View Full Version : Why oh why oh why - the date
mcclunyboy 04-09-2010, 03:57 AM Why is it in American format?
Why Oh Why Oh Why - its all around the wrong way....
LOL switch it round proper I say...:p:p
The_Doc_Man 04-09-2010, 04:16 AM But you can do so very easily. In Access, the "Short Date" and other named date formats depend on the Windows date format chosen under path Start >> Settings >> Regional Settings (or something like that.)
Are you running your entire system with the "wrong" date format? Don't forget, Bill Gates is a USA citizen, so OF COURSE his products are going to reflect his USA prejudices. Or were you referring to dates on this forum?
mcclunyboy 04-09-2010, 04:46 AM no no....i mean the dates each post was posted is in american format 04.09.2010 not 09.04.2010 the way it should be :P

I'm guessing it's the date stamp in the top left hand corner of each post.
Now if you can't get your head around that
GalaxiomAtHome 04-09-2010, 05:33 AM I agree. Why doesn't the site use the computer's date format?

Might be a little outside capabilities there.
Maybe there's a mod that will allow a user to choose like they would a timezone.
pbaldy 04-09-2010, 10:16 AM No, I think it's perfect just the way it is. :p

Oh c'mon you know Americans can't cope with anything that isn't Americanised.

Galaxiom 04-11-2010, 03:26 PM Using either long date format would be fine since it is unambiguous.
Using a Short US format is ambiguous. I didn't realise at first as I expected a UK site to use dd/mm/yyyy. At that particular time of the month it was not obvious. No clue is provided by the current date since recent dates are expressed as Today and Yesterday.
ChrisO 04-11-2010, 08:04 PM Yes, both Today and Yesterday are meaningless so why not just put the date and time?
Galaxiom 04-11-2010, 08:19 PM Today and Yesterday work for me. They correspond to my time setting. I have seen them change at midnight more often than I probably should.:(
ChrisO 04-11-2010, 08:54 PM Maybe for all those people that live GMT+ we should also have a Tomorrow.
Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow; sounds like a catchy title for a movie. ;)
Galaxiom 04-11-2010, 09:02 PM Maybe for all those people that live GMT+ we should also have a Tomorrow.
Not at all. The dates including Today and Yesterday display correctly based on the time zone in the User CP.
I really don't think it could be too hard to have the date format also set in User CP.
ChrisO 04-11-2010, 09:11 PM Ah, but try coming in of an email or Google when not logged in. :D
Screen shot attached…
Galaxiom 04-11-2010, 09:23 PM Point taken. I am always logged in. The date and time should display and indicate GMT only for visitors while logged in users get their preference honoured.
Would be nice if the page did get the date and time settings from the computer but then I expect the howl about running scripts would be deafening.
ChrisO 04-11-2010, 09:36 PM Yep, CP won’t cut it; we also have to consider the people in the Chatham Islands. ;)
All jocks(sic) aside, I would prefer GMT (no daylight saving) and let people create an offset.
Sometimes these sites shift around on server local daylight saving time and people have to chase them.

Right, this is a standard option in Vbulletin that covers the whole forum. What I am wondering is if there is a mod out there that allows a user to choose their own format that would override the default option for the forum.
