All these examples do NOT imply that gasoline is cheap; it just illustrates how outrageous some prices are.
You will be really shocked by the last one (at least, I was)!!!
This makes one think, and also puts things into perspective.
Diet Snapple, 16 oz, $1.29 ... $10.32 per gallon!
Lipton Ice Tea, 16 oz, $1.19 ... $9.52 per gallon!
Gatorade, 20 oz, $1.59 ..... $10.17 per gallon!
Ocean Spray, 16 oz, $1.25 .. $10.00 per gallon!
Brake Fluid, 12 oz, $3.15 .... $33.60 per gallon!
Vick's Nyquil, 6 oz, $8.35 ... $178.13 per gallon!
Pepto Bismol, 4 oz, $3.85 . $123.20 per gallon!
Whiteout, 7 oz, $1.39 ......... $25.42 per gallon!
Scope, 1.5 oz, $0.99 .....$84.48 per gallon!
And this is the REAL KICKER.
Evian water, 9 oz, $1.49 ...$21.19 per gallon !
$21.19 for a gallon of WATER!!
and the buyers don't even know the source
(Evian spelled backwards is Naive.)
Ever wonder why computer printers are so cheap? So they can hook you for the ink. Someone calculated the cost of the ink at, you won't believe it but it's true; $5,200 a gal.
$5200 A GALLON!!!
So, the next time you're at the pump, be glad your car doesn't run on water, Scope, Whiteout, Pepto Bismol, Nyquil or, God forbid, Printer Ink!!!!!
:p

True, running your car on hydrogen will cost you an approx. $ 32,00 / gallon ;)
ColinEssex 04-25-2008, 08:47 AM Why do people buy bottled water?
In the UK the tap water is very drinkable and pure - yet people here buy tons of bottled water. Even in blind tasting tests people are not able to tell the difference.
Is the tap water in the USA drinkable?
Col
georgedwilkinson 04-25-2008, 09:01 AM US tap water is full of chemicals that are supposed to make the water drinkable/good for you (chlorine and flouride come to mind). Also, the water infrastructure is aging in many US cities and there are frequent pipe breaks...when this occurs, it is recommended that you boil your water.
I guess there has been so much negative press and viral marketing, people are afraid to drink tap water in the US (just speaking for my small group of influence). I have no doubt that most tap water is just as good for you as bottled water.

I have no doubt some of the bottlers use tap water - :p

Purified, of course.
We use tap water but run it through a Brita filter just to make it taste better. There is nothing wrong with the water here really, but it just tastes better after being run through a filter.
KenHigg 04-25-2008, 10:51 AM The building where I work is 30+ years old and a water main broke and they had to repair it. Some of my co-workers said in the 18" water main they saw about 8 inches of green algae on the walls. ugh. That's when bottled water took off around here. I'm guessing that's the norm most anywhere in the world where the system has been in place for a while.
A new buzz-word I keep hearing on the fix-it shows I watch is gray-water. Where you re-use dish and bath type water for toilets and watering the lawn. Wonder if anybody really does this in the real world...:p
Vassago 04-25-2008, 10:59 AM Some of the "chemicals" that are removed from "purified" water are actually beneficial to our health as well according to many studies.
I mainly drink tap water. I only buy bottled water when I don't have access to tap water, such as on the road.

Huh? There's usually a water hose around back at most gas stations :p

I tried to take the water hose on the road with me once, but they wouldn't have it, so I'm stuck buying the bottles.

:pMy car runs on a battery, not water.
And I believe EVIAN comes from France...?? I think it runs off of the Alps... That's why it's so expensive... :pTrue, running your car on hydrogen will cost you an approx. $ 32,00 / gallon ;)Unless you're running it in space. Plenty of Hydro resources out in that area. :)Is the tap water in the USA drinkable? Not in my area. We get our water from the river, and its color is the same as my dirty old couch in the living room.
Ron_dK 04-27-2008, 12:00 AM Unless you're running it in space. Plenty of Hydro resources out in that area.
Unfortunately that's only atomic hydrogen, not molecular. Quite difficult to put atomic hydrogen in the bottle or tank  You might propose that to BMW ;)
ColinEssex 04-27-2008, 12:50 AM Ken - In the UK gas comes out of pipes for cooking, it's not sold by the gallon but cubic metres. However, if you're referring to petrol - it costs $10 per gallon in the UK.
I fail to see the point of printer ink being compared to a gallon of anything. I'm sure a gallon of Tippex would be quite alot.
Why not work out how much a gallon of liquid gold is.

Since there is a alkylate, an expensive gasoline additive that some in the industry are calling “liquid gold, gas prices may boost to $ 4/gallon
It's almost time to watch next F1 race in Barcelona. Guess Raikonen is going to win, who would be running approx 1 liter/km
which will cost him some € 440,- ( $ 697.57)

ajetrumpet 04-27-2008, 05:40 AM Unfortunately that's only atomic hydrogen, not molecular. Quite difficult to put atomic hydrogen in the bottle or tank  You might propose that to BMW ;)All you have to do is just communicate with the atoms that have broken off of the H2's in space. Tell them to go back to the bubble from which they came. That'll solve that problem... :p
Sum Guy 04-27-2008, 06:41 AM I hope this isn't going to become another GO BACK WHERE YOU CAME FROM threads. :D
statsman 04-27-2008, 09:53 AM If you check to labels of many of the bottled waters on the market you will find they say "purified" or "filtered".
That's right folks, its just plain old tap water thats been run through a Brita or the equivilent.
I used to live in a city where my neighbour was a film processing plant. When the price of silver went sky high they placed a recovery system in the plant to recover the silver. For decades however they just flushed it down the drain. I am anxiously awaiting the day when the city decides to replace the sewers. Despite the smell, it will probably be worthwhile to steal the old pipes and salvage the silver. Probably a small fortune there.
ColinEssex 04-27-2008, 12:46 PM gas prices may boost to $ 4/gallon
We can only dream of the good old days when petrol was $4 (£2) per gallon.

Mike375 04-27-2008, 01:44 PM Petrol in Australia is around $1.30US to $1.40US a litre.

ColHey Colin,
how long ago was that? They keep saying that prices in this country are starting to look like Europe. So, is that true? How much are petrol prices right now?
Mike375 04-27-2008, 03:13 PM Adam
The US gallon is 3.78 litres and the Imperial gallon is 4.54 litres.
Australian petrol would be around $5US per US gallon

Petrol in the UK is around $10 (US) per gallon. If you can get it - there's a strike on at the moment causing a shortage.

Dennisk 04-28-2008, 02:35 AM I have never bought a plastic bottle of drinking water. Did you know its takes 9 litres of water just to make a litre plastic bottle.
When I grew up we bought lemonade in glass bottles, and when you returned the bottle, you got 3d back (note :3d not 3p - that 3 pre decimal pence).
Saw a program recently about bottled water. Spring water from Fiji is bottled and shipped halfway across the world. Whilst back home in Fiji half the population do not have access to clean drinking water. The source of the spring has been fenced off and not accessible to the locals. What a shame!

I saw that - the biggest customers were the USA. They care nothing of other peoples plight as long as they get what they want.
Col
Dennisk 04-28-2008, 05:52 AM I remember when 5 gallons of petrol cost 30 bob.
KenHigg 04-28-2008, 05:58 AM What (or how much in us dollars) is a 'bob' - ?
Rabbie 04-28-2008, 06:11 AM What (or how much in us dollars) is a 'bob' - ? a'bob' is a slang term for a shilling. so in US money a 'bob' is approximately 10 cents.
KenHigg 04-28-2008, 06:14 AM In that case, when I was growing up cutting grass for a little spending money, I used to buy gas for around 3 bob / gal. :p
Ron_dK 04-28-2008, 06:16 AM What (or how much in us dollars) is a 'bob' - ?
Approx. 10,000 posts :D

Oh, I feel so faint, I must have water from poor diseased/thirsty children in Fiji.
ROFLMAO!!!!
You gotta be kidding! You're just yankin' our chains, right?
Nope, he's not kidding. I read about that too somewhere when the BBC news site ran an article on it.
I'm lucky enough to come from an area in England where the water isn't flourided by default and I have to say it tastes better for it. The stuff in other counties just tastes like someone's dumped a tube of toothpaste in it.
In such a circumstance I could easily understand people drinking bottled, although that just tends to taste of the pastic bottle its been sitting in for weeks...

Unless it is obviously horrid, people get used to the taste of their water, and I really enjoy ours and have taken to bring some in a bottle when I travel around because some water doesnt taste right to me. When I visit anywhere in town the water smells to me like it is syphoned out of a swimming pool because of the chlorine like scent but locals say it tastes 'normal'. And ya some bottled water tastes like bottle, but I find others to taste like dust.
A couple of our "towny" friends dont like our well water because it doesnt taste like anything
