My Country, Your country

I think the answer to the question, as to why they don’t get on an aircraft, is rather obvious; they don’t have an entry visa.

If they don’t have an entry visa then they would be detained and sent back, just like anyone else who tried it. It is backdoor entry, it is illegal and the law should prevail.

...
These people are fleeing places and situations where it is either impossible or impractical to get proper travel documents.

It is not illegal for people to arrive in our country and seek asylum, it's a rather facial argument to state that it is illegal and a backdoor.

...

...Customs has a job to do under the prevailing law and they should do their job. If it becomes politically incorrect then the law should be changed so that the law can still be enforced by the people entrusted to enforce it.

...

The Customs Act and the Immigration Act are two separate pieces of legislation with completely different purposes, they are also administered by different departments.

The Customs Act aims to protect the revenue (by controlling the arrival and departure of goods) of the Commonwealth and is administered by the Customs Department, whilst the purposes of the Immigration Act is to control the arrival and departure of people, and is administered by the Immigration Department.

we are; you might be surprised to find out a signatory to the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and we are currently doing a very bad job of living up to the ideal to which we singed up to.

>>The Customs Act and the Immigration Act are two separate pieces of legislation with completely different purposes; they are also administered by different departments. <<

With the possibility of a difference between two departments each department could duck shove responsibility all day long. Yet both departments should be under the control of the prevailing government.

The prevailing government is at fault by not keeping both departments in check. But by not keeping both departments in check the government can duck shove responsibility to two departments.

I’m sorry if that sounds like an episode of “Yes Minister”.

Chris.

The problem is that both the major parties are in a race to the bottom. Pandering to the basest, of perceived public opinion, whilst the MSN whips up ill informed public opinion which further drives the politicians, to think no further than the next election. Meanwhile people rot in indefinite detention, whilst you and RainLover point and whine about what a swell time those people are having at our expense (what with TV's and all that). If these people where screened in a more timely manner and released into the community, in a supervised manner, they could start to contribute to society rather that being a drain, whilst contributing to the ever growing coffers of G4s.

I am not going to continue along these lines of discussion.

It is part political and is becoming racist.

I would prefer to discuss my visit to the Grand Canyon or Jellystone National Park.
And for the Canadians, did you know that there is an increasing number of older Australians who want to travel the Coast of Canada and up to Alaska. I should put that one on my list for when I get old. Next Year.

...unless of course you consider the concept of "A fair go" racist  but then I thought that was supposed to be the corner stone of the Australian way. How deluded I've become :(

Since the conversation has turned this way .

I remember the Christmas Island boat sinking - and reading the comments page of an Aussie paper online - hundreds of comments - 90% + were - good, serves em right, whoohoo a celebration of the death of men, women and children who just wanted a better life - fleeing from God knows where. For a country full of economic migrants - i found this not only disturbing - but about as perverse as a country could be.

Casual paranoia, fear and misinformation seem rife. The kind you only get here - on a drop out estate.

The constant racism is one of the reasons my wife and many of her friends now in the UK left the place or rather cant tolerate the idea of going back.

Shame - cos its more sunny.

So the UK doesn't have any racists then?

The vast majority of Australians are decent people. You must be very naive to expect that online comments give a true representation of the wider community.

but about as perverse as a country could be.
The way you lump us all together in your comment sounds rather prejudiced if not racist itself.

Personally I am quite happy for you to never come back here.

I am sorry to here that your stay here was not as you expected. A very unfortunate experience for you.

I certainly hope that you weren't given the Tag of a whingeing Pome. That would have made your stay even more unpleasant.

At least you are home now with Family and Friends who have things in common with you.

Couldnt live in Oz, too god damned hot for me, plus weirdly enough I'd miss the rain

? Well I am disappointed. I guess I had the erroneous opinion that Australia did not tolerate the nonsense on immigration that our liberal politicians here in the US take. It is political, but I for one am not a racist. I don’t consider it racist to enforce the law on any group. It is also part of the thread. I started it to find out more about countries. I prefer the good, but bad happens.
When I visit other countries I try and get away from the tourist areas and get to meet the people and customs in their real world. I meet great people in every country I visit, some not so great, but that’s the real world. I can’t travel much for a while since my wife’s amputation but her condition is improving. I did just take a 5 day trip from Florida to Paceland, SC for their Water melon Festival If anyone is interested see the attachment.

BTW when I hit quote I get the whole post. How do you get just a portion in the blue box?

You would love Tasmania. Very cold in Winter to mild Summers. However not as much rain as you may be used to. They even have snow. It is lush and green.

Give it a Google. You might be very surprised.

I did this blue bit by a copy from your post then going to the reply window and clicking on the Quote Icon, then paste.

The Icon is the one on the far right. Or you can do it manually with

leaving out the trailing spaces.

Don't be disappointed. The only countries that don't have similar problems are the ones that meet you at the boarder with a gun. There are always groups that cry "Badly done by" and although one may not agree with them they do supply a necessary alternative point of view.

What we do need to worry about is when a group will not assimilate and insist on maintain those customs from which they have just fled. Most Australians believe in the FIFO system.

If you ever come down here allow plenty of time. Australia is a big place. In fact we are just a little smaller than mainland US. That is without Alaska and Hawaii.

Our animals are different. From a cute Koala that will rip you apart unless tamed, the most deadliest snakes, drop bears and unicorns. Kangaroo, Emu, Platypus and some of the most beautiful birds.

Then if you like the Marine life we have the Great Barrier Reef which is one of the seven wonders of the world. If you go diving or snorkeling on the reef you will find a different world with a blend of colours that simply are breath taking.

A word of waring, just watch out for those two legged animals. They act very nice to you but what they want is your tourist dollar.

You forgot to mention the Stingrays ;)

Now I have blue all over. What did I screw up? I am trying to get the quote in its own box like your guys do.

For isolated portions of a quote, I usually use the Reply with Quote first, then edit the text in the quote that appears, deleting what I don't want to use.

I loved Fort Lauderdale, FLA on my visit in 1959. They were casting extras for the movie, Where the Boys Are...but I couldn't stay long enough to sign up. I happen to have been the same age as most of the actors in that movie.

Cheers.

The Text inside the Quote marks is Blue. Outside is Normal.
