View Full Version : When Col comes back

I guess he's taken a GWB-type vacation. I've no idea when he'll be back. (When his motorbike runs out of petrol?) It's been weeks!!!!

Hey, let's decorate this room with all sorts of fun things and turn out the lights. When Col comes back, he'll definitely wander in here wondering what's up. Then we can all jump out at him and yell surprise!

:D

Col is currently holed up in the Studios in Bermuda working on his seminal CD, provisionally entitled "Away from the Watercooler". Eric has just finished putting some guitar fills on and I'm booked to play bass there next week as Macca couldn't make it. Ron Wood is coming over too so we can finish it all off. Linda Ronstadt has been hassling us to let her and Emmylou do the backing vocals so they may turn up too. Should be quite a party.

We're hoping the recent controversy on this forum won't affect the cd sales in the US too much. Fortunately his American fan base is pretty loyal. :D

I've been wondering where he's been! I thought he was gone forever and was sad.

I will definitely buy the album.

Especially if I can sing backup too.

I can also play tambourine or maracas.

(Thought I may not be able to spell either...)

Bring your bikini, it might be good to have backup in case Emmylou and Linda don't show :)

Not to be morbid, but the thought occurred to me that Col may have had a run of ill health. Not that any of the joking has been ill-willed, but it seems to me that unless we have real info regarding his whereabouts, we might consider that something serious has occurred.

I thought so too, but he's been gone a rather long time for holiday, don't you think?

TessB
10-11-2005, 07:59 AM
No, the Brits aren't like us. They can take extended holidays. I don't think it is unusual. Hell, they get 5 weeks vacation a year! Taking 3 weeks at a time is probably normal. I'm sure Col is fine.

Am I right on this across-the-ponders? You get quite a bit of vacation time? We Americans usually get 2 weeks and are ecstatic if the company hasn't outsourced our jobs before we qualify for 3 weeks.

In my current job, the most I'll ever get is 3 weeks vacation, no matter how long I'm here.

This was dealt with in another thread when Ken said he went to work by scooter apparently its a cover all word for 2 wheel powered vehicles out in the backwoods  .

Tess is correct about vacations, I have a 17 day trip across the pond booked for next year, mind you as it takes in the Gulf coast between Houston and New Orleans the plans may need changing, still thats small beer compared to what the people have suffered.

I'm pretty fortunate I get 14 days per year at my current job, and I've only been here since November of last year so that is how much I started with.

However, my last job was with a very small company and everyone there only got 5 days of vacation and 5 days of sick time per year no matter how long they worked there. That place was pretty horrible. :(

I would say that no he is not a musician - he is a drummer, they are just people who hang around with us musicians but Col also plays bass and guitar too so he does qualify.

As for his cd output I don't know how you can consider such talented musicianship to be a running joke. Col's cds are so sought after they immediately disappear from the shelves on release and become almost unobtainable collector's items. Indeed I've never known anyone who has one to be prepared to part with it. ;)

It's been so long since I was an employee that I don't remember the actual criteria, you get so many days per year depending on length of service.
Being self employed I have to earn enough to be able to pay myself for days off. I guess if I add them up I get around 13wks a year, though of course I have to work long and unsocial hours during the winter to pay for them  :D

I'll have to give you that one Ken it was a bit mellow. :) My live performances are somewhat less restrained.........

At present my recording career has been curtailed somewhat due to an updated program killing my music pc and after 40 something years playing bass guitar I've just spent all my mad money on a double bass! I may be able to stick a file of my last band on the net soon but the copyright police might get me. Mind you could be worse, could be the taste police :)

I believe Col was on holiday for 2 weeks. He's probably just been too busy to check in or has decided he doesn't want to take part in anymore debates.

I'm sure he is well but it's not like him to be away from the forum for quite so long so it is a bit worrying. I have Col's email address as well as Ally's so I could check to see that all is ok.

Well I'm having a night in with a dvd, trying to recover a bit from last night.........was out on a work's night out with wine flowing a plenty in the office then onward for some bowling, we of course were the weakest team on paper and would you believe it!!!!! We actually Won - the rest have never lived it down especially when there were 3 women in our team and the rest were mostly blokes well known for their bowling skills (some even own their own Golden shoes) ahh well just shows you eh...we've made sure they've heard all about it today :D :p

Still it was a pretty late night with having to be at work for an 8am start again this morning, needless to say a few of us in the office were looking a bit rough

Hope you enjoy your night out Tess, have fun :)

That has to be one the most unusual small community theatres I've ever seen, the locale looks idyllic. Shame there were no pics of the interior though.
How was the play by the way?

TessB
10-16-2005, 07:24 AM
It was great!!! Definitely worth the trip. I was so surprised at the acting ability of my friend, who has really improved his skill from just the last performance we saw. And the other actors were also very believable. Half of the actors were in their senior years and were a delight to watch.

The play itself was hysterical. Much better night of entertainment than what we had been prepared for.

That part of Florida, Sarasota, Bradenton, Venice, Anna Maria Island included, is VERY active in the arts. So, theaters such as The Island Players are not unusual. They are small.... maybe holding 200 people at the most. But they have a great backing, mostly of seniors who enjoy live theater.

In fact, when you go out anywhere in that area, unless it's a nightclub..... you'll likely find yourself to be of the youngest people in the crowd. Largely a retirement community. I spent many of my young years in Sarasota and had gotten used to the demographics. When my husband and I took our first vacation to South Carolina, we stopped for lunch at a nice eatery... walked in, and culture shock set in. You would have thought we had stumbled onto the set of Logan's Run! "Where are all the old people?!?!?" we thought. LOL.... like I said, we had gotten very used to it.

Wow - Col's gonna be well chuffed that he's got a whole thread dedicated to him.

... and SaraMegan ... didn't know you were back. Good to see you.

Well - Col had his 2 weeks away motorbiking around Spain but unfortunately returned with a chest infection, and to his wife Mary having fallen and broken her ankle. He was signed off for 4 weeks to help deal with the situation as Mary is still in hospital in Bristol. He's having a bit of a tough time flitting backward and forward between Colchester and Bristol, and know that he would really appreciate your good wishes.

Re holiday in UK - it differs between companies, but for the NHS, you get 27 days for up to 5 years service; 29 for 5-10 years; 33 days for 10+ years. Management have a whole different system and get 33+ days. It's only just gone up due to something called Agenda for Change (please don't ask me to explain!!) - it used to be 22/25/27 days.

I would love to. But what kind of music would one play with two bassplayers;
Dave Holland/ Barre Philips stuff ? Or plain R&B ?
Years ago, i went to a concert of a two bass band which included Tony Levin, Bill Bruford and Adrian Belew (don't remember the second bass player) . Interesting compositions and incredable musical workmanship. Looked like a sort of try out before they formed the next King Crimson band with Robert Fripp.

BarryMK

Dunno but I saw an amazing Icelandic band called sigur ros on Jools Holland's Later the other week. They had two bass players, a selection of percussion, keyboards, strings and horns. Weird stuff but quite haunting. Back in the sixties a scottish pop/rock band called Marmalade had two bassists, they were superb live so it can certainly be done! On the rest back in Bournemouth I used to play with a guitarist who got the gig over Fripp as at that time Fripp could barely put two chords together!
