Here's a thought... Add a yes/no field in the table. Use a checkbox rather than a button on the form bound to the field. If the checkbox is checked then the control of your choice is locked, not enabled, not visible, or whatever you want.

I thought it was odd that it did not demand to convert on opening.

You could also try creating a new blank database. Import all objects from the old one into the new one but not the old form that gives you trouble. Make a backup before trying anything though just in case!

Yes, that was the trouble! I looked at all other instances where I used this and only the one had the extra period in it. 2000 must have overlooked this error as it never gave trouble before. Nice catch - Thanks a lot!

If you would settle with compact on close, go to tools/options and I think the general tab. There should be a checkbox there for compact on close.

I checked out the trouble. I had converted the FE to 97 but not the BE. The menu opens fine on load but when a form is asked to open, it of course is requesting info from the BE and throws an error of unrecognized database. I guess this is to be expected. Today I will try converting the BE to 97...
