Indexes in Access - when to use - modelling question

As corroboration of Colin's point, I regularly work with VERY large tables. I'm talking nearly 2 billion records and over a TB in table size. Certain searches would take 20 to 30 minutes before indexing, and 2-3 seconds after indexing. That's an extreme example, but it shows the worth of...

    Split Database speed

Yep, the other guys are right. I worked at a place with offices in both Detroit, Michigan and Tempe, AZ, and we had to deal with the databases getting corrupted constantly and ridiculously poor performance on a daily basis until we bit the bullet and transferred the back end to SQL Server...

    Combo Box Length Limit?

According to one of the links provided earlier, combo boxes just truncate text fields at 255, period.

    Combo Box Length Limit?

Sorry, guys, I'm grouchy and irritable this morning for some reason. (Moreso than normal.) I do appreciate the suggestions, even though I can't implement them due to other concerns.

    Combo Box Length Limit?

Jdraw - that's why I said 'that user' and not 'that woman'. This time the User From Hell just happens to be a woman. Last place I worked, it was a guy. The comments are hand-written explanations of why this particular case was rejected by Medicare, and are required to be precisely what we...

    Combo Box Length Limit?

Yeah, saw that. Don't like 'because it's a memo field' as an explanation. Also was hoping that things might have been improved between Access 2003 and Access 2016.

    Request For Template

That would be the place I was referring to. :p I just didn't want to actually link it until he either showed interest or shot the idea down.

    Request For Template

If this is for work, you might consider buying a system. I do know a place that provides several school-based databases for what appear to be reasonable prices. It's even on your side of the pond.

    Combo Box Length Limit?

Yeah, the problem is that you don't know the primary user. Making the suggested changes involving a textbox would cause more drama than I really care to deal with. This is one of those people who is utterly against any form of change, and she outranks me enough to turn this into one giant...

    Combo Box Length Limit?

From what I can tell, the original dev created it so that users could just select previously entered comments and apply them to the records that were selected when the form is opened. The combo box itself is based on a staging table that is populated with all comments already applied to the...

    Combo Box Length Limit?

They're probably going to have to learn to live with it then. This is a convenience deal meant to allow them to take preexisting comments and apply them to new records, and I can't justify to my boss the time it would take to create and test a new form, especially for a convenience feature...

    Combo Box Length Limit?

Okay, I'm stumped. Is there any way to display more than 255 characters in a combo box? This is for Access 2016, for what it's worth. The reason is that in an application I inherited, there is a method for users to update the 'Comments' field on multiple records at once. During this update...

    Google's BIG Plan!

No, no, I'm pretty sure it's our local mathematics and statistics superdupergenius who recently informed us all that he only answers questions that he knows are out of everyone else's league. I envision Damon Wayans every time I see his screen name. :D I think you missed that thread. I saw...

format function not working in access 2016

From what I can tell, he's tried everything suggested except trying to run it with a comma (on the off chance that it's a strange 2016 bug involving Format and regional settings).

format function not working in access 2016

Out of curiosity, have you tried just replacing the semicolon in the Format functions with commas and not changing anything else?

format function not working in access 2016

Well, I expect that will certainly make a mess of things if he changes the list separator if he has used a bunch of code. Might be easier to just use a comma in the Format functions.

format function not working in access 2016

I found a thread with a similar problem at answers.microsoft.com. The user didn't mention semicolons, but everything else was the same. He solved it after going to a backup, relinking the tables, and redoing his changes...

format function not working in access 2016

Ah, fair enough, thanks Colin. Here's a thought: What is the actual name of the control? Do you have a field with an identical name? And does the control source begin with "=" ?

format function not working in access 2016

Actually, you're wrong. All VBA functions including Format use commas, not semicolons, to separate parameters. Semicolons are used to separate lists in the UI.
