The same as any game, to win.

Thanks for your invaluable insight

I meant so you try to hit the other persons thing - looks like some king of nut on a string (?) So if you try to hit it and miss you loose?

The object of the game is to smash your opponents 'conker' first by taking it in turns to throw the conker overhand. It's an old children's game that has become a victim of the PC police. They recently banned (in some schools) children playing conkers without protective goggles, face mask, flak jacket and HASMAT suit :p

There is a kind of scoring system where you start with a none-er (or bully-one as we did) and you score goes up by the 'ranking' of your opponents conker.

So if you have a one-er that beats a five-er yours becomes a six-er.

Clicky (http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A657623) and Clicky (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conker) with variations on the rules.

We were always was on the trail of that elusive substance you could soak your conker in that would make it invincible :D and one thing I do remember is if you missed you have to watch out for the follow through or you'll get a big whack on your elbow.

Thanks for the info and links Minkey...

I suppose I could see how it could take off as a pastime... I thought it funny how certain groups want to ban it - !

I knew of a scout troop that wanted to ban playing with sticks because a kid got hurt with one - :)

:)

edit: It reminded me of clackers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clackers) we played with back school that were banned because kids were getting hurt :)

I know it's pathetic  if they baned every thing I ever hurt my self with as a kid we wouldn't have any bikes, skateboards, anything hot or cold, matches, lighters (yes I was a bit of a firebug ;)) paper, cardboard, metal, lawnmowers, fences, scaffolding, electricity etc. you get the idea (oh and conkers of course :D)

So one of the guys in the video was warned about something - Was he going to pull his conker way back and swing away like a madman? I'm guessing there are specific rules about how you hold your nut before you pull it back and swing it around?

We used to soak ours in vinegar and slowly bake in the oven until caught by mum and given a smack round the head, at which point conker was ready.

Ken your Link didn't give me anything but a video of Hilary clinton, hence my facetious response. :D

Sorry... At least you didn't get 'w'. So you never saw the video link?

I think Dad may have some chestnuts in his car shed. I'll have to see if I can stir me up a game of conkers this weekend :)

iirc not past your shoulder but he was twirling it over his head - a clear violation of rule 26 b :p

BTW I do not have any rules about how I hold my nuts before I pull them back and swing them around :D

If you think conkers is odd how about some cheese rolling (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZC5ykhXDDbo) happens every year in Gloucestershire and yes people do get injured.

mmm odd it was youtube - ok try this one Dailymotion (http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/cheese+rolling/video/x249zf_gloucestershire-cheese-rolling-2007_extreme) or here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/gloucestershire/content/articles/2007/05/28/cheese_rolling_2007_feature.shtml) though it is the BBC so maybe only available to UK users (oh and you need real player or at least it's browser plugin)

The bbc link worked... I hate to say this but they remind me of some of our redneck neighbors around here.... :D:D

edit: Except that ours would probably relish cutting cheese rather than rolling with it :eek::p
