I erased boot.ini file on my laptop and can't boot it now. What tool can be used to restore it? I need recovery utility that can also boot itself.

The boot.ini file is a small one which you can create in Notepad.
It would look something like this for XP :

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

the main trouble for me was I had no windows disk to boot laptop. In the end I found a third party software Active@ Undelete that helped me. I had the ability to boot itself from a disk and then recover, that was the trick..
