What version of Access are you using? Is it by any chance an Access 2003 converted to 2007 or above? I am assume since you stated it is on a server, it is a split database? Are both front and back ends the same version?

If it is just a form - can the users not use the "Access Data Collection" tool. Access can import data from forms embedded in emails. It is easy to use as long as you have internet/emails.

Your data type for your columns is set to text....change it to number and try again. You will have to do this in the table design view - ensure all the content of your field is a number before you do this - otherwise you may find it hard.

if I leave disk in machine but open it and switch on...the disc can be heard making quite loud noises, not to mention in performance read/write speeds are slower than desired. It is a P4 machine with only 512mb of RAM but the disc is certainly an issue..

I installed Ubuntu on the main disk (more of a test than anything). Unfortunately that is definately a disk which is failing so I need to install it onto the 2nd disk. I will switch their positions over tonight and try and install Ubuntu again (I don't have a Windows Recovery disk etc).
