what do grey check boxes mean and how can i make them look white again?

Hope you dont mind a novice trying to help on this. Here are my thoughts on your problem.
Grey check boxes indicate a state for the box where no value is set (It is neither Yes or No). This is commonly seen when going to filter by form. To set the box to white again set the value of the control to No/False or 0.

Noel is on the right track. Set the Default Value of the Checkbox to 0 and the 'flyscreen' that you see will not be there....
