I hate to be a negative nanny, but I suggest moving the bar to a less dominating position. In its current location it seems to take up valuable real estate (namely blocking certain thread titles). Maybe others won't find it as intrusive.

If you wish to ignore someone, follow these steps: Click their profile name. Click "View Public Profile". Click "User Lists". Click "Add to Ignore List". Once you do that, you will no longer see posts by that person.

I'm not sure if this is related, but my computer at work usually blocks all ads regardless if I am using FF or IE (it's a corporate-wide setting or some such). However, this morning was the first time I noticed the ads on the work computer.
