think i have 'brain-fade'. (no comments please) i have an unbound date field on a form. when an illegal date is entered, like 02/30/2001, i get: The value you entered isn't valid for this field... yes, i know how to handle this with VBA! but, i'm just certain i once wrote a validation rule...

jonny, i don't use a 'wheeled' mouse, they're supposed to have tiny little feet, right? but think you should try setting the form's cycle property to Current Record as i suggested...see if it makes any differnce. if that doesn't work try...

as alex suggested, you need to use a control. put strA and srtZ into 2 controls on your form, with the control for srtA in bold. by placing them carefully (right justify,left justify) you can give the appearance of one contiguous field... al

SteveA, not sure what you are suggesting...but i think the BeforeUpdate event will fire for each control on the form...and if you want to preserve the initial values, that won't work. al

liv, put a couple of unbound text controls on your form (hidden), then as jwindon suggests use the OnCurrent event to populate them with the old values from your table/query. in the afterupdate output: user,hidden1,hidden2,Name,Age to your log... hth, al
