Hi,
Just now joined this forum.
I am not a professional in IT. I am a medical doctor, but I have some good experience (I think) in access. I created lots of databases for various purposes mainly for auditing my work. Now I am facing quite a challenge. I was asked by my department to take over departmental rota. This is just for consultants and trainees, but it is not simple as it would include a number of activities. I have some ideas and I was wondering if there may be a thread in this place or even examples of solutions of what I want. I am going to do a search anyway now but if anyone knows where I can start, I would very much appreciate it.
Many thanks
lbs

Hi. Welcome to AWF!

Hi, lbs, and welcome. We would love to help. Just a word of warning. Most of us are not medical doctors so remember to use English descriptions rather than abbreviations or acronyms when describing the practical parts of your problem.

i 2nd this notion! it reminds me of my time with Rockwell Collins when I went into my first meeting and the manager started throwing out a slew of acronyms. I interrupted him immediately and said "before you go any further can you give me a list of all the acronyms you will use in our meetings during the next 12 months and the meanings of them in a seperate column?". Funny thing was, after I said that the woman sitting next to me, who had been working for the company for more than 20 years, said immediately: "can I get one of those too"?

Yep, and I won't even TRY to tell you of all the acronyms I had to deal with through the U.S. Navy data center. We had acronyms with all of the Navy internal departments. And, thanks to reorganizations coming from the top down, I can honestly say that I worked for COMNAVRESFOR, COMNAVRESFORCOM, NAVRESINFOSYSOFF, and NEDC-NO - without ever changing my job description, duties, or immediate project name (which was RHS). The only reason my phone number ever changed was when we were moved to a new facility 'cause the old one got too crowded, and for a while after Hurricane Katrina we were in temporary offices. But hell, I kept the same chair for 10 years through three of the four name changes.

So if watch out for acronyms. Having said that, don't be afraid to ask questions, lbs. Just talk to us like you would talk to children whenever you start into get med-tech discussions. Some of us behave like kids anyway sometimes, so it would be appropriate.

:D

@lbs - yes, welcome to the forum. I saw your other post about duplicating meeting records, and here you speak of solutions for what you want. Those factors make me wonder if what you want is a database that acts like a scheduler. That has been done but I don't know if it duplicates meetings. It does look somewhat like an Outlook calendar though.

Adam, it isn't ALWAYS about you. Sometimes I can get silly, too, you know.

in that case I'm glad I'm not alone. :D do you think it's possible that we would ever be close enough in proximity to grab a beer at a pub? (maybe this should be in a PM?)
