JamesMcS 05-19-2010, 03:29 AM God, I'm so unhip....
I keep seeing this word on t'interweb, is it just a poor spelling of trawling that's stuck? Or does it mean something else to the kids of today??
google is your friend: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Internet) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Internet))
JR :-)
JamesMcS 05-19-2010, 03:42 AM Ah I see, an a**hole
But the plentyoffish ad on the site mentions trolling supermarkets for a partner - I can't see that pulling anyone any time soon!

The most likely derivation of the word troll can be found in the phrase "trolling for newbies", popularized in the early 1990s in the Usenet group, alt.folklore.urban (AFU).[8] (http://www.access-programmers.co.uk/forums/#cite_note-Porter-7)[9] (http://www.access-programmers.co.uk/forums/#cite_note-GoogleUsenet-8) Commonly, what is meant is a relatively gentle inside joke by veteran users, presenting questions or topics that had been so overdone that only a new user would respond to them earnestly. For example, a veteran of the group might make a post on the common misconception that glass flows over time (http://www.access-programmers.co.uk/wiki/Glass#Behavior_of_antique_glass). Long-time readers would both recognize the poster's name and know that the topic had been done to death already, but new subscribers to the group would not realize, and would thus respond.
How about this one :p

JamesMcS 05-19-2010, 04:08 AM Hmm, clear as muddy mud. I guess plentyoffish just made a typo.....
And thanks to babel fish for the comprehensive translation of "what"
olper 05-19-2010, 05:11 AM lol, is this real joke here? :D
JamesMcS 05-19-2010, 05:19 AM Nope, I never heard of trolling before I came here. Does that make me uncool? Have I been pwned?? (Another new one - what's wrong with bloody English that's what I say)
Pauldohert 05-19-2010, 05:52 AM Whats pwned then?
JamesMcS 05-19-2010, 05:53 AM There's a wikipedia page.... "fascinating"

I think I can safely erase pwned from the memory banks then, along with anything else an online Vicky Pollard may say.
Trolling in the supermarket is a little confusing, in Tesco I always point out loudly the chickens with the filed off knees. Maybe thats trolling or maybe thats pointing out the chicken, thats collapsed in its own excrement before, being killed, tarted up (filed) and put on the shelf.
JamesMcS 05-19-2010, 06:16 AM That's what I thought when trolling was first explained to me! You've seen the plentyoffish ad yeah? I doubt chicken trolling (although that does sound like specialist porn) is going to get you any skirt. Unless it's a eco-chicken activist of some sort.... takes all types like
Pauldohert 05-19-2010, 06:20 AM Seen the ad, non the wiser.
An eco chicken activist? My local Tesco is full of students - you should see the dilema they face - over buying the badly treated chicken - or buying the more expensive one - and spending the money budgeted for a Wednesday afternoon beer.
JamesMcS 05-19-2010, 06:23 AM Unlucky you bud. When I see the ad again (I haven't since I started this thread) I'll let you know.... I bet they've changed it now I mentioned it
And chickens all the way, beer a close second I say
The_Doc_Man 05-20-2010, 09:48 AM As a resident of South Louisiana who a long time ago went fishing with my father, I can define the ORIGINAL meaning of "trolling."
You take a really low-powered outboard motor that is enough to overcome a light current that might make you drift, but it isn't big enough to start a big ruckus in the water. Don't want to disturb the fish, you know!
Then you drop a line in the water and see what nibbles. You hope that the bait is good enough to attract your favorite fish. The fact that it is moving slowly against the current gives the illusion that it is moving under its own power.
Of course, from the fish viewpoint (Internet OR aquatic), nothing bad happens to you until you open your big mouth and nibble on the bait.
Combine THIS meaning with the mythological reference to "troll" - a creature who lurks under dark spots under bridges and waylays unwary travelers - and you have the perfect definition of a troll in the Internet sense.

I thought your fishing scenario described above was "trawling"? not "trolling"
The_Doc_Man 05-20-2010, 09:53 AM Trawing is done with a net. Trolling (aquatic) is done with a rod and reel.
Banana 05-20-2010, 09:53 AM I also thought trolling used nets.
EDIT: Saw the_doc_man's reply. Odd - I was sure I saw nets being referenced before but maybe it's just one of those terms that get misused/misapplied. Not being inclined to go and fish (I do catch fish - at marketplace ;) ) I wouldn't have known better.
The_Doc_Man 05-20-2010, 09:56 AM I've never used a net in conjunction with trolling except after the fish was hooked. Then it was a 'pick up' net used to capture a really active fish. When they are out of the water but not yet in the boat, that is the time of greatest probability that they can spit out the hook.
Kryst51 05-20-2010, 09:57 AM I see! Thanks for the information, I certainly understand better now.
Vassago 05-20-2010, 10:08 AM And here I thought Trolling was a Lord of the Rings reference or something... :p

Don't hurt yourself thinking too much Bilbo!

...my precious... the thinking... it burns us, it does...
Banana 05-20-2010, 10:13 AM I think I'll prefer hobbits stewed.
The_Doc_Man 05-21-2010, 09:59 AM During a Hobbiton party, the dandelion wine and fermented apple cider and ale can get the hobbits quite well stewed. They are the original party-hearty animals, after all...

And a little bit of Shire pipe-weed to top off the evening. :D
