View Full Version : Gotta love nature!!
selenau837 12-18-2005, 12:53 PM I was checking my mail, because it finally stopped raining! YEAH
Anyways, there is a chestnut tree in my yard, and heard a crunching noise, so I looked up to see what it was. It was a cute little squirrrel crunching on the few nuts that were left. I smiled to myself and said 'Ahhh, how cute"
I started to head in doors and to my surprise, I got pelted with a nut!!! I looked back up and I swear it looked like it was laughing at me. That little snot!!!
Hehehe....gotta love nature.

You only need to ask on this forum and you'll get several gunslingers round there to shoot the little dear in cold blood:rolleyes: as long as they can look it in the eye then blow its brains out, they'll be happy.

Why hell Colin; if she was any kind of American woman she’d of shot that little bustard herself.

That did cross my mind, but as was stated a while back, not all US people have guns, so its best left to those Americans armed to the teeth who have the urge to kill innocent things to blast it to shreds. they're called Christians arn't they?:D
Col
A better option would be to call in the National Guard, oops silly me, they're in Iraq
Pauldohert 12-19-2005, 05:56 AM As usual the Americans are trying to wipe out the reds - and I thought the cold war was over.
Is it legal to shoot and kill an American in the UK. Does anyone watch River Cottage - are they edible?
I'm talking squirrels!
jsanders 12-19-2005, 05:57 AM Squirrel makes good gumbo.
I prefer road kill myself though. They usually have time to age a little.

Gumbo?
Haven't had squirrel since Grandmother made squirrel dumpling way back in circa '60s. :)
Pauldohert 12-19-2005, 06:16 AM I presume squirrel isn't readily on the menu in the UK because of the warning needed.
This product may contain nuts.;)

Squirrel, dove, Quail, or any wild game. Plus sausage makes great gumbo. One of my grandmothers was raised on a house boat in Lake Charles LA. So we grew up eating all kinds of gumbo. Our family recipe is easily good enough for the best restaurants. But it requires my brother to make it because he’s way better at it than I am.
Unfortunately he lives in Colorado and I live in Virginia. We thought about making a concentrate of it and selling it to restaurants.
selenau837 12-19-2005, 06:34 AM I can shoot well, but no I do not own a gun yet. I am going for my CWP here soon, as soon as my divorce is over. Then my friend is giving me a .22 as a gift. :D

Anywho, I couldn't shoot the li'l snot if I had wanted too!

selenau837 12-19-2005, 06:39 AM Concealed weapons permit.
KenHigg 12-19-2005, 06:48 AM Are you getting the 22 for protection?
selenau837 12-19-2005, 06:56 AM Yes, that is the only reason.!.! That is why I am going about it legeally. You have to pass background checks, test etc. to get it.
That is feel is the only way to have a firearm.
KenHigg 12-19-2005, 06:59 AM May I suggest a slightly more effective firearm? You won't stop much with that. Is there an indoor shooting range in your area where you can go and get advice and test different types?
selenau837 12-19-2005, 07:02 AM Yes, that is where I have been. I have shot a 9 mm and a .22. The 9 mm kicked VERY hard. I still hit the target, but it had a kick.
I like the .22 because it was small, and didn't pack a punch. Besides, that will be free. I will have to save up to get something a bit more powerful.
KenHigg 12-19-2005, 07:05 AM Cool. Sounds like you did your homework. I can see a 9 being bit much. I was thinking more along the lines of a .38.
selenau837 12-19-2005, 07:08 AM I will have to ask my friend to see if she has one of those, and try it out. I was so afraid of guns until 3 months ago when she took me to the shooting range. I fell in love with it from that moment on.
No more fear.
It sounds like you know your stuff too. Do you own any?
KenHigg 12-19-2005, 07:14 AM Several. But most of the members around here anti-gun (and with many good reasons), so I try to avoid the subject :)

For a lot of people pepper spray is more effective for protection than is a lethal weapon.
The reason I say that is because given a situation where either; you may hesitate to kill someone (and nobody knows ahead of time, if you will or not), or the situations is not clearly life threatening. Most people would not hesitate to shoot a would be assailant with pepper spray and sort it out later.
If you are going to get a sidearm try shooting an automatic as well as a revolver. Most people shoot straighter with an auto than a revolver.
jsanders 12-19-2005, 07:32 AM For the three of us? :)
FOFA would join and some of the others could get the blood pressure up.
KenHigg 12-19-2005, 07:36 AM I think I agree on the pepper spray thing. I would rather my wife or daughter had that with them instead of a gun. It's some bad stuff...
selenau837 12-19-2005, 07:44 AM Yes, I may also look into pepper spray, however I would not hesitate to hurt someone that was hurting my children. I can honestly say that.
I can also understand why alot of people are anti-gun. There are bad people with guns. I only wish the gun laws were more strict to own one, so that the wrong people can't 'legeally' get them.
I was also scared of them and against them, until I was taught how to properly shoot them. I was taught to shoot a 9 mm, 357 and a .22.
Anywho, this is about my assault from a squirelle. Heheh.....I swear he was still laughing at me this morning when I left out for work.
One can only laugh as such things!!

I am glad the tree is almost bare. Therefore he can move on and stop attacking me. Now if my children get pelted, I am getting a slingshot, and it will be on like donky kong!!! ;)

My dad's family is from LA. My Grandfather was a cook for the Navy, so when he did cook his Cajiun dinners, we had to invite the entire neighborhood, because he didn't know how to cook small meals.
I did love his Jumblya!! My mouth waters just from thinking about it.
PS, when he cooked, I never asked what the meat was, because I probably didn't want to know. ;)

OMG not another right winger.
The squirrrels here do the same thing, but acorns don't really hurt.
I went squirrrel hunting one year (back in the 70's) and bagged a couple. Cooked them up and hated them. Never went squirrrel hunting again after that.
Something mostly overlooked here is the .32 auto/.32 mag. The guns are small in size, the bullets are of good construction (penetration vs. mushrooming ability) and they hardly have any kick. They are not as good on the "man stopper" list as say a 9MM, but far ahead of the .22's. The .32 mag is better than the auto, but you are limited to revolvers and slightly larger framed gun. The .32 Auto's are a blast to shoot, not as loud, hardly any recoil. If you can I would see if you can try some of them out, maybe even a .380 auto (kind of a weak 9MM). Some ranges will let you rent guns to try. Just a thought.

I will ask my shooting coach and see if she has one. I am sure she can help me out with this.
Must'a been a red neck, thought they'd get a laugh out of it. But recoil sensativity is a funny thing. I really enjoy shooting my 44 Mag with top end loads (redhawk), but can't stand my friends 45 Casul (freedom arms) with the western grip. Yet my T/C 45/70 Gov. dosn't bother me. My daughter likes the pellet guns on the other hand. A .22 dosn't bother her, she dosn't like the noise (or wearing muffs, not sure). Some are just overwhelmed by a .357, yet even high power rounds in a snub nose seems to be just above a .22 to me (not pretending to be macho or anything, just the way it is). On the other hand a friend of mine about half my weight can shoot a 30.06 all day, and 3 rounds has my shoulder reeling.
KenHigg 12-19-2005, 09:00 AM My 7mag is my limit. I just about won't hunt with it... :)

Tell me Selina, if you get a gun and there's a teenage girl, maybe an opportunist, break in your house unarmed - would you look into her eyes and blast her brains out? ( I doubt we'll get an answer, whenever probing questions are asked of the US posters here, they are often ignored)

I try not to ignore questions, especially when they are meant to try and belittle me. ;) . I never once said 'Shoot first, check later' did I? I currently do not own a gun, and it will be sometime before I do. As well as the type of gun I will own was said 'to not do much damage'. I am not out for blood; I am only out for protection.
However if someone broke into my house and attempted harm to me or my children, I would use what ever force is necessary to stop the would be assailant. What is the difference is shooting someone breaking into your house, and beating them to death with your fist, or baseball bat? Nothing in my eyes; Both cause physical damage and possibly death
Isn't the US motto "Happiness is a warm gun?" (written by John Lennon, born UK, killed by a gun in the USA by a crazy gunslinger)
As for that quote, I do not know. That is before my time. :D
ColinEssex 12-20-2005, 05:18 AM I never once said 'Shoot first, check later' did I?
No you didn't.
However, in my scenario, you don't know what the teenage girl may do, they've done nothing yet and is just stood there as are you 10ft away with a gun. When do you shoot? . . . . . . now? or wait and kill them later.
Why do you feel you need a gun anyway? other US posters here have said that its a rare (ish) thing to own a handgun. What is the attraction with a gun?
In the UK I think its a safe bet that most people have never seen a real live gun let alone own one. I know I've never seen one, I wouldn't know one from the other only that they all kill.
Col
ps - apologies for the spelling mistake in your name;)
However, in my scenario, you don't know what the teenage girl may do, they've done nothing yet and is just stood there as are you 10ft away with a gun.
Um, Col, go look back at your post #68, you contradict yourself. Since when is Breaking and Entering "not doing anything wrong"?
Also how can you make a determination on what you are going to do. The situation determines the action.
If she is standing still not moving, a head shot is your best bet, but if she startes to move, go for multiple torso shots
selenau837 12-20-2005, 05:50 AM :p No you didn't.

In your scenario, I would hold her at bay, if possible with dialiog, and call the cops.
Now, if it was a very tall agressive person advancing on me with hands out and menence in their eyes, (notice I didn't specify a gender) I would shoot if I had the gun. That is if I didn't have pepper spray handy. (Which by the way I am getting VERY soon before my next semester starts in the spring)
Why do you feel you need a gun anyway? other US posters here have said that its a rare (ish) thing to own a handgun. What is the attraction with a gun?
In the area I recently moved from it was almost necessary to have one. Meth labs everywhere, drugs etc. That in turn causes people to break in and steal stuff for drug money.

ColinEssex 12-20-2005, 06:08 AM Um, Col, go look back at your post #68, you contradict yourself. Since when is Breaking and Entering "not doing anything wrong"?
My apologies for not making myself clear - Selena was referring to possible harm coming to children etc. my [correct] quote of "they've done nothing yet" refers to the harming of children or adults.
Breaking and entering is a crime in itself - I was merely trying to determine at what point does one actually shoot / kill the intruder.
Its like the question to our Prime Minister, "when do you press THE button?" - when the Chinese or Soviets sail into the North Sea? when they dock at Southampton?
You see, with Selena's new love of guns, adrenaline must play a part and Selena could well shoot and kill an intruder who would no more harm a child than fly to the moon. I said "an opprtunist" - maybe a window left open "inviting" a petty thief in, now Selena has killed them in an adrenalin rush and the 16yr old girl who ran away from home because of cruelty, who was only looking for food is now dead.
In the area I recently moved from it was almost necessary to have one. Meth labs everywhere, drugs etc. That in turn causes people to break in and steal stuff for drug money.
So there is a complete law and order breakdown there - and its up to householders to defend themselves in an anarchic society? like vigilante groups? hang 'em from the nearest tree like in the wild west? Other US posters have said it is not necessary to have a gun at all.
Col

BTW - doesn't "Southern Bell" have an "e" as in "Southern Belle"? (I may be wrong);)

selenau837 12-20-2005, 06:18 AM So there is a complete law and order breakdown there - and its up to householders to defend themselves in an anarchic society? like vigilante groups? hang 'em from the nearest tree like in the wild west? Other US posters have said it is not necessary to have a gun at all.
Gosh, you do put words in peoples post!! Vigilante, anarchic society. I am far from what you percieve me to be.
I am not some gun toten, red neck, beer guzzling woman. I am a educated (even if I can't spell :p ), hard working, single mother who is trying to protect her family the best she can. I will not accept riducule from those who have not walked in my shoes. :D
The lessons were offered to me, so I took them. I see nothing wrong with people learning to defend them selves.

Ouch! Col you are starting to fight dirty:D

Brianwarnock 12-20-2005, 06:30 AM The problem with gun ownership is that it is a vicious circle.
I sometimes think that I would like to have a gun under the pillow incase of an intruder, but if that was likely then the intruder would probably think that he had better have a gun incase the householder has one, and as he is awake and no doubt running on adrenalin the odds are in his favour, so I guess its better just to hand over the money and call the cops/insurance.

I merely read your comments to mean - If an area of a city in the USA necessitates the purchase of a gun because of the fear of drug crazed zombies. One can only assume that the area is a no-go area for police and therefore its up to the residents to render their own law and order - by having a gun etc
I am not some gun toten, red neck, beer guzzling woman. I am a educated (even if I can't spell :p ), hard working, single mother who is trying to protect her family the best she can.
who said you are? I have scanned the posts and I can't find a reference to beer swilling:confused:
I will not accept riducule from those who have not walked in my shoes. :D
no reason why you should, who's ridiculing? I was merely trying to look for logic and reasoning behing your sudden love of guns which does seem to fly in the face of the US posters who are trying to play down the gun owning thing in the USA. Plus trying to assertain exactly when you would pull the trigger - i.e. is there a rule book or something
Bear in mind Selena, in the UK guns owning is very rare as is gun carrying police. So its a bit of a mystery to us why people do it in the USA
Col
You see, with Selena's new love of guns, adrenaline must play a part and Selena could well shoot and kill an intruder who would no more harm a child than fly to the moon. I said "an opprtunist" - maybe a window left open "inviting" a petty thief in, now Selena has killed them in an adrenalin rush and the 16yr old girl who ran away from home because of cruelty, who was only looking for food is now dead.
Petty Thief, so you confront them, they decide that police would be a bad idea and they all of sudden turn from a petty thief into a murderer? See what always throws me on these kind of scenerios, is if the person did not break and enter, than the whole situation would not have happened. Once they cross the threshold, they are a target. One reason I have two big dogs, to discourge that crossing of the threshold.

You’re stating effect and cause not cause and effect.
jsanders 12-20-2005, 06:36 AM The safest protection is a pump or a semiautomatic shot gun. The sound of the shell injecting would be enough to persuade any but actual murderers to leave. So if after hearing the sound they don’t vacate odds are you would need to shoot them.
If you have a 2 story home and your family sleeps upstairs. The safest thing to do is stay at the top of the stairs in the shadow where you can a clear vision of downstairs. This gives you the advantage of surprise.
ColinEssex 12-20-2005, 06:44 AM Once they cross the threshold, they are a target. One reason I have two big dogs, to discourge that crossing of the threshold.
I would suggest if you have 2 big dogs that bark, the thought of entering your house by a petty thief would be revisited and they try somewhere else;)
However, the petty thief doesn't know if the owner has a gun so takes a chance and may end up dead. Slightly different from a dog bite I suspect.
Do you have a gun FoFa?
Col
selenau837 12-20-2005, 06:51 AM I'm not going to argue over this any longer. I am pooped out! (means Tired). However, perhaps this can be debated later on when I am not at work. . Guess I better get back to work now.
I now know there are two subjects not to broach on this forum. Guns and BDSM. :D . Anything else I need to know about. *laughs*
I will don my sweet southern accent and offer y'all some homemade Sweet Ice Tea. *giggles*
Do you have a gun FoFa?
No, I have about 20
KenHigg 12-20-2005, 07:59 AM ... I would shoot if I had the gun. That is if I didn't have pepper spray handy. (Which by the way I am getting VERY soon before my next semester starts in the spring)
Pretty AND Smart. :)

Ahh, thank you! :o Also, don't forget sassy! *giggles*
See my shamless plug to look at my profile worked. :D
Isn't the US motto "Happiness is a warm gun?" (written by John Lennon, born UK, killed by a gun in the USA by a crazy gunslinger)
Isn't that song a penis metaphor?
The Stoat 12-20-2005, 08:22 AM Isn't that song a penis metaphor?
mwhhhaaaa :D More than likely.
MrsGorilla 12-20-2005, 09:05 AM Interesting how this thread turned from nature and squirrels to guns, thanks again to some of the UK posters. Gotta love those hijackers! Threads, that is. :D
I have a squirrel proof feeder (bird), and it is a real trip watching them trying to get into that. Maybe that is why they drop acorns one me. My neigbor just uses a pellet gun to keep them away from his, but I think mine works better. I also have a hanging bird feeder that I feed them with, but they have to either climb along a wire, down a wire, then hang on with the rear legs while grabbing a tidbit, or make a leap and swing uncontrolably when they grab the feeder, That is milding entertaining also.

Yes, I love to watch the ones that spin once the squirrel gets on it. That is so funny.
A squirrel will empty a bird feeder fast. My grandmother puts cooking oil, lard, etc on the poles of her so they can't climb up it.
They are cute and fun to watch, but can do damage to property and people.

I probably had some, and didn't know it yet. Again, I never asked my grandfather what we ate. He simply said, 'Taste Like Chicken'. :D

Those little guys are pretty dang clever. There are very few anti-squirrel bird feeders out there that work. A lot of the time squirrels will team up to accomplish their objective and a lot of the squirrel proof feeder manufacturers don't take that into account.

They can gang up and defeat a bird feeder, but yet can't figure out how to stay out of the road. I have almost wrecked my car trying not to hit those li'l suckers. :(

You only need to ask on this forum and you'll get several gunslingers round there to shoot the little dear in cold blood:rolleyes: as long as they can look it in the eye then blow its brains out, they'll be happy.
wasn't the first to hijack the thread to guns? Besides, I guess it depends on what you mean by "equipment". ;)
