I would deffinately recommend and upgrade to at least Access 2000 as 1997 is pretty outdated now. The problem sounds like Access is having difficulty reading edited code when the form is open hence having to close & reopen to refresh.

well from i can see you are trying to reference a value from the checkbox what you need to say is whether the chkbox is selected or not. I dont usually deal with chkboxes but being boolean type of data it cant be difficult to figure out. It will be something like: Me!Check7!Enabled = True

when you try to compact & repair a db if it is corrupt in any way then it will automatically create a backup file.. Your best bet is to rebuild the db imo...
