Go to your corners and take your spots on the time-out chairs and hold your breath for 60 seconds. This is the best Access forum on the web for a number of reasons. An important one being that until recently we conducted ourselves with respect for our fellow posters. The exception being Rich and Colin with their rabid anti-American rants which were at least confined to the Watercooler and Political forums. That anger recently bubbled out into the general forums and involved a large number of people. Colin was banned for a few days and Rich and Mike375 were deleted and now Bob has gone into self-imposed exile probably as a result of the post that suggested he be removed as a moderator. I don't know what can be done about recovering the deleted accounts, but I'll look into it.

We are very lucky to have attracted a number of Access MVPs (you can thank me for that since I was the one who brought this forum to the attention of Microsoft) as well as other knowledgable people who make substantial contributions. This experienced membership makes this the best place on the web to get your questions answered. If you persist in personal attacks, people will leave.

Do not kill your golden goose by making this an unplesent place to be.

Please let this be the last post started on the topic. The muckraking must end. I will delete any post started on this topic by a poster with fewer than 1000 posts. I will not delete posts started by regular members because I don't believe in censorship but I am begging you to stop now.

Thank you.

You were heartbroken here some years ago Pat when a hacker dropped your postcount by circa10K, how would feel if the person chosen to set an example here used a back door method to completely destroy a member out of sheer spite and hatred?

Pat,
I completely respect what you are saying and I agree. One thing that would keep this place pleasant is some reassurance from the administrators that in the future, nobody will be deleted out of personal revenge, and nobody's posts or titles will be altered in the way that was done this week. Without knowing the full truth of what happened, and without some assurance that it won't happen again, I think that this issue will continue to linger.
Sincerely,
Alisa

Pat, I also respect you and completely agree with what you said. This site has helped me out more than one time in the past and I have enjoyed getting to know many of the people here. I also agree with Alisa's sentiments though. It appears as though what happened was an act of vengeance.

Things got out of hand. Certainly the management did not authorize deleting anyone and the deleted accounts will be recovered if possible. I don't know enough about the forum software to know if there is an audit trail that would lead to the person who did the delete but there are only a small number of candidates. Quite possibly, myself among them.

I've spoken with Bob about it. He's stood down. Given the current brouhaha, which I can certainly understand, I think it's only right that he has done so.

For me, what has made this forum great over the years is that it has never needed a heavy hand as regards the membership. Indeed, for a few years it never had anyone in control, other than the admin, Jon. I became the forum's first moderator with the intention of zapping the occasional bit of spam which otherwise would have sat there on the server. Spam's gone up with inflation. But I've always felt that the forum, having never had a set of rules, should never have rules. Everyone keeps each other in check. That's always been the beauty of it. (Other than removing rogue links and the occasional offensive remark that's just one step too much.)

My feelings are that the forum went downhill a bit because of a few different reasons:

  • The splitting up of the Watercooler into so many inactive areas.
  • George W. Bush. 'Nuff said.

Aside from all the great help, this area soured the forum and created much ill sentiment amongst many who had been friendly before. I hope we can move on from it.

Rich, if puzzled is you, which I suspect it is, I've sent a message to Jon asking if there's a backup of the server from before your account was deleted so that it can be reconciled with the current database. Fingers crossed. Mike375, too.

Agreed - I know I'm a 'junior' member but this has to one of the best forums (not just Access forums) I've come across hence the reason I still visit virtually every day (when I can), especially in the Apps and Windows forum where I feel I can be of some use, as many of you have help me out with Access which I am a relative novice on hey it's only fair the spread the knowledge ;).

What has happened recently has soured this site and the banning/ deletion of regular members (justified or not) is sad. Let's hope this will be the end of it and we can all get on - there will always be spam and 'controversial' posts but self regulation is always been good here.

Group hung everyone :p

Thanks Stewart, but don't bother going to any real trouble, the posts are still there, I now have the Rich name back but I can't do anything with it yet, Thanks for all the support recently guys, I'm deeply touched now let's drop the subject and move on guys
And before any of you buggers start cracking jokes on the last remark, you better have broad shoulders or a pair of .........:D
:):)

We could just get rid of the "Non Access Issues" area for six months or so.

After all, this is not what this forum is supposed to be about. Bring it back after everyone has calmed down a bit.

You want to see the group hung?

OK OK a 'virtual' group hung, I can see group action elsewh...erm...nevermind :D

I think is good to have this area - people can express their opinions about almost anything, it brings a more rounded site IMO - but the bitchiness, excessive views, personal vendettas should not get out of control and that's up to all of us not just the mods ;)

So ... the antogonists are rewarded and regarded with respect and showered with pity, while the victims (albeit also antagonistic in response -- or is that defense???) live in exile, regarded as weak? .... interesting.

No one is being rewarded. Fact of the matter is that the accounts should never have been deleted in the first place.
