dinner - soup or chicken with veg or an 'ifits' meal (if it's in we'll have it)
Snacks - whatever fruit is in the apartment (I love frozen bananas!), maybe sweeties or chocolate - particularly when it's 'that time of the month' and i need a seratonin boost!
Drinks - tea with sweetener, 'no added sugar' fruit juice, fresh fruit juices

Not particularly heathly, nor unhealthy - but I try to keep it in moderation.

Ooh, an even easier one to answer:

Because it's what we can afford! :D

My fella read an article which says that wholemeal bread, apples, pears, locally produced vegetables etc. are bad for you. Turns out it was more propaganda towards buying organic. Which is great if you can AFFORD to buy organic. (which we can't)

Mind you, I'm looking forward to the next 'food scare' article which says everything except oxygen will eventually kill you!

My eating:

7:30-8:00 - breakfast - A bowl of cereal, my current choice is "Muesli Flakes"

10:00-11:00 - big cup of tea (black, 2 sugars), maybe a snack if I'm hungry - anything from a muffin to a chocolate bar (or just a handful of M&Ms)

12:00-1:00 - lunch - usually a hot meal of some sort, either reheated leftovers or something from a nearby cafe or fast food joint. Lately it's whatever looks best at the staff canteen... which may or may not have given me food poisoning last week
Drink either coke, water, or nothing.

3:00-5:00 - another big cuppa, another snack

6:00-7:00 - dinner - could be any of a number of things, but often pasta. Drink is usually just water.

9:00-11:00 - dessert - bowl of icecream, or whatever I can find in the fridge/cupboard. Maybe more snacks before/after...

As for alcohol, I'd describe myself as a social drinker who's antisocial... ie, I only drink with friends but don't do it very often. Wine or scotch, maybe some other type of spirits if someone's offering.

Better on what criteria?

If you believe the advertising slogan, "The burgers are better at Hungry Jack's"
(I agree with this actually. Just a shame that the fries & thickshakes are worse...)

yea maybe.

A friend that works at macdonalds told me that they reuse the same oil until it gets to brown and clugy to use, they have to stab bits of food down the oil pump with metal rod to get it flowing somtimes. A bit like a fat persons heart.

Ok, I know I am weighing in late (pun intended), but here goes:

Breakfast: usually low-fat yogurt with 1/2 cup of raspberries/blackberries and 1/4 cup Grape Nuts (otherwise known as Gravel). Sometimes a bagel w/Cream Cheese (can't have a bagel without it), or for really special occasions, a bacon egg & cheese bagel. Then 8 oz Ruby Red juice with the vitamins (multivit, Omega-3 vit E, and Vit C).

I used to have 2nd breakfast when I was pregnant (those were the days), but now around 9 or 10 I have a cup of tea or coffee (lots of flavored creamer)

Lunch: if I bring, half a ham or chicken sandwich, bag of cheese popcorn, and a fruit cup. If I buy, it could be just about anything, and usually is fried, or full of carbs. Yet very tasty, and I usually try to only get small portions, because I don't want to fall asleep at 2.

Usually no snacks in the afternoon, but my boss has what some may call a candy store at his desk - bins full of candy bars, bubble gum, Skittles, Peanut M&Ms, gum, you name it. VERY hard to ignore. So I may have a candy bar. I know I shouldn't, but hell, you only live once!!

Dinner: Whatever the baby didn't finish, and maybe some chicken nuggets or a sandwich for me.

Yeah, the vegetables are conspicuously absent. I love veggies, but I have a very hard time choosing them to eat. They are also not the quickest things on earth to make, and when you are pressed for time with a baby, veggies fall out of favor. And at least in my refrigerator, the Vegetable Crisper is actually called the Vegetable Rotter.

Yeah, not the healthiest. I was much better when I was doing Weight Watchers, but at least I have those tools and can use them when I get desperate.

Pauldohert
12-21-2006, 02:00 AM
Thats a very good idea Rich - when you can't be arsed with preparing the vegetables - just raid the freezer - at the moment we have spinach, green beans, sprouts , peas , cauliflower and broccolli which get used every so often when the fresh stuff seems like to much effort.

Another tip - buy in some healthy (ish) easy to prepare food - we get in semi fresh pasta and pasta sauces from the supermarket which takes 3 minutes or so to heat through. That way when wandering home and can't be bothered with cooking the takeaway can be passed by with the knowledge that there is something quick and not so fat laden at home.

Never tried goji berries. Heard they're the new super-wonder-food, but you need a bank loan to buy them!
It was £2.75 for a 70g packet of sundried goji berries in Holland & Barratt and they were quite tasteless. Picked up a litre carton of the juice from Sainsburys for £3 but I've not tasted it yet.

Got some quinoa in the cupboard but never tried it. Need some inspiration.
I had no idea what to do with it either. I thought it would be like cous cous but it actually absorbed all the water in the pot and turned into a strange mush akin to smaller globules of frogspawn. It's was a strange thing to eat - I ust tossed it in a stir fry as a noodle alternative. Never again. Might curry it next time.

What are acai?
As goji are the new Chinese superberries, acai are the new Brazilian superberries.

SJ - didn't you used to have the diet from hell and do no exercise - and its now totally the other way?

What made you change?

Yesterday for me -

Breakfast
Muesli, Banana

Snack
Apple

Lunch
Home made veggie soup - Broccolli, Parsnip, Sweet Potato, Onion

Snack
Cheese sarnie, glass of orange juice

Tea
Pork Chop with roasties, stuffing, spinach, apple sauce.

Drinks - around 10 cups of tea, green, black, with milk, without.

SJ - didn't you used to have the diet from hell and do no exercise - and its now totally the other way?

What made you change?

Yes. I was eating fast food a hell of a lot, drinking fizzy stuff, loads of beer, and piles of chocolate. Smoked, too.

I tried a bit of exercise, namely badminton and swimming, but my lifestyle didn't change much around them. Then May last year I tried muay thai (thai boxing) when the pool was closed and loved it. From there I've mixed it with Brazilian Ju-jitsu and a bit of wrestling to my routine and the pounds have fallen off. Because of the energy burned in these sessions I found myself drinking water more often. And, since most of the people in these sports, are six pack packing blokes I decided I want one too (a six pack, not a bloke ;) ) I've slowly changed my diet. It begins to consume you. You don't want to go to the pub, you just want to train some more. It's a good cycle. And it makes you more interested in what you eat: I deliberately tried mange tout for the first time last night.

If there's somewhere near that does muay thai training then find out what nights, go along and give it a shot. There's nothing better than someone hitting you and you deciding to hit them back twice as hard. It gets sort of easier as time goes by, but you push yourself more. And in a group environment you don't want to give up in front of everyone. So you keep on pusihing on.

Today as an example:
6.15 am ish: Muesli (home made) and bran flakes with soya milk
Large cup of rooibos tea - orange and cinnamon flavour (no milk)

7.30 Peppermint tea

8.45 Black coffee and piece of malt loaf and banana

9.30 Another black coffee

10.30 5 x ginger oat biscuits (wonderfully strong and low GI!)

11.30 Was really really hungry so had lunch early, which today was leftover homemade prawn risotto then a tin of lentil and veg soup a bit later, well about 12:15.

14:45 Ryvita chewy bar then an apple

Up till 15:30 2x more cups of rooibos tea - this time they were Earl Grey flavour! plus a pomegranate fruit tea with spoonful of honey.

Drink water throughout the day

Tonight will be home-made pesto and pasta (not home made!) followed by either nothing or a soya yogurt, sometimes have a baked apple (with a spot of soya custard). Then another black coffee then one or two more peppermint teas.

Lunch is usually salad with a tin of mackeral and a dollop of egg-free mayo and sometimes some instant cous-cous added, but today had the left-overs!

Try to cook from fresh as much as possible. Am intolerant to cow's milk, eggs, almonds and yeast.

... hence home-made muesli as all bought ones tend to have almonds in, (as well as added sugar and mine tastes much much nicer)!!!
... so am experimenting with other recipes and having to buy yeast free, dairy free, egg free ... it's so hard. Milk, and yeast especially crop up EVERYWHERE!!!

Unfortunately, yeast also covers such things as mushrooms, (which I love), wine (which I love), quorn (which I used to eat heaps of being semi-veggie). Thankfully, as it's not an allergy, I do have a little treat every now and again, like a glass of wine, or a few mushrooms or hot chocolate! I really don't know how I'd cope if I was actually allergic and really feel for those who are.

Have managed to prevent myself going to get a bar of chocolate as there's certain plain one's which don't contain milk. Thankfully, I really like plain choc - would be a catastrophe if I didn't!!!! :D And also prevented going to get crisps (chips - US) which are a big weakness. I do often snack on seeds and berries too but ... ... !!!

I like normal tea, but only like it with milk, so just drink rooibos (commonly sold in UK as Redbush, or TickTock which is a naturally caffeine free Herbal South African drink. Tim and I are strange ... he's the South African who could easily have an IV drip attached to feed him "normal" tea and he can't stand rooibos!!!

If you going to try and change your diet (not dieting- lifestyle change)
you can either do the whole healthy kick not eating anything thats bad for you (which is generally all the nice tasting stuff)

and these generally fade over a course of a couple of weeks - there is only so much brown rice/bread you can eat

I have found - just by eating green veg- fruit and replacing 1 bad food can make a real difference

with my tea I have 1/2 spoon of sugar in the morning then none all day
We whined ourselves off salt 100% (Their is enough salt in average food for most people)
Frying food has almost gone - (not quite cos the occasional fry up - taste fab) - but the sausages will get done in the oven on a rack as will the bacon, mushrooms done in a bit of butter (it is a treat) toast and grilled tomatoes
heaven
i try to eat 2 fruit /veg each day and drink a juice - pominganite ? at the mo - considering that the only veg I would eat was pea

now into asparagus (heaven pan fried and slightly steamed)
Courgettes (typo - big word) green beans (raw or cooked) cabbage if its done well - but broccoli - just cannot get a taste for it - eat it just to eat green veg - b-sprouts are the devils food

I can eat all the fruit you can imagine etc Bananans (Liken em cooked but not raw) and dragon fruit - why no taste
everything esel fruit wise - I have it

its taken a couple of years to get to a healthier basis -- red meat is now so rare - I would rather have chicken - (lamb i am afraid is still my weak point)

we are big on fish (Fish finger sandwich !!Heaven ) for the Yanks fish sticks

Brianwarnock

We fry nothing in animal fat otherwise nothing is forbidden, but we do not over eat, well except on a Sunday
Scallops marinated in Tequila with a gren and pepper salad, crown of Lamb and full roast etc, Franjipane and amoretto tortoni, cheese and biscuits , loads of wine and port to finish, but last night was poached cod loin, large butter beans in a tomato sauce and roast red and yellow peppers, nowt else, except a glass of wine.

I believe that if you avoid additives and over eating, do some moderate exercise you will be ok.

My other local is parkistanie (typo) and thats pretty damn good hotter and flavour is good, (good value- set meal £22.50 for 2 ) thats about $12.00 for a 3 course meal - Popadoms, chicken tikka kebabs , Lamb rogan rosh , chicken rr Bombay potatoes , rice, nanna bread
service is fab as the waiter explain where each dish comes from and also where they are from- real attentive service without being in your face - took the baby there and they loved her .. (she loved the popadoms)

I have health issues and decided to follow the suggestion on http://stayinformed.info/health/weightcontrol.htm .

I make a drink in the morning that includes banana flaxseed oil, vitamins, chromium and a carrot.

For lunch I have a salad, or tuna, or turkey sandwich on spelt break

snack on trail mix, fruits, sometime popcorn or chips.

Dinner varies with Fish, chick, turkey burger with veggies, sometime salad.

I'm gluten intolerant so I use spelt bread, rice noodles, etc. No wheat products.

Does anyone have suggestions thing I can add to my diet..

So far weight gain is not an issue and my health is improving.

have you tried buck wheat.. (check with your doc first)
from the looks of it you seem to be sterring away from red meat - which is good ,
Try eating whats in season

if you get the munchies - chomp on raw carrot and raw celery - both of which are great filler's and next to zero calories (takes more to diegest than whats in them )-

if you a bit on the heavy side and need to trim a few pounds off , then - recommend a a small change in your eating habits, increase your veg by the amount you decrease your meat in take - however you also need to burn this excess off , simple excerise, walking for 15 mins is good - swimmining is excellent, and having a bit of the old rumpy pumpy is even better ...

if you not that active yet (I mean for the walking or swimming) then if you tense your musles for 10 seconds and then rest for 10 seconds and do this for as long as you can repeat it for before you get bored, then next week double it , etc, this will tone your muscules slowly without the hard slogg of going to the gym , alos improve circulation, after about a month , then you can try some gentle walking excersie , like walking up a hill , or taking the stairs instead of the lift - small changes will have great effect..

don't do the pills - they will mess you up..

if your out of shape then exercise is the only true way to tone yourself..

if your eating habits are wrong then change them , start to reduce the red meat - change it to fish or chicken, - if possible replace some meat with another veg, eat raw veg - there more goodness in it (mainly, slightly steamed is better ), drop the coffee (or tea) and have water instead

stop taking sugar in your drink, try a sugar free soft drink -(most taste crap , but you might find one thats acceptable), take a walk, anything thats a bit physical will help
