I am very new to Access especially 2010. I am trying to do a data macro. I followed the instruction from help menu. I open my table as per instruction and then try to click on the before and after event however the toolbar for the before and after event under the table toolbar is grey out and I cannot access it for some reason. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? Please help.

Hi Emily,

Is this a local Access table or a linked Access table?

If it's a linked table, that's why the options are grayed out. You can only create data macros on local tables. To create them on the linked tables, you'll need to open the source database file that contains the actual tables. You can then add/edit/delete data macros attached to those tables.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your reply. None of the tables work in my database, I even tried to create a new table and it still did'nt work. However when I created a brand new Database with a new table, those options become available to me. There must be something that is locking me from creating data macro. The original database is local on my PC and was written in Access 2003 which got upgrade to 2010. Do you think that might have something to do with it?

Hi Emily,

If your existing database is a .mdb file with the 2000 or 2002-2003 format, you cannot create data macros on those tables. You can only create data macros on your tables if the database is using the .accdb file format. MDB files cannot understand data macros so those options are grayed out.

Hi Jeff,
I got it to work after I converted the database from .mdb to .accdb format. Thanks a million!

That's great Emily, I'm glad to hear your issue is resolved.

Good luck with your study of Access 2010.
