yes vbaInet I didn't even know I hadn't understood:) I unfortunately didn't have a good grounding in VB programming class. However I'm encouraged to pick up "VB for dummies" and start afresh. Your help is much, much appreciated.:)

many thanks to you, vbaInet and the others who've helped me thus far. I hope to improve on my Access programming and contribute to this site as well:) however I double clicked on a record but nothing happened. I tried to see if there was a double click event which can be programmed but I...

I tried to double click the record in the header section but nothing happened... is it supposed to populate the form? I had a issue with the searchbox accepting only one character. I don't see that you changed any event for the searchbox. So just adding a subform/subreport fixed that?

brilliant! thanks CJ London. I plan on renaming the fields however to be clear, when you say "To open the appropriate record, double click on the appropriate row" are you referring to the records in the header section? double clicking populates the form itself?

hey everyone thanks for your advise. Yes the field names were a nuisance from the beginning. I'd originally intended for data to be entered directly into the table in datasheet view and people insisted on knowing what the real column names were. Well life has progressed since then and I'm...

okay I've attached a sample. I hope that is what you meant by a stripped down version. I had a bit of a struggle with the table validation rules.

the control is unbound and I've looked at the properties again. I don't see another code. unless... as soon as I type the 1st digit in the searchbox, the first record having [TripID] with a similar 1st digit populates the form (tab page and all). could using the actual program names of the...

very much appreciated vbaInet!! The pesky bug is gone but... I can only type in one digit in the searchbox. Each digit overwrites the previous one:eek:

    like this?: .Filter = "[TripID] Like '*" & cmdSRCHBOX.Text & "*' OR [PatientID] Like '*" & cmdSRCHBOX.Text & "*'

don't if it helps but [TripID] and [PatientID] have number data type. would they need to be converted to string?
