A slight flaw in the design requires this change. What is the best way to do it?

Create a new field, name it and select AutoNumber from the drop down list for data type.

But what about records already entered? They won't populate will they?

EDIT: Oh, they do. I didn't realise.

Dear AccessBlaster,
I don't have an old table to start with, we have some records that need to continue the ID number from the past. How do I do. Also don't know how to create a append query. Please help!!!

but you do not want to try and use an autonumber like that. there is no guarantee of an intact sequence with an autonumber. if you need an intact sequence then you need a different approach.

Create a table with a field set to Autonumber.
Fill 999 records then... remove (delete) this records.
Now, your Autonumber will start from 1000.
:)

Fortunately... Gemma is right: this is NOT necessary in a good DB.
