jsanders 12-21-2005, 09:20 AM It seams to be wearing thin of late; this posting on this forum.
The number of post is diminishing and the combination of words is starting to drone on till all I hear is a buzz.
For years I avoided thinking about civic, political, cultural topics instead of more important ones, now it seems that’s all I think about.
I think I’m going to start to wean myself from this place.
It’s been fun chatting with you guys.
KenHigg 12-21-2005, 09:25 AM Pop in from time to time and if there's new topic that interests you. By the way, wasn't it you that was doing the woodwork stuff?
selenau837 12-21-2005, 09:31 AM :( And I just got here! ;)

Its simply addiction and lack of what to so that brings most of us here.
like you with time we loosen but then tempted-to-touch some times we login.
To the die-hards like rich. He chases his post count. I dont know what for:confused:
For some, its the zeal for access-help that keeps them going, probably for keeping inline with VBA if not chasing for that award from Bill.
For the Newcomers, its just for the feel of it.
But i know either way you take, u will try to drop in and may be just take a read.
Vassago 12-21-2005, 10:31 PM When I first came here there never was political talk. We were an Access help forum...full of diverse and intelligent individuals willing to lend a helping hand and crack a joke without having to bring up political or religious topics. That time seems to long be past... :(
.

Since the vast majority of my post count is made up now of posts on the main boards maybe you can work it out for yourself:rolleyes:

For years it wasn't really necessary to think about it, sadly, times have changed for the worse now and the world is a whole different place:(
When people are choosing a holiday destination they used to think "is it hot, sunny, nice beaches etc"
now they think, "is it safe?, will I get blown up?, better not go there, they had a bomb blast last year"

In all seriousness, the li'l witty battles between jsanders and Rich/Col/SJ will be missed. Ahh Hades, he battled everyone. The forum has AWSOME Access/VB help, that is brought me here in the first place; however I got addicted to watching the watercooler to see the flying word among the older timers.
So far I am enjoying the forum.

Never replace such a great mind as he is. However, I can maybe help liven up the place some. *grins* If that is ok.
Just don't 'rile' me up to bad. Ever heard. 'Hades has no fury like a woman scorn.' Well I added this. 'and Heaven help anyone who scorns a red headed woman.' ;)
I am generally good naturned until it comes to my kids, and that will raise my hackles. But I am sure all mothers are like that. Even dads for that matter.

That is why I am learning what to post and not post about. IE, some of the recent topics that have caused some words to fly. Besides I just love the word rile as well as that quote with my li'l addition.
Also,
I will begin to educate the UK crowd on how to speak with a southern drawl, as well as some of our terms. :D If you so desire that is.

Thank you, I shall maybe even share photos one day of my two beautiful li'l ones. One is an aspiring Opera singer. She is 8 yrs old and brings goose bumps when she singer her favorite somes from Phantom of the Opera. The 3 yr old, when asked her age, says she is 16. That one is my handful.

Stay away from Religion and Politics and you will be fine ;-) I think the Watercooler is a good idea; as long as you have regulars on a forum, whatever the nature of the forum people will want to talk about things that are "Off Topic". IMHO this is all there should be; setting up forums with titles like "Politics and Current Events" is asking for trouble.

LOL Do you think when she is 16 she'll be saying she is 31?

I hate she says she is 16. I am only 30, that was tramatic enough. When she is 16, I will be 43. I am not ready for that yet. Althought I still get carded for R rated movies at times.. I know I look over than 18. lol

Just to clarify, Ken, it's Lmnop. You know, like the alphabet? Are you familiar with that song? :p
And the girl I work with has a son who is a year older than my Poopah (Haley is her real name) and they go to the same day care, and she calls him Woobie (his real name is Sammy). So one of these days my Poopah will be in the same room with her Woobie. I think that is kinda cute.

Yup, Morgan Kayli (8) and Gabrielle Evain (3). Yup pretty neat.
Evain is pronounced like Elain, but with a V instead. Incase you were wondering.
I've taken to calling my 2-year-old niece "Sweet Pea". My mother's nickname for whenever we were stupid (especially my brother) was "nunge" with the 'u' pronounced kinda like the 'oo' in "book".

I agree, but I think that was done in an attempt (perhaps a vain attempt?) to keep those topics out of the Watercooler so it could stay more light-hearted. Time will tell if that really happens. :D
MrsGorilla 12-22-2005, 11:01 AM I call Emily "pumpkin" and my husband calls her "sweet pea". It's funny to hear some of the names people come up with. :D
selenau837 12-22-2005, 11:24 AM Gabrielle when she is in a tantrum, her name is Brattle-Axe. :D
Yes, kids really know they are in trouble when they hear their actual name. And know they are in REAL trouble when they her their full name. ;)

exactly, maybe it would be better for the 50 seperate countries within the USA to vote democratically about going to war etc. It may be that they prefer to spend their money on the people, public services, roads, more streetlights, policing, hospitals that treat patients and not ask how you'll pay first.

Bodisathva 12-29-2005, 05:53 AM Are the United States still United? we've heard about each state doing its own thing (like death penalty, gun laws etc) - they all have different laws it seems:confused:
You have to first understand the separation of State Government vs. Federal Government. The Federal Government lets certain topics up to the individual states to decide, others, they determine to be too important to be left to the States and they override them. For example...we used to have a Federally mandated highway speed limit of 55 which was repealed and the states can determine their own speed limit. Flat stretches in Nevada are limitless whereas the congested molasses in Pennsylvania have a 65 limit...all depends upon local possibilities. You also get different points of view when it comes to hotter topics, like gun laws, which depend upon the make up of the local government. People are all for gun bans when they live in the inner city and only see guns used for violence against one's fellow man...but place them in the countryside and opinions change.
So is the United States 50 little countries linked by one language? (a derivation of the Queens English);) :D
not quite...think of it as separate municipalities. The whole is entirely too large to be completely controlled by a central point. The Washington, DC governement is subdivided into State, further subdivided into County, further subdivided into Townships, Cities, Towns, and Boroughs. Each level maintains control of it's respective territory but answers to the next highest level in the chain. So, yes, we get the differing points of view but somewhat diluted by the presentation of the whole.
What's the point of the senate and the White House (whoever is in it) if every state does its own thing? why bother with it?

ColinEssex 12-29-2005, 06:18 AM What's the point in having a Monarch and a Prime Minister?
Yes I thought that was coming:rolleyes: how very predictable:rolleyes:
The Queen does not make laws per se, thats what the government is for. The Queen does have quite a bit of power, but these days she tends not to use it. The Prime Minister meets with the Queen every tuesday to discuss the affairs of state. The British government makes the laws of the UK as a whole. Local county councils can make little by-laws - like you can park here, not here, planning permissions etc etc.
Col

My humblest apologies...I had not intended to hijack or intrude.:o

You boys have a lot of nerve, using my funeral thread as a place to argue.
Yes, but is all in honor of you j. Think of it as a wake. Doing what was done best while you were around. :D
If you were a drinker and we were in a pub, we would all be drinking in your honor, so why not bicker in your honor. :o
selenau837 12-29-2005, 06:51 AM :D Hiccup!! ;)
ColinEssex 12-29-2005, 06:52 AM exactly...the texas bumpkin may have veto power and influence
Mr Bush was born in New Haven, Connecticut, I presume thats not in Texas? so he's a Connecticutian not Texan.
I live in Essex but am from Bristol, therefore I'm Bristolian not an Essexolian. If I lived in Scotland, I would be English not Scottish.
I get the impression that Americans change their birthright depending on where one lives. If (for example) you were born in New York and live in California are you a New Yorker or Californian?
Its back to the Bob Hope and Charlie Chaplin thing - they were English not American:rolleyes:

Since you died months ago your funeral isn't half dragging on, you must be stinking by now, unless you've been preserved with Christmas spirit
Bodisathva 12-29-2005, 07:01 AM I get the impression that Americans change their birthright depending on where one lives. If (for example) you were born in New York and live in California are you a New Yorker or Californian?
You are a Californian if you have lived there long enough for the locals to accept you as one of them...the idea of you are where you were born went with the superfluous 'u's and 'e's so prolific in the 'Queen's English'
I was born in south central Pennsylvania (unfortunately), but lived in upstate New Hampshire long enough to be considered a local. That section of the country holds a special place in my heart and as far as I am concerned, I am from New Hampshire...
Its back to the Bob Hope and Charlie Chaplin thing - they were English not American:rolleyes:
and Hitler was actually Austrian...Who cares?
Yes, but is all in honor of you j. Think of it as a wake.
Nah, he's lingering, therefore we just humour him:cool:

selenau837 12-29-2005, 07:16 AM Where would that twhack be given?
Generally it is given on the offending part. He rolled his eyes, so he was 'thwacked' up side the back of his head.
Before you go there Rich, don't even think about it. I am being good in here. :p
I am being good in here. :p
I'm not:D

Well if people think that Arnie Swartznegger geezer is Californian then its no wonder its so easy for people to be brainwashed in the USA:rolleyes:
The fact someone may be accepted somewhere and have lived there for years does not change your original roots. GWB is not Texan, Arnie is not Californian, Bob Hope is British, Chaplin is British, Hitler is Austrian. Fact.
If someone from Connecticut says they are Texan then they are lying - plain and simple. They should say they live in Texas but are originally from Connecticut.
I live in Essex, have done for 14 years, am accepted by locals, I am Bristolian (180 miles from here) - thats where I was born.
Maybe in time you'll be saying John Lennon was American.

Only if he swore at the flag
KenHigg 12-30-2005, 02:55 AM Seems a bit of a twist over a technicality. If during the course of a casual conversation I mention that I'm from Georgia and the other person has lived in Texas for a number of years and intends to stay there, I'd rather them tell me they were Texan rather than ten-buck-two, unless they simply wanted to add that as a footnote...
As far as Lennon, it appears as though he was a Brit who liked America more than Britain...

jsanders 12-30-2005, 04:45 AM I realize Colin’s just raving as usual (its funny how being a ghost makes everything clearer) But this demonstrate one of the small variations in our otherwise similar cultures.
In America we really have a culture of reinventing ourselves. I believe this culture is not so prevalent in Europe. It’s because when tens of millions of people got here they simply wanted to be American, They kept part of their heritage and the rest they discarded and became new people. We are much less infatuated with birth rights then you guys.
As you travel west, the connection to people’s European roots diminish even more. In the North East (From Pennsylvanian up) People tended to settle in groups so you had many “Little Whatevers” Little Italy” , German Town, etc. As people ventured west into the frontier many would leave the groups of their past and create new ones based on survival instead of ethnic background.
My daughter’s mother is half German, half Norwegian. She is from Pennsylvania.
I’m from Texas and I am some combination of the following
English
Irish
German
French
Native
And Unknown.
In other words American Mutt. The western part of the US is made up of more Mutts than not. There are exceptions though. People in certain areas do retain a high degree of their European ancestors because some of them went west as groups.
I went off on a tangent; In the US unless you’re originally from Texas, people tend to adopt their latest residence as where they say they’re from.
KenHigg 12-30-2005, 04:53 AM Maybe this thread should have been called "I thought the thrill was gone..." :):):)

Born, breed and raised in South Carolina. However when I moved to Columbia it was a HUGE culter shock. Columbia is not a great representation of the South. To many transplants. Even people born in Columbia barely have a southern accent.
Mine has softened up some due to the haressment from ex-in-laws. They use to make fun of me.
But when angry, mine is very strong.
Wow, I need my Ritilian. I started on one thing and ended on accents. Ohh yeah, I have taken it. Ohh lordy mercy. I'm in trouble then. :D
Where was I going with this. HA!! Who cares it is Frakin' FRIDAY!!!! :D :D :D
The last Friday before the next Year. Lets all make peace and end this Forum Friday on a Good note. Remember peoples we all luv each other on here~~~~
<insert NewYears song here> Lets all hug, hold hands and make peace, (almost spelled it piece, then Rich would have laughed at me).

Its ok to say you are from Texas because thats where you live - but if you were born outside of Texas then you are not "Texan"

Yes thats where they're from now - I don't understand how people can say they are "Texan" when they're not:confused: If I lived in Spain I wouldn't be Spanish - I would be from Spain but English
Anyway, I'm off home soon:D we're knocking off early:D

Good, because my hand hurts from thwacking you so much. You know if you keep rollin' your eyes like that, they will eventually do that all the time. You will look like the wiggly eyed stickers.
Shall we call you 'Mr Wiggles'?

KenHigg 12-30-2005, 06:09 AM ...

Thought so... Are you familiar with Craftsman table saws?
jsanders 12-30-2005, 06:13 AM Thought so... Are you familiar with Craftsman table saws?
Yup. what's your question?
KenHigg 12-30-2005, 06:25 AM On the feed guide slot in the table, there are small tabs that prevent the guide from coming up. Kind of like a t-slot set up. Well what I was thinking of doing is grinding these tabs off so that I can make a custom feed slide jig with a rail on the bottom that sits in these slots but these small tabs are in the way. Do you think I'd be messing up my saw? (Or does any of this make sense?)

That is actually referred to as a T-Slot. If you grind the tabs off of your cross slide you will lose the ability to use it to produce downward pressure on the stock if you need it.
I’m not total sure I understand what you’re asking.
KenHigg 12-30-2005, 02:37 PM Does this help
jsanders 12-31-2005, 05:32 AM Does this help
