Some Noob Questions about the Foundations

@gemma-the-husky Thanks for your insight, this a tool for my own use only and not for a financial services firm managing investments, I don't think Access would be the tool for that. Since its just for my own use, I have only a limited budget which is why I'm interested in learning more about...

@Isaac Thanks so much for the insight, I'm torn between my new learning DB obsession and wanting to build two tools in Access which I'm working on, but I am definitely up for SQL and will be trying it soon.

Some Noob Questions about the Foundations

@CJ_London thanks yes this makes perfect sense, I am too weak right now on how to robustly join related data back up. I believe I am in far better place with normalization now I will try to focus on queries, forms and reports before testing with some dummy data, exciting times!!

Some Noob Questions about the Foundations

@Pat Hartman Thanks Pat that does make it clearer and it fits with my understanding of tables being generally either of an "object" "event" or "join" type, I think I was guilty of some "Excel think" with regards foreign keys being "automatically" entered into child tables in the way an Excel...

@Isaac Thanks for your observations about DBMS that's very useful, MS SQL server does make good sense for me since it plays nicely with Access and Excel. Also because I work in businesses of all sizes it is often used. infact it reminded me of a project where I was Finance lead and joint sponsor...

@Isaac thanks for the warm welcome I appreciate your insight on this, I have been pondering the best way and the quickest way to get the Access skills I need. For sure I'm guilty of being a creature of habit my work in Excel model building demonstrates that, one perspective is "it's tried and...

Some Noob Questions about the Foundations

@CJ_London Thanks for your help, if anyone was willing to look at the file that would be amazing, I will progress it as best as I can before doing that so as to not waste anyone's time (or patience!) :) Some questions on a few points you made: "it is poor practise to use lookup fields in...

Some Noob Questions about the Foundations

@The_Doc_Man Thanks for your helpful comments, it's good to know I am on the right path - I can confirm that I believe that I have access to all the data that should be needed for this exercise, some of the reporting on these exchanges can lack a helpful audit trail but with time I will be able...

@The_Doc_Man, apologies just a bad choice of username, no worries completely understand - I will change it as soon as the rules permit, it was certainly not my intention to be advertising for clients or misusing the forum in any way, I am genuinely a new Access user who needs to learn a lot ( as...

Thanks for the welcome Doc_Man, I totally see that now, once the tables were designed and populated with data it soon became clear that the table design had comprised reporting ability albeit by making it harder than it needed to be rather than "impossible". In addition a little research on...

Thanks for the welcome Bob, good to know I'm not alone in that - so far for me it seems like a case of breaking old ways of thinking and learning new ones along with learning lots of new skills too, I think my project would be pretty simple for an experienced programmer so all things considered...
