is it possible?
i have a few variables in my pivot table report filter.
i'd like to narrow down the report by using one (or more) of the variables.
can i make the other variable filters then show ONLY the choices pertaining to remaining, filtered data?
thanks,
l.
excel 2007.

You want to check "show all items" double click on the pivot field where the items that you want to show should be then tick the "show items with no data" box in the bottom left hand corner.
thanks.
i probably didn't explain myself clearly, but i actually want the opposite, sort of.
let me give an example -
in excel 2007 -
i have 'category' and 'sub-category' variables which i use as my filter (big filter, above the table with all the data). i select 'small' in my category filter. now, when i go to my 'sub-category' filter, i'd like to see ONLY choices that pertain to the 'small' category (e.g. 'tiny', 'smallish' and 'little'), and NOT all the others, pertaining to 'categories' i filtered out ('medium', 'huge', 'enormous', etc).

Can you post the spreadsheet?
sure..
filter by category, i.e. select one in cell G2 (for example 'large'). now if you want to filter by sub-category, in cell G3, you still see all the possible sub-categories. i'd like to see only two - 'big' and 'huge'.
this is a very simplified example, in reality i am doing this with thousands of possible choices, so it would really help if i can get rid of extras..
thanks,

I get what you are wanting to do now. I would have thought there must be someway of doing this automatically. I'll have a think about it for now.
