View Full Version : War games
Pauldohert 02-15-2007, 05:57 AM Could anyone point me in the direction of a strategy/war game please - I havn't played one since the spectrum, 20 something years ago - does this type of game still exist - or have they been eaten by quick moving graphically brilliant shootem ups.
If anyone else can remember, Arnhem on the speccy was one I particulary liked - so a modern version of that kind of thing would be grand - I have looked in the shops but nothing????
Cheers

Bodisathva 02-15-2007, 09:17 AM Paul, I think you're looking for a good RTS (Real Time Strategy). Usually they include building your economy, infrastructure, army, etc.
Command & Conquer is one of the games with the longest lineage. Start with the original C&C, up through C&C: Red Alert, and the last one I played was C&C: Generals.
Into something with a fantasy flair? Try The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth. I really enjoyed the first one, but haven't had the opportunity to try the second installment yet.
For Trekkies, there's always the Star Trek: Armada games. II had better graphics and better controls, but the story line was not as good.
Star Wars? Play Star Wars: Empire at War...also lots of fun
I personally prefer these to the FPS type games because it lends itself to more thought than just blindly killing anything that moves;)
KalelGmoon 02-15-2007, 09:45 AM I bought a compilation of all the Command and Conquer games a few weeks ago for about 20 bucks , around 10 quid UK, and it has all the games through the latest. like 12 games or so total. you might also check out Dune 2000 I think is the PC version. especially if you are a Herbert and Arrakis fan.
Pauldohert 02-16-2007, 01:11 AM Yes - Thanks everyone - I have C&C and its about the only game that I ever play. But the kind of thing I am after is more strategy than this and less shooting at things etc - as I say I am not even sure this kind of thing exists anymore.

hmmm...www.chessgames.com:confused:
Military strategy?(see previous posts)
Economic Strategy? (Rollercoaster tycoon type stuff)
Relationship Strategies? (the Sims, Playboy: the Mansion, etc)
they even have an electronic version of Stratego (http://www.google.com/pagead/iclk?sa=l&ai=B7yEkeKLVRYKiGoa8hASC0e1g5sOZD7742-wG7OPg_AHAqQcIABABGAE4AFDrwL_D_v____8BYMnGiIzQpNwR mAH2hgGYAZSXA5gBuJIGmAG-kgaYAYSTBqABmMDB_wPIAQE&adurl=http://www.windowsgames.co.uk/thegeneral.html)...not quite sure what you're looking for.
Pauldohert 02-16-2007, 06:34 AM I guess somewhere in this lot is the type of thing I am looking for -

like being the general in a control room more than seeing/doing any fighting stuff.

Age of Empires (www.ageofempires.com) perhaps?
Pauldohert 02-16-2007, 07:42 AM Cheers - I will investigate over the weekend.
Newman 03-28-2007, 09:51 AM I really liked the Microsoft Close Combat saga. It might be a bit old (the 5th came out in 2000), but it sounds like what you are looking for. It is real time strategies from WWII.
CivilizationIV might also be good for you. It is not real time but needs a lot of strategy. Although it starts slowly and is not only about war, some scenarios are more war-like than others.
Jakboi 03-29-2007, 11:06 AM Do you have STEAM?
My favorite right now is DEFCON...its rather new and is developed after the 1983 or so movie War Games with Matthew Broderick.
Its Global Thermo Nuclear War...
You have Stealth Bombers...Subs...Nukes...and mass destruction...
Google Defcon...it can be played with STEAM or I think stand alone against other players via Internet.
Its nice.
There are many new war on lines games now!!!!! you can try to join the RF EXTREME with us we can be allied in the three race in RF!!!! it so very fun to play specially when the chip war will start to battle on the chip all three races are desperate to get the chip!! or the get some elementals that is 25,25,25,25 you will be 100% complete!!

rsmonkey 07-25-2007, 07:31 AM urmm dunno if ne1 has mentioned it but the Total War series have had much critical acclaim and you get the chance to control armies and defeat the world depending on what you choose.. I'd advise starting with Rome Total War first... badass strat game!

I know it has been quite late answer but I would suggest to get Total War games, http://www.totalwar.com/ one of the best games I have ever played.
you can also try Command and Conqure like one of the guys here mentioned.
