For the americans who may fall for the hype - "a quality player in the prime of his career."
Beckham can't get a game for Real Madrid and hasn't won a single trophy in the 4 years he's been there. He also can't get a game for England, who similarly haven't won a trophy for 40 years.
Beckham was at some point in the past a very good player though he was never close to being the best. That point is well gone.
He does dye his hair blond and may be the best player in MLS however.

I gather he received the same amount of contempt at the peak of his career as he does now. Didn't he captain your national team for 6 years? How many top soccer clubs wanted to sign him from Real Madrid?
I never have understood why people like to shoot him down.

At 250 million dollars - none.
I don't think I was particulary shooting him down. He always worked hard, seems a decent fella, and can play - so good luck to him.
He used to be a very good player, could still be the best in MLS - but is worth nowhere near 250 million dollars except for the fact that he has blond hair. (sells big in Japan etc)

Beckham is definitly not past his best
He could still cut it in the Premiership, and he has been recalled for England, and done what no-one thought he would, captain England again.
He is a great player, he may not be able to play to his full ability in the MLS, because he does not have the quality of players around him that he is used to, and that can support him.
Many feel like Beckham IS LA Galaxy, like he is taking the whole weight of the team on his shoulders because of his ability.
True, he isnt the player he was 2/3 years ago, but he definitly is not 'past it'.
He was wanted at Madrid, and if he didnt leave them for Galaxy, he was said to have featured heavily in the team plans.
I think the move to LA was also a move for his family, not a 100% footballing decision.
And there has even been talk of Beckham returning to Madrid once his contract is up with Galaxy to coach there.

Either he is at his best or he's past his best. Make your mind up. He can't be both.

no player is at their best at 33, except maybe a goalkeeper

:confused:Simple logic my dear friend. If you are past your best then you are not at your best. If Beckham is not as good a player as he was 2/3 years ago then he is past his best. and not at his best.
Of course it would depend on whether his "best" was any good to start with:eek:
