View Full Version : The superbowl
AnthonyGerrard 02-08-2011, 06:44 AM This was hyped up this year over here in the UK - because the BBC had it, along side their other offerings of lower league football, and bowls.
I watched the build up and went to bed - 11.30 pm ish start for the match on a school night is no good for me.
But 110 million or something (a record) watched it in the states.
How many watch for the game and how many tune in for Christina or the Black Eyed Peas, as the entertainment is second to none?, sports event wise.
I thought Christina sang her heart out.
200$ to watch it outside the stadium on big screen, minimum of 4 tickets! Wowee.
A differant world.
the_net_2.0 02-08-2011, 07:26 AM in my town, I know absolutely noone that doesn't watch it for the commercials. that's the only thing that matters. as a matter of fact, I ran across this one just the other day:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRMMBXx3kqk
I always thought the superbowl was just a giant pie dish:eek:
Davep 02-08-2011, 01:29 PM Who was that awful blonde woman singing that awful song at the beginning? I saw her and switched over, it sounded like a cat being tortured, never heard such a row.
Is the superbowl the "world series" with only two countries? or am I getting confused with the netball fiasco that occurs in America.

No sir. The Super Bowl is not a "world series". It is merely mock war between two groups of overpaid performers whose job is to attempt to inflict injury and stage subpar dances while chasing an ovoid ball around a field. No, wait. That's rugby. Never mind.
ChipperT 02-08-2011, 01:35 PM Oh, and that awful blonde woman was Christina Agulleria and I have no idea what the awful song was. Usually someone attempts to sing the National Anthem of the United States in that particular time slot, but I am sure that is not what she was singing. At least, I hope that is not what she was singing.
The_Doc_Man 02-08-2011, 07:47 PM Sorry, ChipperT, but Christina was, indeed, singing the USA National Anthem. I recognized most of the lyrics though her idea of the melody eluded me.
Black-Eyed Peas performed but they weren't so great.
For me it is the commercials. The mini-Darth Vader with the remote-start car was great. I liked the one where the idiot teased the pug with Doritos. He got what he deserved. I also liked the jungle beetle that turned into a VW beetle. Clever.
There was one that looked kind of like a World of Warcraft setup where the besieged fort saw a dragon coming. So they catapulted a bottle of Coca-Cola. The dragon drank the cola and turned on his masters. The description sounds lame, I know, but it was cute.
In the past, I've found some commercials that were so good I almost fell down ROTF LMAO PIMP. For instance, from some years ago, the Nissan ad with the pigeons taking out freshly washed cars - until the Nissan came along. It was so nimble on curves that it avoided wave after wave of pigeons. Finally, the wing commander sets his sights on the Nissan, which makes it to the safety of the garage just in time. You hear this loud "thunk" noise. You see a bird's beak sticking through the garage door. And you hear a strained voice call out "Medic!"

I'm afraid I don't know either of them. The bottle blonde looked and sounded a mess and I wouldn't know the US nat anthem anyway.
Still, if that's what Yanks like then who am I to argue?
Col
Fifty2One 02-09-2011, 07:38 AM Christina has duffed the American national anthem many time before at sporting events, you would think the organizers would have not taken the chance on her. I think she sounds like a couple of cats fighting in an alley most of the time anyhow.
I was busy so did not catch most of the game but caught some of the commercials online, they really are some very good ones. I had forgotten about the bird one from a number of years back for Nissan, that was really funny.

Steve R. 02-09-2011, 08:00 AM The US economy has degenerated into nothing more than "Bread and Circuses" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bread_and_circuses). The Super Bowl is one example how decadent the US has become.
Like many people, I was shocked at Groupon's Tibetan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXGYK1eP_wo) commercial. But after a few minutes of reflection, it occurred to me, that this ad only took what many existing ads already do to a logical extreme. Groupon has highlighted our marketing hypocrisy. The Washington Post has a really good article: After a bloated Super Bowl in Dallas, it's time to rein in big game (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/02/07/AR2011020705610.html).

Anything is better then this crap "God Save the Queen".

That's true, especially as not many people in the UK believe in a god.
I always get the US national anthem mixed up with the French one. Is the US one the yellow rose of Texas?

The French have a national anthem? I thought they surrendered that as well.
No Col, Yellow Rose of Texas replaced Hail to the Chief while George Bush II was in office. Easy mistake to make though.

Don't knock "God save the Queen". How else can we scots wind up the english by booing it.

I have to be nice to the French - we'll be having French teenage students staying with us this summer.
