all,

Would it be possible for me to connect to one computer that is connected to the same router as my client computer? What I want to do is use my one router that I have as a substitute for a LAN. I know that really can't be done technically, but I really want to work on, and modify files that are on my home machine in my living room, from my little netbook. Ideally I would be in my basement working on files that are located on my desktop upstairs.

Is this sort of thing possible? Both machines would be connected to the same router, and according to the ISP, they do not recycle IPs at all, so the address would never change.

I have limited amount of knowledge about DOS, but I do understand how to connect to an IP, ping them, FTP concepts, etc...

Any help from the DOS experts here would certainly be appreicated!

I'm not hot on networks but afaik, most modern routers will do the job of a LAN - at least that's my experience. So you should have no problem sharing files/folders between computers connected to the same router.

For Windows, all you need to do is select folders to share from one computer. Then you will be able to see those folders on the network from the other computer. See here (http://www.lostintechnology.com/how-to/how-to-share-a-folder-over-a-network).

Addressing is handled locally by the router so the ISP address is irrelevant.

Sorry, I just realised that it is specifically DOS that you were asking about. So I don't know if my response will be as helpful to you. Do you really mean DOS?

yes i do, as that is the only way that I know how to communicate two machines. What other ways are there, outside of third party software?

and yeah, I'm not even sure how to setup my file sharing. I have vista, and I haven't managed this sort of thing on this OS before. hints?

nevermind, your link does that job. (look before you leap, net)

sorry Stopher! I was making this so incredibly difficult. I don't know what I was thinking. I simply set up an ad-hoc and file sharing between the two machines and it works fine.

I would however, like to know how I could access my remote machine at home through DOS or some other medium while I'm at a restaurant or something, without using Gotomypc or something else Like that.

Doesn't it depend on the firewall settings of the client network?
