My Win 2k professional has turned off all sound and greyed out the button enabling volume control in the media icon.

I thought it might have had something to do with Win Media player hotfixes, so I removed them and still cannot get the sound back.

It sounds like your driver no longer likes your audio card. Have you looked at your audio card in Device Manager to see if everything is ok?
