Been using Virutalbox on Mac without major problems until two weeks ago. When I go into the design view of a form and click on something in the form which would be a ...

  • blank area
  • button
  • [Event Procedure]
Access crashes and restarts. This is preventing me from connecting a button to the vba code, moving buttons around or doing other editing.

I have tried compact and repair, opening with the decompile switch. Lastly I created a new blank database and created a blank form (I did not add any tables or other objects) and added a button to the form. After I chose the On Click Event and clicked on the triple dots, it crashed. Therefore I can conclude that the problem is not with my original database. I am able to other things in the database such as using the form in normal view and clicking buttons, run queries and reports, only seems to crash when in design view of a form. Two days ago I bought more RAM thinking lack of RAM maybe that was a factor, but the additional RAM didn't help. I've also run the Office Diagnostics on several occasions and it did not find any problems.

As I am working on this project remotely my options are somewhat limited in that I don't have the office2007 installation discs.

Try if you can edit the form's event in the attached database without crashing.

I opened your file fine. No crash. A friend suggested I contact the Microsoft Store. They said I should bring in computer (since it's not a laptop, wasn't ready to do that), but in the meantime, said I could try an Office Repair which is different than Office Diagnostics. I followed their instruction and now instead of crashing every time for form in design view, it is happening randomly and less often. I'll see if I can live with that for now, otherwise, I'll drag my computer to their store and see if they have any other suggestions, although if the problem now is random, diagnosing may be more tricky. Do you think Java could be causing a problem, reason I ask is that lately, after windows is up or restarted, the screen goes dim and a message pops up about installing an update to Java, one time I clicked on yes, but since then, it still pops up, so I've been clicking on Cancel.

No relation to Java. It's possible that the VM is starving Access or Office (as a whole) of resources causing it to crash or the instal is unstable or the VM itself is unstable.

You'll probably get better responses if you post to the Virtual Box forum (if there's one) or an appropriate VM forum.

I was testing out the Mac Book Pro for two weeks last month. I was using Parallels for Virtual Machine. Parallels worked amazingly fast and Access performed great in Parallels. I gave the VM 2GB RAM and 2CPU cores. Make sure you don't assign too much RAM to the VM... it's not necessary and will actually slow things down.

You can try Parallels free for a two week trial.
