Access 2007 Multivalue field how to count data

In my Access 2007 data base i have a field that pertains to number of days that were avoidable. I also have a field that have causes for the avoidable days. These fiels are multi value fields. I am trying to count the numer of times a certain field was documented as a cause, but not the number of different causes in the field. When I try to do count it always counts the number of values in the field instead of the number of times the field was document on. Any suggestion? I know the multivalue field is new.
