View Full Version : American Independence Day Rabbie 07-04-2008, 01:25 AM Many congratulations to all my american friends on this forum on the anniversary of the signing of the "Declaration of Independence". I hope you all have a pleasant holiday. Alc 07-04-2008, 04:17 AM I hope the celebrations go well for all our American Friends. Yep, all the best to them (but if any are actually logged on and reading this then they really do misunderstand the idea of a holiday ;)). The office I'm in deals a lot with the US stock market, so we're expecting a nice, lazy day with no phone calls in. Fifty2One 07-05-2008, 07:48 AM Happy July 4th ColinEssex 07-05-2008, 08:34 AM Is the 4th of July where they eat loads of turkey? How many Americans here actually have a flag in their front garden (yard)? If so why? Col Alisa 07-07-2008, 07:08 AM It was actually more pleasant than I expected - while the president was giving a speech at a naturalization ceremony for new citizens, a bunch of protesters started yelling obscenities and waving "impeach bush" flags. Fox news was broadcasting it live, and you could hear the protesters yelling even though the cameraman kept a very tight shot on Bush's face so you couldn't see anything. As the security guards were dragging the protesters away, Bush said, in America, we believe in free speech. It was an altogether inspiring event. redneckgeek 07-07-2008, 07:20 AM Is the 4th of July where they eat loads of turkey? How many Americans here actually have a flag in their front garden (yard)? If so why? Col I do fly one, but only on certain holidays, like the July 4th. I fly it to honor those who fought(fight) to keep this country free. I view flying it every day as a statement of patriotism. I don't feel very patriotic about where the country is at anymore - and I'm terrified about where it is headed. Our flag code allows for flying the flag upside down as a distress signal, that's beginning to show up more and more nowadays. BTW: I don't really care for turkey that much, so Thanksgiving is not one of my favorite holidays. oumahexi 07-07-2008, 07:29 AM I think it looks brilliant flying the flag. We were only in the states briefly, although they do the same in a lot of houses in Niagra on the Lake in Canada. It does show patriotism, maybe we could learn from that. If we were a bit more patriotic, maybe we wouldn't be so quick to just let people come into our country and take over... Vassago 07-07-2008, 11:38 AM Hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th of July. ColinEssex 07-07-2008, 01:54 PM I fly it to honor those who fought(fight) to keep this country free. I read that as those who fight to capture the oilwells for the USA, the sole reason for the Iraq invasion. Col redneckgeek 07-07-2008, 02:41 PM I read that as those who fight to capture the oilwells for the USA, the sole reason for the Iraq invasion. Col Yeah, I thought we were going to get free oil out of the deal! BarryMK 07-08-2008, 02:09 AM Do you think we'll get a holiday when we sign our declaration of independence? . You can gladly have your independence when we get independence from Scottish politicians. Please take Brown and all the other idiots from north of the border currently infesting our Parliament back where they belong....and keep them there. (Please do not infer from my invective that I have a problem with the Scots as a whole - I do not, just their bloody politicos.) PS I trust our friends across the pond did have a good day. Rabbie 07-08-2008, 02:12 AM You can gladly have your independence when we get independence from Scottish politicians. PS I trust our friends across the pond did have a good day.I think most normal people have a healthy cynicism towards all politicians - at least they ought to:D BarryMK 07-08-2008, 02:30 AM I think most normal people have a healthy cynicism towards all politicians - at least they ought to:D I'm with you there. The Eagle's lyrics from "Get Over It" - "let's kill all the lawyers, kill 'em tonight" has a lot to recommend it as most of our politicians are lawyers too. Take away the Bishops, Imams and the like, politicians, lawyers and generals and the world would be a pretty good place.:) BarryMK 07-08-2008, 04:58 AM Oh, thanks Barry, but you guys voted for him, you can keep him. :D Well I bloody didn't! Pleeeeease take him back. Can't you make him governor of a small, wet, windy island in the outer Hebrides - population 5 sheep? Brianwarnock 07-08-2008, 05:03 AM Well I bloody didn't! Pleeeeease take him back. Can't you make him governor of a small, wet, windy island in the outer Hebrides - population 5 sheep? What have got against sheep? Brian Great minds oumahexi, mind you I have had my surname spelt warlock and we do originate from Scotland way back. BarryMK 07-08-2008, 07:05 AM Sorry Ouma that island is too close to civilisation. I was thinking more along the lines of Fastnet Rock................... :D It also has the advantage of occasionally getting swamped by the Atlantic.;) oumahexi 07-08-2008, 07:09 AM Sorry Ouma that island is too close to civilisation. Col georgedwilkinson 07-08-2008, 03:02 PM Are we still talking about this? There was a time when women were the most spiritually enlightened members of society. In Neolithic times we had largely matriarchal societies world wide. Most of our dieties were female. What's so special about this monolateral god that women can't spread his word? And how come he doesn't have a missus? Rabbie 07-09-2008, 01:21 AM What's wrong with women Bishops? What's so special about this monolateral god that women can't spread his word? And how come he doesn't have a missus? I welcome the recent decision to allow women bishops as I believe in equal opportunity. I am afraid I cannot possibly comment on "this monolateral god " as I don't believe in his existence. I am sure people can draw their own conclusions about his reasons for not being married. oumahexi 07-09-2008, 01:26 AM I am sure people can draw their own conclusions about his reasons for not being married. I'm sure they will, but it is totally un-natural. Everything in nature has polarisis to balance it out, life-death, good-bad, male-female. If it was not an invention, or bad interpretation, then it would have a consort. When our foremothers and fathers invented their dieties, they had the good grace to let them have a bit of company, indeed, they even created entire households of gods and goddesses. I think it's a shame for this one, I think they should not only allow female Bishops but give the god a companion, let it have some fun for goodness sake! ;):D georgedwilkinson 07-09-2008, 03:41 AM I am afraid I cannot possibly comment on "this monolateral god " as I don't believe in his existence.
