this is probably really easy to do, but for some reason, i can't get it. i have a report field (like, a calculation of two fields in a query), but i can't get the report to sort by that field.

Open your report in design view. Make sure the Formatting tool bar is on. Click the Sourting and Grouping button. You will see a popup that will help you with this.

You can't sort by a field that is calculated by the report for obvious reasons. If you want to sort by something calculated, SalesTotal for SalesPerson for example, you'll need to create a totals query that calculates the total for each SalesPerson and then join that query to the one used as the recordsource for the reports. That way the SalesTotal will be a field in the report's recordsource and then you can sort on it so the the SalesPeople are listed in order by their SalesTotals.
