Liverpool Football Club was taken over by a couple of Americans today, and i thought our friends across the pond might like to read this

George Gillett: Tom and I have been involved in sports for a long time. When you sit in our little country you get an unusual perspective and probably an incorrect one, because we think our sports are pretty popular. Then you come over here and see the tribal aspects of the fans and their affection and support for the team and realise it's a game which is watched by billions. You quickly see this is the most popular sport in the world and that this is one of the most popular clubs in the world. To have the opportunity of getting involved in this is a rare privilege.

Their full statement is here (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/drilldown/N154905070206-1258.htm)

Will they start to play any better?

They play pretty good, just not good enough consisyently, but we expect that in the long term we will win the Premier league and more cups, but money cannot buy everything, but it surely helps.

Is a new stadium high on the list of priorities?

Brianwarnock
02-06-2007, 07:39 AM
Yes, we had to have the deal signed by a date that's fairly close but slips my mind so that LFC can guarantee a new stadium then Euro cash would be available to develop a large inner city area of Liverpool with the new staium as part, and of course the release of the area of the old plus many old terraced house owned by LFC.
I must add that not all local residents are happy, its a complex issue.

I watch these games regularily on the weekend. You know the best bit? There is no cut to the commercial break every 20 seconds.

Has anyone noticed a US knee-jerk to the Ruskies investments in this sport or is it my imagination

Hadn't thought about it like that, not American paranoia is it???

BTW the bit I liked was this

Reminds me of a very funny line I heard in that movie "Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy"

"Oh no, That's just perfectly normal paranoia. Everyone in the universe has that"

Maybe we can get Man U and Liverpool to play a derby.
Call it the America's Cup
Whoops, already taken.

Why are you ignoring Aston Villa , also american owned? and to maintain the theme Tony Bliar could present the cup. :D

BTW, real Football is not played with a round ball...

I suppose it's played with an egg and loads of cissy padding with an abundance of monotonous pauses between play?

doco
02-14-2007, 05:10 AM
Hehehehe, Yup! That's the one. Like to see you play the game without the 'cissy padding'. Wait, no, that's those crazy Ausies... :D

Brianwarnock
02-14-2007, 05:48 AM
Rugby Football is also played without the cissie padding, they have the decency to call their game Rugby not Football i.e. a game played with the feet, I realise that might be a concept a little difficult for some Americans to grasp.

Yeah, it is for this American. I mean, Illeagle Use of Hands! For the Defense?!. Now that is definitely a cissy move. LOL!

Actually, I have no business commenting I guess. I really don't care for sports that much, unless you want to call Poker a sport. I haven't watched a pro/college sporting event in years. Anyway, to me Soccer (foooootball) is a lot like golf on steroids - there doesn't seem to be any strategy beyond organized chaos - 'hit the ball; hope it goes where you planned; move to the next'. But anyway, who needs pads on the field when the real violence is taking place in the stands. You couldn't pay me to go to one of those things.

I rodeoed when I was young and dumb and full of c*m (rode bulls and bare-back bronc); did some power lifting and of course took in all of the scholastic sports with my two sons and now with the grandsons. But, I could live quite well without pro sports and am convinced this is in reality, true for all.

I am much more gentle than Col and Rich, but in their abscence somebody has to add a little spice to the thread and keep those young ex colonials in their place.:D

You trying to tell me that all that matters is the dollar, that it is the be all and end all of an American's existence. ;)

Dan what's this meanI thought he was referring to that o-so-subtle message from the sponsor so inconspicuously placed upon the player's jersey:eek:

And do I have to re-state the actual number of times that the football is actually kicked in American football?

I guarentee you they would not be doing it if there wasn't a dollar, pound, euro, etc. behind it. What does amaze me is they are willing to risk limb and health for that pecuniary gain only to see the government suck up the lion's share.

BTW, no 'ex colonial[s]' here. I have no sovereign in this world!

No, As I wrote my post to have a go at Doco for attacking proper football I hoped that you wouldn't spot it and point to that thread:( ,

Well, lets be clear that I was not making an attack on "proper football" only a little good natured ribbing of my wife's English cousins , I'm perhaps a bit ashamed to say, of French lineage.

So, we're supposed to - ge i'on - ;)

The whole thread was a bit of light banter and I'm not sure why you should be ashamed of French lineage, they make decent wine and cheese, and I'm partial to a bit of good Cognac, plus they were b***** right on Iraq.

I didn't understand the last line!!

It was my botched attempt at writting Cockney: We're supposed to get it on. I won't even get started about the Iraq thing... Only to say beyond wine, cheese and or Cognac, the French have absolutely nothing to offer to the world - particularly when it comes to resolve! Enough said.

Of course highly debateble and as it is and shall remain to be. Only thing I know is I don't know enough REAL information to know. The media are the true liars in any case.

Additionally, the Brits and Yanks have spilt precious blood, right or wrong. The thing that really galls me is we pretend we can have war with rules! And that is bl***y b*** s***!

Truly enough said. I will no longer continue discussion of a subject for which I have scant little QUALITY information to digest. I would say in parting however, that I believe your Tony Blair is far more trustworthy than our George W! Just a personal opinion... I have played enough poker in my life to know body language when I see it and Georgy is hiding something as ALL bl***y lawyer/barrister/politicians do!

Didn't say he was altogether trustworthy. Just that he was moreso than George W. I don't believe it is the politician necessarily, it is the attorney (barrister) at the core. All attorneys are a clear and present danger to society at large - any society.

"In the new world order, you first eliminate all attorneys" author forgotten ;) If a legal system is so complex that any reasonably intelligent individual within that system cannot defend themselves as a result of that complexity. Then it is a society doomed to failure due to corruption and manipulation. Certainly this is what we see in the USA. A good example is the 60,000 pages of tax code - what an embarrassment that is.
