Hi. I have a database containing various linked tables and all has been fine for years.
I now have to add some fields to the main table and change some field sizes. I know about the 255 field limit. And I know that an individual record cannot exceed 2K.

BUT, when I simply lower the size of a text field, (i.e., from 40 to 30), I get either the message Too Many Fields Defined or Record Is Too Large.

Ideas???

Wayne,

Thanks for the suggestion that I will try.

Meanwhile, if I close compact the table after each 1 or 2 changes, than it is okay. Otherwise, not. A real pain.

Have you tried importing all the items into a new blank database? If you reach the maximum number of fields, controls, etc. over the life of the database (and it keeps track), you will get to a place where you can't go any further, even though you don't actually HAVE the maximum allowed.

Try creating a blank database and import all of the objects and see what that does for you.

Thanks for the info.

I did not know that it kept track of 'evereything' over a database's life, if you did regular compacting.

Yes, it's something that isn't logical and shouldn't be, but that's Microsoft for you.

I agree about Microsoft, but...

I still need help!
