I am shortly needing to import data from a 'Works' file. I have seen that it's not an obvious option on the buttons. Am I going to be able to do this easily?

Never used Works, but is there an option in it to export the data to a format that can be recognised by Access, such as Txt,csv, xls.

That's reassuring, thanks. I think I'll stop worrying about it until I have to actually transfer the (large amount of) data

Are you actually migrating a legacy system over to Access from Works?

Just the data. I have written a new database for the job that it does. Some of the fields won't be needed but I shall bring all the data in and then sort it out in Access. I haven't written a db for about 5 years so I'm pretty rusty!!

It is to run the membership for a charity organisation, the Plantation Garden in Norwich, England. If you're ever that way, do go look. It's special. Am I allowed a link to it?

Have you managed to migrate the data yet?

Not for real. I did find an old file of my '96 accounts in Works. It was very easy to open it in Works 6 (I think) 'Save As' an Excel file and then import it into Access so I'm very optimistic about being able to do it for real. I'm waiting for my customer (unpaid of course, this is a charity!!) to finalise the details of what is wanted.

I have to say that my MkI database was received with great enthusiasm.

I finally got my hands on the actual data to migrate into my new database. Yes, I should really have seen it before I wrote the new database, but I am short of time in the UK, and keen!!

It wasn't in a Works spreadsheet as had been suggested, it was a Works database.

It didn't want to 'go' as a dBase and the only other suggestions were text and comma or text and tab, so I simply highlit the whole lot and pasted it into Excel. It was easy to import it into Access from there.

I was pleased with the Access problem reporting. It gave me a list of all the records that had problems so I could identify them very easily.

Now the fun has begun!! There is text and question marks in fields that should be currency. Date formats are all over the place, etc etc.

There are columns for each years subscriptions, I'll soon change that, and for now I've added an oddsands*ds field (not the real field name) until I get things straight.

Thank you for all help on this forum site so far. I just know that I shall be back, probably very soon.
