View Full Version : Red sky at night, California's alight

I see the annual burning of California is under way yet again.

I heard that some historic buildings were burned down - some dating back to the mid 1990's.

When will people in the USA learn to live:-

a) Not in a California fire area.

b) Not in tornado alley area.

c) Not in New Orleans or in Florida where they have hurricanes every month.

If they continue to live there, don't come crying to us when everything is destroyed. Oh and try using bricks to build houses not flimsy wood.

I suppose it seems logical to you for people to live in danger zones and risk getting their houses destroyed or worse, they get killed or injured. What is it? Some macho thing?

I am trying to help these people by suggesting they move - they obviously haven't thought of it themselves.

It's like the film of some black kid in Africa who walks 5 miles to fill a jug with water, then walks 5 miles back.
Why not move the village / house closer to the water? It could all be paid for out of the millions of pounds we send them in relief - if there is any left after funding their civil war.

There is no credible evidence that we are here to fulfil some other deeper purpose.

Colin,
The way to get people to actually listen to your words; is to have some level of credibility.

You get this by knowing a little of what you are talking about.

Since you insist on continuing to expound on subjects, which you obviously have no knowledge what-so-ever, I’ve prepared a list of methods that may help you fake it a little better.

First : never say something so stupid that anyone familiar with the subject won’t automatically dismiss you as a lunatic.

Second: and you’re actually good at this part, make statements that have no substance, that way people will disregard that part and spend their mental energy looking for something to disagree with.

Third: back up your erroneous beliefs with loud shouting and emotional antics. That way some people will be so distracted that they will forget what you had to say to begin with.

But they will have listened.

By the way Col, just joking around with you.

Colin, you are quite insensitive in your own little way. I find you offensive enough to let you know just how low you are in my estimation.

Disasters happen when they happen and where they happen. To say "don't live there" is indicative that you don't understand anything about people. Anything at all.

Next thing you know, you'll comment that folks should have known better than to work in the twin towers in New York because they were such easy targets.

Then you'll suggest that people should have known to keep out of London during the time of the Black Death.

After that, you'll probably say that people should have had more sense than to get on a plane having anything to do with Locherbie, Scotland.

I happen to be a New Orleans native. That disaster was man-made through negligence of the agency responsible for levee construction and maintenance. If the levees had held, we would have had spot street flooding and that's it. But the levees failed due to shoddy construction - a man-made catastrophe. When the levees failed, a lot of the city was flooded. Heck, where I live has flooded only twice in something like 30 years. Both times, it was when the flood control pumps were off. When the pumps are on, we are able to handle it.

Tornado Alley in the USA covers no less then eight states and maybe as many as ten depending on what you do or don't count. Tornadoes are capricious and totally beyond prediction. Are you going to vacate 8-10 states in the heart of the USA's farm belt just because bad things happen there?

Let's face it - the Earth is host to myriads of disasters. Let's move someplace else.

Colin, you may say things like you do to inflame people, but when you do, it only proves that you have no friggin' sense of propriety. I will not yield on this issue, either. People live where they live because it is HOME. Everyone has to live somewhere, and to take whole areas out of play causes overcrowding that leads to its own class of personal disasters. Like riots. Forcing people to live too close together might cause violent conflicts - like happened in Northern Ireland, do you think?

Colin, bad stuff happens EVERYWHERE. What makes us Men and not mice is how we react to that bad stuff when it happens where we are.

Actually London wasn't the only region to suffer in this country, it was brought into the country by rats returning on ships from far flung shores such as The Americas:p

I am afraid The Americas had nothing to do with the Black Death. The Black Death was (i think) around 1348 while Christopher Columbus didn't cross the Atlantic until 1492.

I stand by what I said about the original poster. The reference to the Americas was just another attempt to attack the USA. That really does not really seem to matter, however, since you have gone out of your way to prove my point for me.

Despite the fact that I listed only cities in the USA, and you pointed that "Americas" referred to places beyone the USA, it is clear that none of those other places was mentioned either.

Or perhaps it is evidence of why certain little boys (nationalities aside) seem to need to make themselves feel like "big men" by making fun of people that they do not know, and viewing people as profiled groups instead of individuals. Too bad they cannot seem to grow up.

By the way, calling them "little boys" does not necessarily refer to their age.

Choose the words that you like. You did make reference to "the Americas", which you pointed out, not only included the USA, but other countries in the region as well. Since none of those places was mentioned in the article that you referred to, then it is you who were incorrect in your statement, not me.

I cited it only as an example

from far flung shores such as The Americas

however having said that there is a mistake in the article (but then being American it's understandable) they forgot to put the prefix NEW in front of Amsterdam

In 1665/66, New York and Philadelpia wouldn't have been much more than hamlets. Hardly an ideal starting place for the Great Plague.

It was my understanding that the Plagues that decimated Europe starting in the East (Asia and Asia Minor) and spread through Europe from there, primarily through the port of Constantinople (Istanbul).

On the other hand, there is some evidence to suggest venerial diseases were brought to Europe from the Americas. The disadvantage of our being such a loving people. :D
