In slang, "Owned" basically means to be dominated, beaten, whooped - i think it came from online gaming (but I may be wrong!). For example, in a game of paintball, "I totally owned you dude" would be a good retort post-game to someone who you hit multiple times. A recent example from the news would be a reporter giving a weather report in a snowy field, a group of kids pelting him with snowballs - he got owned :)

Lynsey, the term is used almost exclusively by socially inept, adolescent boys who use their ability to defeat others in online games to validate themselves. The term is not used in reference to real-life abuse or violence.

I think you guys are overreacting just a little bit. As SJ mentioned, it's a l337 term, not to be taken extremely. I think the definition given earlier was probably a little over-exagerative.

This may sound dumb, but why can't I ever see any images in this thread?

It is my understanding that the 'yoof of today' generally use "Owned" in light-hearted situations and scenarios - it is generally not used to denote abuse, assault or pain.

Not withstanding the Slug picture (which to be fair although meant as a joke is in bad taste) at the beginning of this thread, "being owned" is usually taken in good spirits without malice nor vehemence – suffice to say that the (Photoshopped) slug would beg to differ!

For the record, one does not condone cruelty to animals nor violence:)

Amen to that. And even the threads where we do argue aren't as good natured as they used to be. As a result, I've been posting here far less as well, since I'm sick of the Bush/gun/religion topics that have been driven into the ground for the last year +. :(
