Hello, I distribute an Access 2007 application to custmers using the Runtime version. I have been doing this for several year without encountering this type of problem. The customer has installed the application successfully on other Windows 7 PCs.
The customer installs the application on a new Window 7 PC. When they double click the desktop short-cut they receive a message asking if they wish to save the PTDocTools_FE.accdr file in Internet Explorer.

We have determined that the .accdr is associated with Internet Explorer on this PC!
When we try to change the program assocation there is no MSAccess.exe or AccessRuntime.exe in c:\Program Files\MicrosoftOffice.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Bill Echert

Have you tried to Open the file by right clicking and selecting Open With......?

Also, this may be helpful:

Additional Knowledge of accdr File Extension

How to Edit the accdr File Extension Information Manually? File extensions associations with applications and other information is stored in Windows Registry. File extensions information in Windows is stored in the key, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts.You are allowed to edit the registry entries in the registry editor in order to correct the invalid registry entries or create a new one manually under any Windows operating system. Please follow the instructions as below to edit the file extensions in the Windows registry:
  • 1. Click “Start” --- “Run”
  • 2. Type ‘regedit.exe’ and click OK. You will see a windows pops-up. That is the Windows registry editor. From here, you can modify and delete any registry entries of Windows system. All of the registry information is stored in this utility.
  • 3. In the Windows Registry editor, find out the key folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts.
  • 4. Search out the specific file extension registry key by using its name.
  • 5. Before you do anything with the Windows registry, please backup the registry folders at first because any mistaken will bring serious problems to your computer operating system. In some cases, the PC system even would crash. To avoid any accident, it is highly recommended you make a fully backup for the registry.
  • 6. Now edit the registry key and values of the file extension. You can also right-click on the editor screen and choose option to create a new name, value for the file extension.
  • 7. Close the Windows registry editor and then restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Alan, thanks for the information.

As a result of the application install, MS Access runtime should be on the PC. I expected to see MSAccess.exe in Program Files/Microsoft Office/ Office12. But the customer tells me nothing is there.
Is there some other location we should be looking?
Thanks,
Bill

We found the problem.

The software installed and worked correctly on two other PCs that had only MS Word and Excel.
The PC that had the problem (.accdr assocated with Internet Explorer) had MS Office 2010 with MS Access.
When MS Access was uninstalled the problem went away.
