Hello all you lovely people.

This wonderful roped off area of the watercooler is going to be reserved for sharing important happenings of our lives.

Once upon a time, I found a place where there lived a great and mighty people. These people were witty, fun, and supportive. These people were friends. These people respected, loved and entertained each other every day and reached out across vast oceans and high mountains to do so.

They had no queen except kindness. They had no king besides humour. It was a lovely, lovely world. And then, they were dispersed. Flung to distant lands and separated from each other. They landed in places called "Bush-Lovers" and "America-Haters", "War-Mongers" and "Arrogant Elitists", "Blinded by Hate" and "Blinded by Passion".

Can it be saved? Will its inhabitants find their way home? And what has been happening to them this past year? Tell us here.

Thanks for asking about my kids, Rich.

Yes, they are getting quite ancient. ;)

My son... I think I posted a pic of him and I a few years ago..... well, he's nearly 6 foot tall now! Of course, he's still gorgeous and quite popular with the girls. He's in all Honors Classes. (That's advanced classes if you're not familiar with the term.) He's in his 3rd year of Orchestra, mastering the cello. He's holding a job, trying out for his High School Basketball Team, and playing in a  "band" <<shakes head>> More on THAT topic later.

My middle girl is a Senior in High School. She's stunningly beautiful and has a personality to match. Well, except when she goes PMS on us. Then, everyone runs for cover! LOL She has a steady boyfriend that she poached from her brother's basketball team years ago. He's a great kid, just like my son... in Honor's Classes, playing trumpet in the Marching Band at school, holding a job. And she is quietly ruining him. ;) More on THAT topic later too.

My oldest is graduated (Class of 2004). She's 20, still a virgin and is DYING to make it impossible for me to claim that anymore. She has no boyfriend, but REALLY wants one. Not necessarily for someone to talk to.... I think she'd be satisfied with a little cutie that could just "help her out" a few times a week. I pity the poor lad she lands. :D

Hey, Tess.

Nice to see that things in your family are going well. I've recently returned to popping in once in a while for general advice on maintaining and improving old DBs.

I have news, too. I got married two and a half months ago, we moved back to New Hampshire from Chicago (but OH how I miss it!) and we're trying to start our own nonprofit business and buy a home.

Anyway, this is just a simple pop in to say hello to anyone I used to chat with who is still around. I missed you at the wedding. ;)

Naw, I'm not wishing for it.. But I DO empathize with her.

I mean... she's 20!!!! And she has been described by people OTHER than her family as "jaw dropping gorgeous"

I didn't make it to 20 as a virgin. I don't know many, if ANY that did. So, I really have no reference of that kind of "deprivation" if you will.

TessB

Obviously she has morals, and obviously she is "waiting". But, what she is waiting for and what you have inferred she possibly should wait for may be different things. Are you saying that a moral person should wait for marriage?

What a great post Tess. It's really good to hear that things are going so well for you. I'm pleased to see that you're trying to get the good atmosphere back that existed here in the cooler once upon a time.

I met up with Lynsey at the weekend and your name came up in our conversation somewhere along the line...all good of course :) She thinks very highly of you. She's a little worse for wear at the moment, was involved in a car crash but she is fine just a little sore, nothing that some alcohol couldn't cure :) Apparantly although she was driving, it was nothing to do with her usual rally driving.......... ;)

Let's try to keep your thread rolling in the right direction and I'll try to think what I've been up to of late......I changed jobs approximately a year ago now and don't really do very much in the line of Access Development any longer, only on an ad-hoc basis which is why my visits to the forum are now less frequent than before. The job I'm in now is more web development and Excel based but I do get to play with Access now and again. It's really going very well, never been happier at work!

As some on the forum already know, I got engaged last August and the wedding is planned for next year. They tell me it's all down hill after that so I've got plenty to look forward to then :p

So you've told us how all your kids are doing, what about an update on how you are doing?

Best wishes
Hay

Let's try to keep your thread rolling in the right direction
Yes, let's. I'll take up the discussion of morality and promiscuity in the Debate thread as I think it's a good topic for interesting debate. However.... LOL it could just as well wind up in the Boxing Ring.... so I may just go ahead and post it there. ;)

So you've told us how all your kids are doing, what about an update on how you are doing?

Yeah... you noticed that huh? Well, after being bought out by the dastardly Carlylse Group aka The Ex-President's Club, the pirates came aboard and ravaged our ship. The whole I.T. department was thrown out on its bum as they outsourced all I.T. matters to Perot Systems. Yes, as in H. Ross Perot. Anyone else see the trend here?
That was over two years ago and since then, I've been consulting. Consulting doesn't pay what it used to. There are no benefits, no time off at all that is paid, but it kept us paying the blls. It was also very difficult personally. When I was consulting, I never quite felt like I was part of a real family. There was a sense of disconnect as each project could end at any time. I picked up a couple of friends during my last assignment.... one or two I can say confidently that will remain in close contact..... of course one was another consultant, like me. But on the whole, I felt quite alienated. This feeling of alienation was compounded by things happening to the world around me. The face of America has been changing and its looking less and less like my own. Patriotism felt after 9/11 has been warped into a mob-like mentality. If I disagree with the war, or express distrust in my own government, I'm no longer an "American". More alienation.
So, that being said, I think it must be clear why when I come back to my longtime friends in cyberspace, where I've always felt accepted, and find it in such a chaotic, ugly state, I reacted the way I did. (And you can also understand how touched I am to know that two birds an ocean away are speaking well of me! :) )

Anyway, after several months of looking for an opportunity for permanent employment, I found a small company that looks like they need me as much as I need them. My last day with JPMorgan as a consultant was Friday. My co-worker bought a card which she had several people sign, and presented it to me with a bottle of Kahlua. I laughed when they all came over to watch me open my going away gift... and told them, "Gee, if you told me you liked me this much and brought me alcohol every once in a while... maybe I wouldn't be leaving!" But no, I still would have left. I was hired for my Access skills, but the job was turning into more of a Project Management job and I was quickly losing my technical skills. I couldn't let that happen.

Tomorrow, I'll be starting as a Report Writer using Actuate... which I have never used. And I'm nervous as hell and hope to god that I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and gosh darnit, that people like me. :D

May I offer some friendly advice which you may be aware of already?

I have the philosophy of never giving your all to an employer. That is to say, always leave a little something in reserve for yourself. What I have found in the past is that the harder you work, the more work they give you. This is fine, as long as you can complete this work with reserves to spare.

I have done this twice in the past. With one job my responsibilities were 123, this grew to 12345789 - indeed to such an extent I couldn't get it all done in the day. I decided to leave because it got to the point where I dreaded getting up in the morning. During the "farewell interview" my official job spec on paper was a fraction of what I actually did but I had agreed to take on each and every one of those additional jobs because they flattered me into accepting them. "You're the man/woman for the job", "No-one else can do it" etc etc..

I'm glad you're happy at your new job - just make sure you keep at least 10% (preferable 99% :p ) capacity free in reserve. ;)

This is a great thread! It's great to see Sara and Ian's pic - you look so happy!

I've been married 2 years now! It's gone sooo quickly. And during that time I've had two motorbike accidents and two operations! Could say that marriage is bad for my health! Not really! Well you knew about the first ones - where I broke my ankle on the honeymoon and had to have it all screwed back together in Cyprus. Then last October (04) I had the screws out thankfully.

Then in June of this year, whilst going to work on my scooter, some lovely driver thought it would be a great idea to see me fly over the bonnet of his car! Cos we're only third party on the insurance, we're still waiting for it all to go through and the scooter is in the garage awaiting repair when we get the insurance money. Who knows when!

After 18 years of being told my back problem is all in my head, I eventually had an MRI several weeks ago and found out that two of my discs are stuffed and that's only the lower back. For some reason they didn't do the upper and neck. Just waiting to see the consultant - was quite a shock!

Apart from all that, Tim and the kids are fab. We still have the kids every other weekend and half the hols and they are growing soooo fast. Tim's just launching a new venture - as a photoshop expert he's launching a great idea of montages in the hope that he can tail off the training eventually (there's some dodgy photographs on there of us - Tim thinks they're fine, but ever critical I say, "why did you have to use that one!" If you want to check it out it's monomontage.com)

We're also doing more wedding photography together and have recently gone digital - we found we work really well together as Tim's better at the technical side and I'm good at the organizing people side so we bounce off each other.

Also, eventually, I hope to be able to learn more about photoshop, and also give up the full-time job to part-time so I can actually try and keep on top of the housework and the photography side of things.

I became an aunty in February for the first time and had the privilege of seeing my beautiful niece Ellie born, being my sister's birthing partner. It really affected me in the sense of "wooooow - that has got to be one of the most amazing experiences ever!"

Started a new job as I mentioned on another thread a few months ago - same overall department, same general people etc, but completely different job - no Access. :( well, very very little - only what I choose to use when downloading and sorted files. But am enjoying it.

Plus to help with the debts etc, I took up Virgin Vie (selling cosmetics and jewellery) about a year ago - I do quite enjoy it, but it does leave me with very little time!

Anyway - that's it. You can wake up now! It's been great to pop back in to the forum for a while.

Yes - thank you. They already offered £545 which I just laughed at. That'd only just cover the cost of the scooter repairs let alone my helmet, lost work for Virgin Vie that I couldn't do, gloves, storage costs and physiotherapy costs for my arm and back which was aggravated by it all! The guy who's at fault has, even now, not filled in his form and this is going back to June! As path of the course, his insurance company tried to query liability, which upset me a lot, but it was because he hadn't filled out his form and they were just trying to look like they were doing something!

Rich
10-17-2005, 02:33 AM
You're one of the few of us Ally who don't know how to screw the system, I suspect that your injuries alone would have kept the "street wise" at home on benefits awaiting a very large settlement.

It is mad. I have been injured - especially my arm - the problem of which wasn't there before, and my back has been aggravated, but I couldn't just sit at home and wait - it would also affect my part-time work and we can't afford not to have that so sometimes I have just have to grin and bear the pain and keep on going! Sorry I gave you such a short answer yesterday. I have been really sick these last few days. I had only 3 hours sleep the night before.

This picture shows several things: Look on the window sill...coffee cup, assorted hand tools, tape measure, toilet paper (?). Up in the corner we see an exhaust fan, maybe. This picture shows several things: Look on the window sill...coffee cup,
I've now removed it to the dishwasher

assorted hand tools,
I have to appear keen, even if they're all blunt

tape measure
yes but I don't use it as a rule, everthing's done by eye 'cause I figure that's what I'm going to use to look at it with afterwards

toilet paper (?).
To mop my furrowed brow

Up in the corner we see an exhaust fan
the remnant of an old water heater

, Rich, are you going to cover the masonry work with TP?
No, TCP after banging my head against it, that's all that'll stick.
It's almost the same as the wall here that I keep banging against :D

Hi Lyns - great to see you again! Sorry to hear about your crash. Hope it's all getting sorted out and you're not suffering from it.

What's that about a B&B Tess!? Have I missed something?

TessB
10-27-2005, 05:12 AM
The B&B is simply an option we have since we bought some land (2.74 acres) in Stone Mountain, Georgia, close to Stone Mountain Park. It is large enough and zoned appropriately to build a B&B on the property as well as an owner's residence. It's something we've thought about doing after we get tired of working for other people's companies.

I'm sure it is an amazing amount of work though... but it sounds so simple. We've joked about it being the only B&B to encourage late nights and sleeping through breakfast. Maybe ours will be a Bed and Brunch.... lol so we wouldn't have to get up so early. I'll leave muffins out for the early morning risers, but if they want pancakes, they'll have to wait until 11, when god intended people on vacation to awaken. :)

But whatever we do, it won't be any time soon. We still have kids in high school and we won't make them change schools at this point. That's not nice.

I told my dad that we'd probably not do anything until the kids finish their pre-paid college educations in Florida. He said, "By then, Josh may go with you, but the girls could be married with husbands of their own!" I said, "Well, fine, they'll still move with us." He thought about it a bit and said, "Well, Aimee's husband may put up a fight, but Alyssa's will have no choice." LOL (She's the boss, see?)

Ah.... well the property is on Rockbridge Rd!
And if you are only 15 minutes from Stone Mountain, may I suggest you find "Bundos" which is a small restaurant near the Stone Mountain Villiage. It is out of this world for Italian food. The owners, Carmen and Tony (not married, just partners) are the waiters and Carmen is also the main chef.

Try it, seriously! Let me know what you think. I wrote a review on it on epinions.com too. I was THAT impressed.

By the way, did I happen to see you at the Yellow Daisy Festival this year????

:p

KenHigg
10-27-2005, 05:47 AM
Will do. We used to go to the laser shows. It's closer to work than from home. We live on the other side of Atlanta so it'd be close to a 45 minute to an hour drive from home... :(

How'd you end up with a place in Stn. Mtn? Weren't they going to outsource the upkeep, etc. to a private firm for the park?

Rich
10-27-2005, 05:58 AM
We used to go to the laser shows.
Why didn't you ride the Ducks? you chicken :p

TessB
10-27-2005, 06:23 AM
I rode the duck!
Driver scared the crap out of me when he charged into the water. He asked everyone.... "Do you want to go into the water fast or slow?" I thought he was joking. Everyone said "Fast!" I'm thinking, he's going to ease this baby in.... he'll not just ...... OH CRAP!!!!!
I screamed.... my husband laughed his ass off. And then I did too.

We ended up there one year because of a fluke! We were running from Hurricane Ivan and ended up in a crappy motel. My sister, whom I called to say I was fine, asked where I was. I was a town over from Stone Mountain. She had been to the park several times and suggested it as THE place to stay. And, that weekend, the Yellow Daisy Festival was going on....we fell in love with the place... and the rest is history.

TessB

Yes, Lyns.... the Atlanta Georgia trip would be what you want to look for.
Never heard of Tbilisi, Georgia... but, is this the Georgia where Bush had some security issues upon his visit? (But he wasn't aware of them until AFTER he left.)
Stone Mountain is in the Atlanta area.

My friend is quitting his job in January to go to the States, hire a van, and do a road trip. Where will he begin? Where does he intend to visit? How long will he be discovering our land? You must tell him not to miss the Blue Ridge Parkway... especially the lower portion in the North Carolina. Gorgeous! (If you like mountains and waterfalls, that is!)

Mile-O

Never heard of Tbilisi, Georgia...

Tblisi is the capital city of the nation of Georgia, a small Soviet country on the Black Sea next Azerbaijan and Armenia. Not too far off Turkey, also. It's very cheap there but it has high levels of crime to due the remnants of Soviet mafia having a high profile here. It's not somewhere you would want to go on holiday to.

There's an Athens in the US Georgia too. It must be so confusing. :p

I have no idea what he intends to do. As for the NC Blue Ridge Parkway; I don't think they are doing the road trip for the scenery. ;)

Speaking of cats, I was reading the metro (a free paper) this morning on my way to work, and landed up in a state on the train cos i was so upset at one article!

... a 4 month old kitten had been tortured by someone or a group , tied up and thrown on a bonfire ... only after they had let off a firework in his face first. A dog walker found him crying a bit later on and took him to a vet, he survived but they showed a pic of him and his wee face and body was all damaged and burned...

awww i'm away again ... if this is what they were doing for fun, i cant even imagine what they would do if thy were in a bad mood.  :( :( :(

People are rushing out of offices to pick their kids out of school to home.A rally has been called in the middle of the city as the police that has been recently filled with uneducated Militia in preparation for next elections (in 4 months time) prepares tear gas cannisters to polute the atmosphere. I read somewhere that David Beckham is looking to earn £750,000 per week  and most other players in the top teams are on £80,000 to £100,000 per week, how can that be justified? surely its the fans that have to foot the bill by paying huge prices for tickets.

Don't know about Man u or chelsea but a Rangers season ticket costs between £340 - £560 depending on the area of the stadium you are seated. This is for home league games only and they usually throw in a a CIS cup game. It isn't too bad really.

Gosh, £500 seems alot to me. I appreciate that true fans are a hardy lot but surely there must be some rising swell of resentment at the costs. Then there's the on-costs, like the meat pie or cuppa tea at half time. Plus travel expenses to away games.

But then again, if someone collects things as a hobby, they'd probobly pay £200 to get a good example of something - horses for courses really.

Its just a shame that neanderthals like Wayne Rooney et al are on such huge salaries. If I was a keen fan like you Hales, I'd pay up but resent it ;)

Perhaps it needs the fans to make a stand and refuse to pay, that'll get the Finance Director a sleepless night or two :D

I don't usually miss the money as it's paid in advance at the start of each season so going to the game itself then becomes less expensive as the ticket is already paid but there is always the extra for cup games and away games, I have cut down on the away games though. I know for a fact it's a lot more in the Premiership as the most expensive ticket in the scottish league is obviously the big one, Rangers v Celtic, ticket price for saturdays game at their ground is £33 and increases slightly each year. I went to Arsenal v Newcastle at Highbury in Jan and the ticket price was around £40 odd, can't remember the exact price now.

Anyway Tess, please accept my apologies for turning your lovely thread into a footy conversation...... :o

Ok, so it has been a really long time since I posted anything here - I was pregnant all last year, which is a good enough excuse. So if I read this thread correctly, I should be letting everyone know about important events in my life. Well, my pregnancy ended with the birth of my daughter (as well it should!!) and I have posted a nice little picture of her as of last Thursday, when she was 12 weeks old. She's my first, probably my only, and considering that I have spent most of my life as a single and carefree individual, having a baby has been quite a challenge for me. But so far she is so worth it. So here you go, folks - my sweet Poopa.

Actually, her name is spelled Haley, but is pronounced like Hayley's name. She was named for my maternal grandmother, who's maiden name was Haley (or maybe spelled Healy, but pronounced Haley), and her middle name is Morgan, which is my mother's maiden name. So she is the girl with 3 last names. My relatives on my mom's side think it's a fabulous name, and are probably jealous that they didn't think of it first....

If you'd asked me 6 weeks ago, I would have told you there was no way I would have another one, but I am considering it now. She should have a sibling if possible, but we got a very late start - I'm 42, my boyfirend is 46 - because she was essentially unplanned. Hayley is more of a common name these days. I have seen it spelt Haley as well. All too often on xmas cards etc I've had Haley or Hailey, not sure if the spelling with the "i" is a proper spelling or not. My mum was a big fan of Hayley Mills who I was named after. I much prefer my name to "Susie" though which is what I was going to be called

We got a bit of a late start as well, both of us are 35 now. But I didn't want to get pregnant until I finished school myself, which I did in 2002. My husband just finished his degree this year, so we are in a better position to have another one (or two) but we need to get on the ball.

They all do! Even the confirmed virgin.
As soon as we heard the middle one needed protection... they ALL got condoms from us.

I asked my son if he would let me know if he lost his virginity... he said, "Not immediately... maybe I'd tell you after 6 months...." So, now I ask, "In 6 months, will you tell me you are still a virgin?" LOL

So... anyway, at least I have a 6 month head start in providing him with protection.

Yep - roughly a year, because for the first 2 months after delivery, you are recovering from pregnancy. THEN you can start enjoying the baby.

Friday afternoon, my 17 year old son got his operator's license. 26 hours later, he totalled his car. He pulled out in front of a truck.
The truck swerved in attempt to avoid him, but smashed into his driver's side front wheel, which spun Josh around. The truck then proceeded to crash through a fenced yard and into the bedroom of a nearby house.

Thank god he is alive.
No one else was hurt.

What a scary time for a parent.... driving licenses.... inexperience..... <<shudder>>

Hi Tess,

We all hope for a speedy recovery for Josh - we're with him on this.;)

Having been the victim of a (minor) motorcycle accident recently (hit by car) I know a little of the trauma these things cause.

Tess:

Glad to hear he is OK. Maybe he should wait until he is 18 to try driving again after completing some more driving courses. My 18 year old has already had 2wrecks. 16 and 17 year old children do not need to be behind the wheel until they have completed an extensive driver's traing program. I'm testament to that as well. I had 2 or 3 before I turned 18.

Sorry the hear it - Glad everyone is ok...

I guess the age limit is a good rule but in my opinion some young people are ready to start driving at 16. My nephew just started and he is a better driver than most adults I've been with. I'm not sure why some kids are ready before others...

And we all make mistakes.

My 36 year old daughter had her car written off on Thursday, it was a low speed shunt but the angle she caught the other car at destoyed her suspension and made repair uneconomic. She had let the other guy out of a side road, he turned left at the next but had to do an emergency stop, she didn't make it.

Glad everybody is OK Tess.

Glad everyone is okay. Thats the most important thing.

However a wonderful lesson has been learnt. "I can happen to me"

The rest is just a bit of damage that money can repair. The lesson is however a life long one.

Not being smart or anything like that but until the first shunt there is no lesson learnt

Happened to me
my Lad
my Daughter.
Fortunately every time the damage was to cars and not people so pleased nobody was hurt and result is a much better driver
