I have a split database (Access 97).

I've included the menu item that compacts and repairs a database in a custom menu that is always available to the user. Will that compact both the front AND back end of the split db?

I am curious, does bloating occur in both ends or just one? If so, which end does the bloating occur in?

If you change objects in the front end the size of the fe mdb grows..therefore you need to compact it. However, compacting is a huge issue in itself...if you notice many db's actually grow larger in size after many compacts. There are many reasons why and the internet is full of articles. I posted numerous times a way to dramitically reduce the size of a db using a little trick. Search under my login.

The BE needs to be compacted as well.

mission2java_78,

Thanks! Will read up on this some more!

So far, I found out there is no way to compact the back end from the front end without code and I have NO IDEA where to start for that.

I have found some compactors that will compact a several database files at once but won't hanlde a db file with a password on it (which in my case is true). I do remember seeing one that handles passowrds a LONG time ago but can't find it anymore, anyone have any idea of where I can find one like that?

Even with code you should not be able to compact the be db. The reason being is access creates an .ldb file which means someone is using the db and you're trying to compact it ... which access doesnt like. The person in there is you..since you're in th efront end which has attached tables to the be.
