Hello. (Vista Home Premium)

I can't close Windows Media Player from the notification area - it doesn't
give me the option to. Nor does it appear in any Startup list.

Can I prevent it from starting up without un-installing it?

you mean it starts when you boot the computer? if that's what youre talking about, check the startup folder if you havent, then check the config menu and uncheck the box under either startup or services. that might work

I unchecked it from msconfig, services but the icon still appears in the notification area.
I'll ignore it and assume it's not using resources.
I also unchecked Application Experience. I've never subscribed to this service, so it shouldn't be running anyway! Do you ever get the impression that you're not in charge of your computer? Andy.

If it in the notifications area simply right click the start bar and under notification area click customize and set to always hide (or indeed restore defaults).

Not sure why it would appear there though unless you meant the quick launch bar (on the left hand side)?

TBH if you hid it it should be a problem but if you must have you right clicked on the icon and checked any options (can't myself as I'm running Win7).

Other things to the are check under C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and in the same folder under all users, anything related to media player ? if so delete it.

Try those if they don't work we'll tackle a registry hack. ;)

Mind you if you've unchecked in msconfig I'm surprised that didn't work.

I'll leave it. It's not a major problem, just a little annoying that MS seems to insist that it appears. Andy.

well
go to run- type msconfig
go under startup tab and see if there is any entry with the name "wmplayer.exe"
if it is , remove it

else , press ctrl+alt+del
and go to processes tab
close wmplayer.exe
