    Turning many columns into 2

Telling me to read up on normalisation isn't a solution. :) Even if I do go with one mark per row I still would like to know how to GET them that way without making people spend hours creating the tables by hand for import.

    Turning many columns into 2

You know what... forget it. I don't even know why I bother to try to get help here. I said in my original message that I've given you the bare minimum of what I'm trying to do in order to spare everyone the gory details, but obviously you didn't get that far before you decided I hadn't learned...

    Turning many columns into 2

    Every year, we receive data about what exams our students will be taking. This comes in a standard format that can't be altered until after we receive it: student_id 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 ... 40 1234X 1 3 4 6 2234X 2...

Would like help with error checking/validation (I think)

Cheers, Wayne! I'll give that a go. :) *edit* It seems to be working. Er, and took me a couple of minutes, but then I realised that in: "From tbl_prt1_markbook Where student_id" - student_id needed brackets. heh. :) Thanks again for your help! It's very much appreciated! :) *2nd Edit*...

Would like help with error checking/validation (I think)

Hi there! I've written a function (my first!) that uses a switch() against a query to set the text in two fields of a table and I'd like to be sure that the row it's getting the data from and the row it's setting the fields in match. Specifically (and someone reading this probably already knows...

Number of values matching criteria across a row

Thanks again for all your help, Neil - when I tried to use the method you gave me, it ended up trying to count the number of students who had more than 70 marks instead of how many of their marks were >= 70. Like I said, I'm sure it was just something I was doing wrong. :) Anyway, I've been...

Number of values matching criteria across a row

Sorry, Neil - guess that would have been helpful. One of those days! Basically, it's for an exam markbook. There are 13 possible exams, each student sits up to 7 and receives three marks per exam; 1 mark from each of two examiners and a mark they agree on. One of the ways in which a...

Number of values matching criteria across a row

Mm, no, sorry - it's still not working for me no matter what I try. I keep getting absolutely nothing from the query. Could you please provide a concrete example of what you mean using the format of the second set of data I posted earlier? If I can see exactly what you mean, I should be able...

Number of values matching criteria across a row

I suspected the second query would be more useful for this particular bit, but I couldn't get *anything* to work properly, which is why I gave both formats. :) Thanks for your advice, anyway, I'll give it a go. I'm sure I was just missing a bit out when I tried before. -Jen

Number of values matching criteria across a row

Dear all: I can't seem to figure this one out on my own; I'm trying to create a query that counts the number of values in fields across a row that match certain criteria. For example, the data I'm querying looks like: ID 01-1 01-2 02-1 02-2 03-1 03-2 04-1 04-2 1 85...

    Making a dictionary

Ah, sorry - I wasn't clear. :) It's not 10 words at a time, it's 10 custom dictionary files. The files can be up to 64KB in size. Still may not be big enough for what you need, though. :( That 'on change' thing sounds like it would cost a *whole* lot in system resources. I'd check into the...

    Making a dictionary

.lex files are binary and not just flat text files and there isn't really a way to view the MS Word .lex file; see: http://help.lockergnome.com/office/view-edit-lex-file-ftopict632926.html Particularly the response from Doug Potter. If you want to create a proper custom .lex file, the best...

Using data in one table to create fields in a new table

*smile* I guess it does sound a bit like I'm getting frustrated, but I'm not! I know you're trying to help! :) (My last post originally had a bit that said I didn't mean to sound contentious or ungrateful to the people who'd actually tried to help). I do see where you're going with your...

Problems with recording data in table through forms

You just need to make sure your second (etc) form knows which field to put the info into... you can do this by making sure each record has a primary key that is represented on the form - either hidden or not - and then linking them in the event called by the button. The VB code could look like...

Using data in one table to create fields in a new table

What I'm asking for is not design advice, but some way to create or alter a query that will make a table with dynamically assigned field names based on data I already have. I know my design, as presented here, isn't ideal, but normalization is a way to omit needlessly repeated data, and I...
