View Full Version : I'm on at last
Brianwarnock 09-28-2009, 07:25 AM What a pain this site has become, it took me almost 2 hours to get my reply to Duncanm accepted and then it crashed again, now over 2 hours later I am on again after much trying. If I hadn't been doing other things on my computer I would have given up long ago.
Fed up Brian
Kryst51 09-28-2009, 07:26 AM I agree. It was really slow, and crashing a lot this morning, it seems like it's like that every morning now.
georgedwilkinson 09-28-2009, 07:59 AM It's still very slow for me.
Banana 09-28-2009, 08:01 AM Indeed, I can certainly observe the site crashing (sometime multiple times) and going slow on weekdays mornings.
I fear this will not be fixed until the absentee administrator (or possibly only the site owner) deign to visit here.
Fifty2One 09-28-2009, 09:08 AM Just use patience or find another MS Access place if you need answers or to discuss important issues. More over in the world today people are pressed for time and unfortunately slow service will fall into disuse if there is similar service offered elsewhere at a consistant and better speed.
oumahexi 10-01-2009, 06:36 AM Dito Brian! It's been very frustrating over the past few weeks, I keep getting chucked out mid sentence! Ah well, at least I had nothing important to say at the WC, all my input was to be directed at Access related threads
Brianwarnock 10-01-2009, 06:49 AM Over the last few days I've found it so difficult that I'm making errors due to frustration with typing things for the umpttenth time, and then not getting back in to check and correct
Brian
oumahexi 10-01-2009, 06:57 AM It's not a popularity thing, I've seen there being less than 100 users on line and I still can't get in. I've contacted Jon about it a few weeks ago, but haven't had a reply, I'll contact him again I think. I did get a response from him once when the site was down and he contacted me to say it was up and running again. I'm sure he's busy with other things and it's not that he just doesn't care about the site anymore.
namliam 10-01-2009, 07:08 AM There has to be some central cause, right now the forum is just BLAZING fast....
Everyday about the same time, performance drops... and rougly same time it comes back
There must be some commonality.... i.e. Something basic like a Virus scan starting? Or some automated job running?
Much IO, either on this site or on a shared site?
Just a lot of IO on the server (inside the company)
Something like that...

It looks the site is hosted in California. Link (http://whois.domaintools.com/access-programmers.co.uk) so they are probably running some kind of maintenance as it will be 3AM'ish PDT on the server.
I've tried to host British clients on US servers before and come unstuck because maintenance times clash with peak times for the client.
georgedwilkinson 10-01-2009, 12:07 PM These performance issues are taking place in the morning in the US. If it is a maintenance window issue, they're doing it later in the morning, California time. I was "trying" to read/respond to some posts on the forum this morning about 7:30 AM PST and literally had to walk away for over a minute between clicks. Similar issue every morning for the last couple of weeks.
Based on what I can tell about traffic on this site, my guess is that 8:00 PM PST would be a good time to do maintenance. The US users are busy with their families and getting settled in for the evening and the UK/European users are busy snoozing. The only people posting around that time are students trying to get people to do their homework.
georgedwilkinson 10-01-2009, 12:12 PM Addendum:
There is also the issue of the massively long posting time. I don't even wait for my posts to display anymore...I just hit the back button almost as soon as I've hit "Post Quick Reply".
Is anyone else having that problem?
Fifty2One 10-01-2009, 12:24 PM Yes in the morning (for me it is morning) I do not frequent this site due to the long time to sign in, post, search or anything which is above and beyond just looking at posts. I guess time of day was not considered in the parameters when a service host was selected...
I had similar problems of time of day with our inhouse server manitenance when our service technician scheduled automatic backup and maintenance at 11:00 local time. His reasoning was "So he could monitor the server to see if there was any troubles"... he is now working "evening shift".
Vassago 10-01-2009, 01:06 PM I was having problems in the mid-afternoon here in EST two days ago. It doesn't sound like a maintenance issue.
namliam 10-02-2009, 12:52 AM EST, PST, you folks just assume everyone understands that... I think its better to relate to GMT or UTC... to which everyone can relate...
All of the actions posting (quick or normal), opening posts, searching posts etc... seem to be affected.
The times I notice are roughly 10:00 UTC - 14:00 UTC when things slow to a crawl.
Brianwarnock 10-02-2009, 01:29 AM My times tie in with Namlian 11:00 - 15:00 , we are 1 hour behind him, and I think this would tie in with 3 am california.
Brian
Kryst51 10-02-2009, 06:06 AM Better this morning :D
namliam 10-07-2009, 12:23 AM Baaaaaaaad yesterday :( could hardly get on if at all :(
namliam 10-07-2009, 07:48 AM It was awful getting on just NOW, opening posts even... awfull... but then all of a sudden seconds/minutes later its flying again?
I noticed that between me comming onto the forum and actually finaly getting the "new" posts the posts I had not read yet had also been marked as read... while obviously as a fact, I know I didnt read them... Could this have something to do with it?
Is maybe the history simply grown beyond what it can handle or something?
Possibly an index or somethign that needs re-indexing?
Banana 10-07-2009, 08:31 AM namliam-
When you cilck the VNP link, it immediately submits and the server definitely will record that you've clicked this link but takes its sweet time in creating the outputs that by then you manage to get it, it's thought to be 'old' by then just as if you've clicked VNP and walked from the computer for 15 minutes and return to it & refresh the page. Same principle with submitting a post. As soon as you click 'Post Quick Reply', it's already submitted and recorded in a blink of time even if it takes forever for it to read back the updated threads.
My experience has been that any kind of submittals is always received and never lost. It's the receiving part that can be problematic.
KenHigg 10-07-2009, 08:37 AM Jon is aware of the issue and is doing all he can :)
Does seem to be working faster today...
ColinEssex 10-07-2009, 09:24 AM It does seem to slow a bit when the Americans log in. It seems ok up to lunchtime here.
Col
KenHigg 10-07-2009, 09:34 AM It's always been a bit slow in the morning here but would usually speed up within an hour or so...
georgedwilkinson 10-07-2009, 01:40 PM The site has been incredibly slow all day today (since around noon GMT). At times, it has just NOT worked at all.
namliam 10-19-2009, 03:33 AM 12:30 UTC (13:30 NL)
After B*tching much about the perfomance at this moment its normaly pretty bad... While right now it seems to be flying along quite nicely
DCrake 10-19-2009, 03:48 AM Hey by this time I am normally getting all sorts of errors, keep your mouth shut, maybe someone has actually done something at last.
David
Maybe the Americans have a public holiday today
namliam 10-19-2009, 04:07 AM While right now it seems to be flying along quite nicely
This is what I am saying right?? It is good today? or?? must be my mind.... going crazy...
Unless you are saying I shouldnt say it is going good, in case I Jynx it... or something...
I just wanted to "mark the ocation" just in case that any is working on it that eventhough we are moaning about things beeing bad, it doesnt go unnoticed when things change for the better
>> Lets hope its a change on not a "happy coincedence" of some kind?
Kryst51 10-19-2009, 04:16 AM This whole weekend has seemed pretty good, I think.
Brianwarnock 10-19-2009, 05:32 AM I agree with Namliam , it seems great today so if this is the result of smebody's efforts then lets give credit and say well done.
Brian
Banana 10-19-2009, 05:45 AM Agreed. Thanks to whoever did it.
Here's hoping it'll stick.
georgedwilkinson 10-19-2009, 05:50 AM Oh yeah...this is the way the forums should work. I haven't gotten results this good for months. Now I can post and actually see the post come up.
