So what do you guys think? Is there that much of a fan base over there in london for this to be worth doing?

Pauldohert

I'm not in London but - There is already show piece games and a team in the European league - there used to be anyhow. (in London)

Is it worth doing - I doubt it.

They'll sell tickets for a bomb and do plenty of merchandising - so short term its a winner I guess.

Long term I can't see anyone except expats, and unsporty teenage lads and vicarious inadequates being interested.

I can see it selling out Wembly for a once a year event. Lots of hype and marketing to go along with it.
I don't see it going on a regular basis.
Brits will go once to see what all the fuss is about, but they have their own sports to keep them occupied.

There is one concept that I would like to see transferred to UK football. Colour at home, white on the road. No 6 different strips for your kids to pester you to buy.

Actually they played pre-season games (exhibition) in London for 3 years back in the 90's. They got good crowds the first 2 years, the third was only about half filled so they stopped.
When you look at it, its a pretty expensive undertaking to fly 80-100 players plus trainers, coaches etc. to the UK, put them up at a hotel for a few days, feed them and hire a practice facility for just one game.
They probably turned a profit on this game, but an annual event would probably fizzle out after a year or two.
An NFL franchise based in London is not a reasonable probability for these reasons.

The Buffalo Bills are talking about playing two regular season home games in Toronto starting next season.
This is not without precedent. The Green Bay Packers played 2 home games a year in Milwaukee until the 1980's.
Toronto media mogul Ted Rogers is interested in acquiring the team. The current owner Ralph Wilson is in his 80's and has promised the team will not leave Buffalo while he is alive.
Once he passes its a pretty safe bet his children will sell the team. An NFL franchise goes for about $1 Billion these days (thats $999,999,990 Canadian) :D.
The question is, will the NFL allow a full time team in Canada? There is almost no interest in the US in teams outside America.
When the Toronto Blue Jays won two World's Series in the 1990's the TV ratings Stateside were the worst in the history of the sport.

Yeah... they were talking about the Buffalo Bills playing at our stadium... as the BUFFALO Bills... because game attendance there is dropping every year.

If you want to move the team to Toronto to live, practice and play... MAKE IT A TORONTO TEAM

I was in Kyoto towards end of Sept, and I'm sure the baseball game a couple went to watch included an American team called Boston something or other, I thing it was some kind of 4 team tournament.
The couple are cricket fanatics but love the razzmatazz of baseball.

So why not change the name? It is effectively a lie. Like the WMD that never were. Still if Bush can lie then I guess it's accepted as normal in the USA.

The US economy is in meltdown but they (Americans) say on the news there's no problem. Have a look in Detroit at the unemployment and misery there - can the rest of the USA be the same?

With a few exceptions, the Canadian economy is booming right now.

One exception is Windsor Ontario which is right across the river from Detroit and also is a major auto manufacturing centre.

Because they like schoolgirly games like rounders, and driving cars in circles because left and right turns are too complex for them.
Even if they do have 'contact' sports (like their "football") they have to be done up like michelin man to avoid breaking a nail or damaging their hairstyles.

Actually, the US does play rugby. Their team is called the "Eagles" (oddly enough).
You have to remember that rugby is very much a second-tier sport in North America. The game is played but mostly by amateurs. There's no Rugby League to siphon off the best players and give them lots of money to stay in condition for World Cups and the like.

Hey you guys, quit pickin' on us Americans!

I was thinking as a gift towards better relations with the UK I am going to give you the NFL. That's right it's yours, have fun with it, but please be careful as some of our Football players are prone to being a bit naughty at times. I would go so far as to say they are "thugs", but once you get to know them you'll like them even less. Also, please make sure that they check in with their probation officers on a regular basis.

Oh, while I'm in such a giving mood I am going to give you our NBL too. It should be noted that the same care is required as above. I hope you enjoy my gift to you and please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.

Enjoy!

Montoya, Carpontier, Franciti. And they suck at it because they can't DRIVE a car. Sure its easy to turn the steering wheel in those tiny, low to the ground cars and drive with the accelerator. Its a whole nother thing to get up on the wheel and actually drive with the steering wheel and set the car up properly going into the corner. Whole lot less room for error, especially if you expect to be good.

Oh please, don't give the Brits anymore fuel for the fire. While NASCAR might require skill at driving, the skill has been watered down by team ownership. I quite enjoy watching LeMans. NASCAR, not so much. I agree that it is boring to watch.

That being said, I think it takes a tremendous amount of skill to control a car at those speeds, and to maintain those speeds around an oval with 50 other cars potentially within inches of the one you are driving.

:p

There arn't 800 corners as such because the tracks are oval in shape so the 'corners' at the ends are just one gentle curve.

If there were proper corners, the drivers would get confused because they may have to change gear or ease off on the accelerator.

Ex F1 drivers do it for the money - which is massive and also because it's less strenuous than F1. Thats why Michael Andretti gave up a brief foray into F1 - he just couldn't hack it. So he decided to go the easy money route in NASCAR

Col

Edit - I mentioned gear changing, which was silly, most US cars are auto so thats even easier.

statsman
12-05-2007, 02:34 PM
Actually NASCAR cars have manual transmissions. Otherwise they couldn't push start them when they won't start (check footwork shots in "Days of Thunder").
Some Americans do prefer the manual to the automatic. It's just finding a car where its available.
The auto companies made the choice to go to automatics, not the consumer. A friend of mine only drives cars with manual transmissions. The dealer usually had to special order it.
Of course the Pontiac or Chev at the dealership bears very little resemblance to the one the track anyway (exept for the body).

Michael Andretti's father Mario made a brief pit stop in F1 back in the 70's. Seems Ferrari lost a driver, the NASCAR season was over and Mario filled in for the last 3 F1 races that season. Finished in the top 10 in all 3 as I recall. He was already under contract for the following NASCAR season so that was the extent of his F1.

I went to the NFL match at Wembley and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think some of you would be surprised how many proper NFL fans there are in the UK. The amount of people with team shirts on at the match tells me very few people were there 'out of curiosity'. The reason the pre-season games stopped being successful is because they were pre-season games. Us Brit NFL fans don't want to see second string players in a meaningless match. I'm sure a regular season game every other year will continue to sell out (It will be every other year at most because Germany will get the other game).

In my head I remember it being a 7pm Kick-off London time but if it was 4pm EST then it must have been 8pm, I do remember getting home pretty late! A great thing about the NFL is that you can drink beer in your seat unlike at the Football (soccer). I went to the England v Croatia match a couple of weeks later and there was no alcohol for sale in the entire stadium! At least at most football grounds in the UK you can have a drink in the concourse.
