My department is using Windows XP Pro with Access 97. We were advised by our MIS group that we need to install the latest Service Pack (SP1) for Windows XP Pro.

After reading the details on the SP1 update, it mentions that the Microsoft Jet Engine 4.0 will be updated. Access 97 uses the 3.5 Jet Engine. If I apply this update, will it update my Access 97 Jet Engine to the 4.0 Jet Engine? If it does, will I have any problems with my current (or future) Access 97 applications? Will my users who might have the the 3.5 or 4.0 Jet engine have any problems with my applications if I develope the db with 3.5 or 4.0? Most of our applications are using the RunTime version of Access 97 but not all are opened in RunTime. Our Access 97 applications are heavily coded with VBA.

Obviously, I am very nervous about this Windows XP Pro SP1 update. I do not want to mess up our Access 97 applications!

Here is the link to the SP1 update @ the Jet Engine 4.0 update

Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions!

Sounds interesting... still using acc97 but office XP? Judging by the date of the post, you've probably solved your problems. just in case though, here are some ideas...

It might be a good time to upgrade to Jet4. It's not a difficult as it seems to upgrade your code. There are a few major differences (aside from ADO vs DAO) that you can look for and fix.

(i've attached a whitepaper on converting DAO to ADO... in two files b/c of file size limitations. this post and the next one)

You can always reference DAO in addition to the default ADO in 2000 until you can totally upgrade.

Installing 97 & 2000 on same computer
